1 I n the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that same day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.

فِي نِهَايَةِ الشَّهرِ الثّالِثِ بَعدَ خُرُوجِ بَنِي إسْرائِيلَ مِنْ مِصرَ، وَصَلُوا إلَى صَحْراءِ سِيناءَ.

2 W hen they had departed from Rephidim, and had come to the wilderness of Sinai, they encamped in the wilderness; and there Israel encamped before the mountain.

فَقَدِ ارتَحَلُوا مِنْ رَفِيدِيمَ، وَأتَوْا إلَى صَحْراءِ سِيناءَ، وَخَيَّمُوا هُناكَ. وَبَينَما كانَ بَنُو إسْرائِيلَ مُخَيِّمِينَ مُقابِلَ الجَبَلِ،

3 M oses went up to God, and Yahweh called to him out of the mountain, saying, “This is what you shall tell the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:

صَعِدَ مُوسَى إلَى الجَبَلِ، فَدَعاهُ اللهُ مِنَ الجَبَلِ وَقالَ: «هَذا ما تَقُولُهُ لِبَيتِ يَعقُوبَ، وَتُخْبِرُ بِهِ بَني إسْرائِيلَ:

4 ‘ You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to myself.

‹قَدْ رَأيتُمْ ما عَمِلْتُهُ بِالمَصْرِيينَ. أمَّا أنْتُمْ فَحَمَلْتُكُمْ عَلَى أجنِحَةِ النُّسُورِ وَأحضَرْتُكُمْ إلَيَّ.

5 N ow therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice, and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own possession from among all peoples; for all the earth is mine;

وَالآنَ، إنْ أطَعتُمُونِي وَحَفِظتُمْ عَهدِي، سَتُصبِحُونَ كَنزاً لِي مِنْ بَينِ كُلِّ الشُّعُوبِ، لِأنَّ الأرْضَ كُلَّها لِي.

6 a nd you shall be to me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”

سَتَصِيرُونَ لِي مَملَكَةَ كَهَنَةٍ، وَأُمَّةً مُقَدَّسَةً.› هَذا ما تَقُولَهُ لِبَنِي إسْرائِيلَ.»

7 M oses came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which Yahweh commanded him.

فَاسْتَدعَى مُوسَى شُيُوخَ الشَّعبِ، وَأخبَرَهُمْ بِكُلِّ الكَلامِ الَّذِي أمَرَهُ اللهُ بِهِ.

8 A ll the people answered together, and said, “All that Yahweh has spoken we will do.” Moses reported the words of the people to Yahweh.

فَأجابَ الشَّعبُ مَعاً وَقالُوا: «سَنَفعَلُ كُلَّ ما قالَهُ اللهُ.» وَبَلَّغَ مُوسَى اللهَ بِجَوابِ الشَّعبِ.

9 Y ahweh said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever.” Moses told the words of the people to Yahweh.

فَقالَ اللهُ لِمُوسَى: «سَآتِي إلَيكَ فِي سَحابَةٍ كَثِيفَةٍ لِيَسمَعَ الشَّعبُ حِينَ أتَكَلَّمُ مَعَكَ فَيَثِقُوا بِكَ دَائِماً.» وَأخبَرَ مُوسَى اللهَ بِكَلامِ الشَّعبِ.

10 Y ahweh said to Moses, “Go to the people, and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments,

وَقالَ اللهُ لِمُوسَى: «اذْهَبْ إلَى الشَّعبِ وَقَدِّسْهُمُ اليَومَ وَغَداً، وَمُرْهُمْ بِغَسلِ ثِيابِهِمْ.

11 a nd be ready against the third day; for on the third day Yahweh will come down in the sight of all the people on Mount Sinai.

فَليَكُونُوا مُستَعِدِّينَ فِي اليَومِ الثّالِثِ، لِأنَّ اللهَ سَيَنْزِلُ فِي اليَومِ الثّالِثِ أمامَ كُلِّ الشَّعبِ عَلَى جَبَلِ سِيناءَ.

12 Y ou shall set bounds to the people all around, saying, ‘Be careful that you don’t go up onto the mountain, or touch its border. Whoever touches the mountain shall be surely put to death.

«لَكِنْ ضَعْ حُدُوداً لِلشَّعبِ حَولَ الجَبَلِ، وَقُلْ لَهُمْ: ‹احذَرُوا الاقْتِرابَ مِنَ الجَبَلِ أوْ لَمْسِهِ. فَكُلُّ مَنْ يَلمِسُهُ يُقتَلُ.

13 N o hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot through; whether it is animal or man, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come up to the mountain.”

فَمَنْ يَتَعَدَّى الحُدُودَ، لا يَنبغِي أنْ يَلْمِسَهُ أحَدٌ بِيَدِهِ، بَلْ يُرجَمَ أوْ يُرمى بِسَهْمٍ. سَواءٌ أكانَ إنساناً أمْ حَيواناً، لا يَعِيشَ!› لَكِنْ حِينَ يُضرَبُ بِالبُوقِ نَغَمَةً طَوِيلَةً، يُمكِنُهُمُ الصُّعُودُ إلَى الجَبَلِ.»

14 M oses went down from the mountain to the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.

فَنَزَلَ مُوسَى مِنَ الجَبَلِ إلَى الشَّعبِ، وَقَدَّسَ الشَّعبَ، وَغَسَلَ الشَّعبُ ثِيابَهُمْ.

15 H e said to the people, “Be ready by the third day. Don’t have sexual relations with a woman.”

وَقالَ مُوسَى لِلشَّعبِ: «كُونُوا مُستَعِدِّينَ لِأجلِ اليَومِ الثّالِثِ، وَلا تُعَاشِرُوا نِسَاءَكُمْ حَتَّى ذَلِكَ الحِينِ.»

16 O n the third day, when it was morning, there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain, and the sound of an exceedingly loud trumpet; and all the people who were in the camp trembled.

وَفِي صَباحِ اليَومِ الثّالِثِ، كانَ هُناكَ رَعدٌ وَبَرقٌ وَسَحابٌ كَثِيفٌ عَلَى الجَبَلِ، وَصَوتُ بُوقٍ مُرتَفِعٌ. فارتَعَدَ كُلُّ الشَّعبِ الَّذِي كانَ فِي المُخَيَّمِ.

17 M oses led the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the lower part of the mountain.

وَأخرَجَ مُوسَى الشَّعبَ مِنَ المُخَيَّمِ لِلِقاءِ اللهِ، فَوَقَفُوا فِي أسفَلِ الجَبَلِ.

18 A ll of Mount Sinai smoked, because Yahweh descended on it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.

وَكانَ جَبَلُ سِيناءَ كُلُّهُ مُغَطَّىً بِالدُّخانِ، لِأنَّ اللهَ نَزَلَ عَلَيهِ فِي نارٍ. وَصَعِدَ الدُّخانُ مِنَ الجَبَلِ كَدُخانِ الفُرنِ. وَكانَ كُلُّ الجَبَلِ يَهتَزُّ بِقُوَّةٍ.

19 W hen the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice.

وَاستَمَرَّ صَوتُ البُوقِ بِالارتِفاعِ، بَينَما كانَ مُوسَى يَتَكَلَّمُ وَاللهُ يُجِيبُهُ بِصَوتٍ كَصَوتِ الرَّعدِ.

20 Y ahweh came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. Yahweh called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

وَنَزَلَ اللهُ عَلَى قِمَّةِ جَبَلِ سِيناءَ، وَدَعا مُوسَى إلَى الصُّعُودِ إلَى قِمَّةِ الجَبَلِ. فَصَعِدَ مُوسَى.

21 Y ahweh said to Moses, “Go down, warn the people, lest they break through to Yahweh to gaze, and many of them perish.

وَقالَ اللهُ لِمُوسَى: «انزِلْ وَحَذِّرِ الشَّعبَ لِئَلّا يَقتَحِمُوا مَحْضَرَ اللهِ لِيَنظُرُوا، فَيَسقُطَ كَثِيرُونَ مَوتَى.

22 L et the priests also, who come near to Yahweh, sanctify themselves, lest Yahweh break out on them.”

حَتَّى الكَهَنَةُ الَّذِينَ يَقتَرِبُونَ إلَى اللهِ ، فَلْيُقَدِّسُوا أنفُسَهُمْ لِلِقائِي لِئَلّا أقضِيَ عَلَيهِمْ.»

23 M oses said to Yahweh, “The people can’t come up to Mount Sinai, for you warned us, saying, ‘Set bounds around the mountain, and sanctify it.’”

وَقالَ مُوسَى للهِ: «لا يَستَطِيعُ الشَّعبُ أنْ يَصْعَدَ إلَى جَبَلِ سِيناءَ، لِأنَّكَ حَذَّرْتَهُمْ بِنَفسِكَ فَقُلتَ: ‹ضَعْ حُدُوداً حَولَ الجَبَلِ وَقَدِّسْهُ.›»

24 Y ahweh said to him, “Go down! You shall bring Aaron up with you, but don’t let the priests and the people break through to come up to Yahweh, lest he break out against them.”

وَقالَ اللهُ لِمُوسَى: «انزِلْ ثُمَّ اصعَدْ وَهارُونُ مَعَكَ. لَكِنْ لا تَسْمَحْ لِلكَهَنَةِ أوِ الشَّعبَ بِالصُّعُودِ لاقْتِحامِ مَحْضَرِ اللهِ ، لِئَلّا يَقتَحِمَهُمُ اللهُ.»

25 S o Moses went down to the people, and told them.

فَنَزَلَ مُوسَى إلَى الشَّعبِ وَقالَ لَهُمْ ذَلِكَ.
