1 N ow faith is substantiating of things hoped for, conviction of things not seen.
وَالإيمانُ هُوَ التَّيَقُّنُ مِمّا نَرجُو، أيِ الْبُرهانُ لَنا عَلَى وُجُودِ ما لا يُرَى.
2 F or in this the elders have obtained testimony.
وَبِسَبَبِ هَذا الإيمانِ، أظهَرَ اللهُ رِضاهُ عَلَى القُدَماءِ.
3 B y faith we apprehend that the worlds were framed by word of God, so that that which is seen should not take its origin from things which appear.
بِالإيمانِ نَفهَمُ أنَّ الكَونُ خُلِقَ بِأمرِ اللهِ، حَتَّى إنَّ ما يُرَى كُوِّنَ مِمّا لا يُرَى.
4 B y faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained testimony of being righteous, God bearing testimony to his gifts, and by it, having died, he yet speaks.
بِالإيمانِ قَدَّمَ هابِيلُ ذَبِيحَةً للهِ أفضَلَ مِمّا قَدَّمَ قايِيْنُ. وَهَكَذا صادَقَ اللهُ عَلَى أنَّهُ بارٌّ، إذْ قَبِلَ تَقدِماتِهِ. وَبِإيمانِهِ مازالَ يَتَكَلَّمُ مَعَ أنَّهُ مَيِّتٌ.
5 B y faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him; for before translation he has the testimony that he had pleased God.
بِالإيمانِ رُفِعَ أخنُوخُ إلَى اللهِ حَيّاً، فَلَمْ يَذُقِ المَوتَ. وَما كانَ مُمكِناً أنْ يَجِدَهُ أحَدٌ عَلَى الأرْضِ لِأنَّ اللهَ رَفَعَهُ إلَيهِ. فَقَبلَ أنْ يُرفَعَ، امتُدِحَ لأنَّهُ أرْضَى اللهَ.
6 B ut without faith impossible to please. For he that draws near to God must believe that he is, and he is a rewarder of them who seek him out.
وَبِغَيْرِ إيمانٍ، لا يَمكِنُ إرضاءُ اللهِ. فَعَلَى مَنْ يَأتِي إلَى اللهِ أنْ يُؤمِنَ بِأنَّهُ مَوجُودٌ، وَبِأنَّهُ يُكافِئُ الَّذِينَ يَطلُبُونَهُ.
7 B y faith, Noah, oracularly warned concerning things not yet seen, moved with fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his house; by which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which according to faith.
بِالإيمانِ بَنَى نُوحُ سَفِينَةً لِيُخَلِّصَ نَفسَهُ وَعائِلَتَهُ، إذْ حَذَّرَهُ اللهُ مِنْ أُمُورٍ لَمْ تَحْدُثْ بَعْدُ، فامتَلأ رَهبَةً. وَبِإيمانِهِ هَذا أدانَ العالَمَ، وَصارَ وَرِيثاً لِلبِرِّ الَّذِي يَأْتِي بِالإيمانِ.
8 B y faith Abraham, being called, obeyed to go out into the place which he was to receive for an inheritance, and went out, not knowing where he was going.
بِالإيمانِ أطاعَ إبراهِيمُ اللهَ لَمّا دَعاهُ، وَخَرَجَ إلَى مَكانٍ سَيَصِيْرُ مِيراثاً لَهُ. خَرَجَ حَتَّى دُونَ أنْ يَعرِفَ إلَى أينَ.
9 B y faith he sojourned as a stranger in the land of promise as a foreign country, having dwelt in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with of the same promise;
بِالإيمانِ عاشَ إبراهِيمُ فِي الأرْضِ المَوعُودَةِ كَغَرِيبٍ فِي أرْضٍ غَرِيبَةٍ. سَكَنَ الخِيامَ كَما فَعَلَ إسْحاقُ وَيَعقُوبُ اللَّذانِ كانا وَرِيثَينِ لِنَفسِ الوَعدِ مَعَهُ.
10 f or he waited for the city which has foundations, of which God is artificer and constructor.
فَعَلَ هَذا لِأنَّهُ كانَ يَتَطَلَّعُ إلَى المَدِينَةِ ذاتِ الأساساتِ الأبَدِيَّةِ، المَدِينَةِ الَّتِي مُهَندِسُها وَبانِيها هُوَ اللهُ.
11 B y faith also Sarah herself received strength for conception of seed, and beyond a seasonable age; since she counted him faithful who promised.
بِالإيمانِ نالَ إبراهِيمُ قُدرَةً عَلَى أنْ يُنجِبَ ابناً مَعَ أنَّ سارَة كانَتْ عاقِراً. وَمَعَ أنَّهُ تَعَدَّى سِنَّ الإنجابِ، إلّا أنَّهُ عَلِمَ أنَّ اللهَ الَّذِي وَعَدَهُ أمِينٌ.
12 W herefore also there have been born of one, and that of one become dead, even as the stars of heaven in multitude, and as the countless sand which by the sea shore.
وَمِنْ هَذا الرَّجُلِ الواحِدِ الَّذِي كانَ فِي حُكمِ الأمواتِ، جاءَ نَسلٌ كَثِيْرٌ بِعَدَدِ نُجُومِ السَّماءِ، وَبِعَدَدِ حَبّاتِ الرَّملِ عَلَى شاطِئِ البَحرِ.
13 A ll these died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them from afar off and embraced, and confessed that they were strangers and sojourners on the earth.
ماتَ هَؤُلاءِ كُلُّهُمْ وَهُمْ مُؤمِنُونَ. ماتُوا دُونَ أنْ يَنالوا الوُعُودَ، لَكِنَّهُمْ حَيُّوها بِفَرَحٍ مِنْ بَعِيدٍ مُقِرِّيْنَ بِأنَّهُمْ غُرَباءُ عابِرُونَ هَذِهِ الأرْضَ.
14 F or they who say such things shew clearly that they seek country.
وَمَنْ يَقُولُونَ مِثلَ هَذا، يُظهِرُونَ أنَّهُمْ يَبحَثُونَ عَنْ وَطَنٍ.
15 A nd if they had called to mind that from whence they went out, they had had opportunity to have returned;
فَلَو كانُوا يُفَكِّرُونَ بِالوَطَنِ الَّذِي تَرَكُوهُ، لَكانَتْ لَهُمْ فُرصَةُ العَودَةِ إلَيهِ.
16 b ut now they seek a better, that is, a heavenly; wherefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God; for he has prepared for them a city.
لَكِنَّهُمْ كانُوا يَحِنُّونَ إلَى وَطَنٍ أفضَلَ، وَطَنٍ سَماوِيٍّ. وَلِهَذا فَإنَّ اللهَ لا يَستَحِي بِأنْ يُدعَى إلَهَهُمْ، فَقَدْ أعَدَّ لَهُمْ مَدِينَةً.
17 B y faith Abraham, tried, offered up Isaac, and he who had received to himself the promises offered up his only begotten,
بِالإيمانِ قَدَّمَ إبراهِيمُ ابنَهُ إسْحاقَ ذَبِيحَةً عِندَما امتَحَنَهُ اللهُ. نَعَمْ، فَالَّذِي تَلَقَّىْ وُعُودَ اللهِ، كانَ مُستَعِدّاً أنْ يُقَدِّمَ ابنَهُ الوَحِيدَ.
18 a s to whom it had been said, In Isaac shall thy seed be called:
إذْ قالَ لَهُ اللهُ: «سَيَكُونُ لَكَ نَسلٌ بِواسِطَةِ إسْحاقَ.»
19 c ounting that God able to raise even from among dead, whence also he received him in a figure.
فَآمَنَ إبراهِيْمُ بِاللهِ القادِرِ عَلَى إقامَةِ الأمْواتِ. وَيُمكِنُ القَولُ رَمزِيّاً إنَّ إبراهِيْمَ استَرَدَّ إسْحاقَ مِنَ المَوتِ.
20 B y faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
بِالإيمانِ بارَكَ إسْحاقُ وَلَديهِ يَعقُوبَ وَعِيسُو بَرَكاتٍ تَتَعَلَّقُ بِالمُستَقْبَلِ.
21 B y faith Jacob dying blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshipped on the top of his staff.
بِالإيمانِ بارَكَ يَعقُوبُ وَلَدَي يُوسُفَ كِلَيْهِما وَهُوَ يُحتَضَرُ، وَسَجَدَ للهِ مُتَّكِئاً عَلَى عَصاهُ.
22 B y faith Joseph dying called to mind the going forth of the sons of Israel, and gave commandment concerning his bones.
بِالإيمانِ تَحَدَّثَ يُوسُفُ فِي نِهايَةِ حَياتِهِ عَنْ خُرُوجِ بَنيْ إسرائِيلَ مِنْ مِصرَ، وَأوصاهُمْ بِما يُريدُ مِنْهُمْ أنْ يَفعَلوا بِعِظامِهِ.
23 B y faith Moses, being born, was hid three months by his parents, because they saw the child beautiful; and they did not fear the injunction of the king.
بِالإيمانِ، وَالِدا مُوسَىْ أخْفَياهُ ثَلاثَةَ أشهُرٍ بَعْدَ وِلادَتِهِ. لَقَدْ رَأيا أنَّهُ طِفلٌ جَمِيلٌ، وَلَمْ يَخشَيا أوامِرَ المَلِكِ.
24 B y faith Moses, when he had become great, refused to be called son of Pharaoh's daughter;
بِالإيمانِ لَمّا كَبِرَ مُوسَى رَفَضَ أنْ يُدعَى ابناً لابنَةِ فِرعَوْنَ.
25 c hoosing rather to suffer affliction along with the people of God than to have temporary pleasure of sin;
وَاختارَ سُوءَ المُعامَلَةِ مَعَ شَعبِ اللهِ عَلَى التَّمَتُّعِ بِمَلَذّاتِ الخَطِيَّةِ المُؤَقَّتَةِ.
26 e steeming the reproach of the Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt, for he had respect to the recompense.
وَاعتَبَرَ احتِمالَ الخِزيِ مِنْ أجلِ المَسِيحِ أثمَنَ مِنْ كُنُوزِ مِصْرَ كُلِّها، لِأنَّهُ كانَ يَتَطَلَّعُ إلَى مُكافَأتِهِ.
27 B y faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he persevered, as seeing him who is invisible.
بِالإيمانِ تَرَكَ مُوسَىْ مِصرَ غَيرَ عابِئٍ بِغَضَبِ المَلِكِ. وَكانَ ثابِتَ العَزمِ كَأنَّهُ يَرَى اللهَ الَّذِي لا يُرَى.
28 B y faith he celebrated the passover and the sprinkling of the blood, that the destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.
بِالإيمانِ احتَفَلَ بِالفِصحِ، وَرَشَّ الدَّمَ لِكَيلا يَمَسَّ المَلاكُ المُهلِكُ أيَّ بِكرٍ مِنْ بَني إسرائِيلَ.
29 B y faith they passed through the Red sea as through dry land; of which the Egyptians having made trial were swallowed up.
بِالإيمانِ عَبَرَ بَنو إسرائيلَ البَحرَ الأحمَرَ كَأنَّهُمْ يَمشُونَ عَلَى أرْضٍ يابِسَةٍ، لَكِنْ حِينَ حاوَلَ المِصرِيُّونَ أنْ يَفعَلُوا ذَلِكَ، غَرِقُوا.
30 B y faith the walls of Jericho fell, having been encircled for seven days.
بِالإيمانِ سَقَطَتْ أسوارُ أرِيحا، بَعدَ أنْ دارَ الشَّعبُ حَولَها سَبعَةَ أيّامٍ.
31 B y faith Rahab the harlot did not perish along with the unbelieving, having received the spies in peace.
بِالإيمانِ لَمْ تُقتَلْ راحابُ السّاقِطَةُ مَعَ الَّذِينَ عَصَوا، لِأنَّها رَحَّبَتْ بِالجاسُوسَينِ.
32 A nd what more do I say? For the time would fail me telling of Gideon, and Barak, and Samson, and Jephthah, and David and Samuel, and of the prophets:
وَماذا أقُولُ أيضاً؟ إذْ لا وَقتَ لِلحَدِيثِ عَنْ جَدعُونَ وَباراقَ وَشَمشُونَ وَيَفتاحَ وَداوُدَ وَصَمُوئِيلَ وَالأنبِياءِ.
33 w ho by faith overcame kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped lions' mouths,
بِالإيمانِ فَتَحَ هَؤُلاءِ مَمالِكَ، وَرَسَّخُوا العَدلَ، وَنالُوا وُعُوداً مِنَ اللهِ. سَدُّوا أفواهَ أُسُودٍ.
34 q uenched power of fire, escaped edge of the sword, became strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, made armies of strangers give way.
أطفَأُوا قُوَّةَ النّارِ، وَنَجُوا مِنَ المَوتِ بِالسَّيفِ. اكتَسَبُوا قُوَّةً وَهُمْ ضُعَفاءُ. صارُوا أشِدّاءَ فِي المَعارِكِ، وَهَزَمُوا جُيُوشاً غَرِيبَةً.
35 W omen received their dead again by resurrection; and others were tortured, not having accepted deliverance, that they might get a better resurrection;
استَرَدَّتْ نِساءٌ أشْخاصاً ماتوا ثُمَّ قاموا مِنَ الموتِ. تَعَرَّضَ آخَرُونَ لِلتَّعذِيبِ، وَرَفَضُوا أنْ يُطلَقَ سَراحَهُمْ، لِكَي يَنالوا قِيامَةً أفضَلَ.
36 a nd others underwent trial of mockings and scourgings, yea, and of bonds and imprisonment.
وَاجَهَ بَعضُهِمُ الاستِهزاءَ وَالجَلْدَ، وَواجَهَ آخَرُونَ السَّلاسِلَ وَالسُّجُونَ.
37 T hey were stoned, were sawn asunder, were tempted, died by the death of the sword; they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, destitute, afflicted, evil treated,
رُجِمَ بَعضُهُمْ، وَنُشِرَ بَعضُهُمْ. قُتِلَ بَعضُهُمْ بِالسَّيفِ، وَتَجَوَّلَ بَعضُهُمْ فِي جُلُودِ غَنَمٍ وَماعِزٍ. افتَقَرُوا وَاضطُهِدُوا وَأُسِيئَتْ مُعامَلَتُهُمْ.
38 ( of whom the world was not worthy,) wandering in deserts and mountains, and dens and caverns of the earth.
لَمْ يَكُنِ العالَمُ جَدِيراً بِهِمْ. هامُوا فِي الصَّحارَى وَالجِبالِ، وَعاشُوا فِي كُهُوفٍ وَمَغايِرَ فِي الأرْضِ.
39 A nd these all, having obtained witness through faith, did not receive the promise,
امتَدَحَ اللهُ هَؤُلاءِ جَمِيعاً عَلَى إيمانِهِمْ، لَكِنَّهُمْ لَمْ يَنالُوا الوَعْدَ العَظيمَ.
40 G od having foreseen some better thing for us, that they should not be made perfect without us.
فَقَدْ أعَدَّ اللهُ لَنا شَيئاً أفضَلَ مِمّا نالُوا هُمْ، وَأرادَ أنْ يُحَقِّقَ الكَمالَ لَنا وَلَهُمْ مَعاً.
