1 D epois disso abriu Jó a sua boca, e amaldiçoou o seu dia.

After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.

2 E Jó falou, dizendo:

And Job spake, and said,

3 P ereça o dia em que nasci, e a noite que se disse: Foi concebido um homem!

Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.

4 C onverta-se aquele dia em trevas; e Deus, lá de cima, não tenha cuidado dele, nem resplandeça sobre ele a luz.

Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.

5 R eclamem-no para si as trevas e a sombra da morte; habitem sobre ele nuvens; espante-o tudo o que escurece o dia.

Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

6 Q uanto

As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

7 A h! que estéril seja aquela noite, e nela não entre voz de regozijo.

Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.

8 A maldiçoem-na aqueles que amaldiçoam os dias, que são peritos em suscitar o leviatã.

Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.

9 A s estrelas da alva se lhe escureçam; espere ela em vão a luz, e não veja as pálpebras da manhã;

Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:

10 p orquanto não fechou as portas do ventre de minha mãe, nem escondeu dos meus olhos a aflição.

because it shut not up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes.

11 P or que não morri ao nascer? por que não expirei ao vir ã luz?

Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

12 P or que me receberam os joelhos? e por que os seios, para que eu mamasse?

Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?

13 P ois agora eu estaria deitado e quieto; teria dormido e estaria em repouso,

For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,

14 c om os reis e conselheiros da terra, que reedificavam ruínas para si,

with kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves;

15 o u com os príncipes que tinham ouro, que enchiam as suas casas de prata;

or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:

16 o u, como aborto oculto, eu não teria existido, como as crianças que nunca viram a luz.

or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.

17 A li os ímpios cessam de perturbar; e ali repousam os cansados.

There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.

18 A li os presos descansam juntos, e não ouvem a voz do exator.

There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.

19 O pequeno e o grande ali estão e o servo está livre de seu senhor.

The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

20 P or que se concede luz ao aflito, e vida aos amargurados de alma;

Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;

21 q ue anelam pela morte sem que ela venha, e cavam em procura dela mais do que de tesouros escondidos;

which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;

22 q ue muito se regozijam e exultam, quando acham a sepultura?

which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

23 S im, por que se concede luz ao homem cujo caminho está escondido, e a quem Deus cercou de todos os lados?

Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

24 P ois em lugar de meu pão vem o meu suspiro, e os meus gemidos se derramam como água.

For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.

25 P orque aquilo que temo me sobrevém, e o que receio me acontece.

For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.

26 N ão tenho repouso, nem sossego, nem descanso; mas vem a perturbação.

I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.
