1 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called,

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,

2 w ith all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love;

with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,

3 b eing eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4 T here is one body, and one Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your calling;

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;

5 o ne Lord, one faith, one baptism,

one Lord, one faith, one baptism;

6 o ne God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.

one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. Spiritual Gifts

7 B ut to each one of us was the grace given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

8 T herefore he says, “When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.”

Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.”

9 N ow this, “He ascended”, what is it but that he also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?

(Now this, “He ascended” —what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?

10 H e who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.

He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)

11 H e gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers;

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,

12 f or the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ;

for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

13 u ntil we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

14 t hat we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error;

that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,

15 b ut speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ;

but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—

16 f rom whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. The New Man

17 T his I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind,

This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind,

18 b eing darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts;

having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;

19 w ho having become callous gave themselves up to lust, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

20 B ut you did not learn Christ that way;

But you have not so learned Christ,

21 i f indeed you heard him, and were taught in him, even as truth is in Jesus:

if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus:

22 t hat you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man, that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit;

that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts,

23 a nd that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

24 a nd put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.

and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Do Not Grieve the Spirit

25 T herefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor. For we are members of one another.

Therefore, putting away lying, “ Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.

26 Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath,

“Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

27 a nd don’t give place to the devil.

nor give place to the devil.

28 L et him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, producing with his hands something that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need.

Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.

29 L et no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

30 D on’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31 L et all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice.

Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.

32 A nd be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
