1 Y ahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

2 Make two trumpets of silver. You shall make them of beaten work. You shall use them for the calling of the congregation, and for the journeying of the camps.

“Make two silver trumpets for yourself; you shall make them of hammered work; you shall use them for calling the congregation and for directing the movement of the camps.

3 W hen they blow them, all the congregation shall gather themselves to you at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

When they blow both of them, all the congregation shall gather before you at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.

4 I f they blow just one, then the princes, the heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves to you.

But if they blow only one, then the leaders, the heads of the divisions of Israel, shall gather to you.

5 W hen you blow an alarm, the camps that lie on the east side shall go forward.

When you sound the advance, the camps that lie on the east side shall then begin their journey.

6 W hen you blow an alarm the second time, the camps that lie on the south side shall go forward. They shall blow an alarm for their journeys.

When you sound the advance the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall begin their journey; they shall sound the call for them to begin their journeys.

7 B ut when the assembly is to be gathered together, you shall blow, but you shall not sound an alarm.

And when the assembly is to be gathered together, you shall blow, but not sound the advance.

8 The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets. This shall be to you for a statute forever throughout your generations.

The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and these shall be to you as an ordinance forever throughout your generations.

9 W hen you go to war in your land against the adversary who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets. Then you will be remembered before Yahweh your God, and you will be saved from your enemies.

“When you go to war in your land against the enemy who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you will be remembered before the Lord your God, and you will be saved from your enemies.

10 Also in the day of your gladness, and in your set feasts, and in the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be to you for a memorial before your God. I am Yahweh your God.”

11 I n the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day of the month, the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle of the testimony.

Now it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle of the Testimony.

12 T he children of Israel went forward according to their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud stayed in the wilderness of Paran.

And the children of Israel set out from the Wilderness of Sinai on their journeys; then the cloud settled down in the Wilderness of Paran.

13 T hey first went forward according to the commandment of Yahweh by Moses.

So they started out for the first time according to the command of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

14 F irst, the standard of the camp of the children of Judah went forward according to their armies. Nahshon the son of Amminadab was over his army.

The standard of the camp of the children of Judah set out first according to their armies; over their army was Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

15 N ethanel the son of Zuar was over the army of the tribe of the children of Issachar.

Over the army of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethanel the son of Zuar.

16 E liab the son of Helon was over the army of the tribe of the children of Zebulun.

And over the army of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab the son of Helon.

17 T he tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who bore the tabernacle, went forward.

Then the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set out, carrying the tabernacle.

18 T he standard of the camp of Reuben went forward according to their armies. Elizur the son of Shedeur was over his army.

And the standard of the camp of Reuben set out according to their armies; over their army was Elizur the son of Shedeur.

19 S helumiel the son of Zurishaddai was over the army of the tribe of the children of Simeon.

Over the army of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

20 E liasaph the son of Deuel was over the army of the tribe of the children of Gad.

And over the army of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel.

21 T he Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary. The others set up the tabernacle before they arrived.

Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy things. (The tabernacle would be prepared for their arrival.)

22 T he standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies. Elishama the son of Ammihud was over his army.

And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set out according to their armies; over their army was Elishama the son of Ammihud.

23 G amaliel the son of Pedahzur was over the army of the tribe of the children of Manasseh.

Over the army of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

24 A bidan the son of Gideoni was over the army of the tribe of the children of Benjamin.

And over the army of the tribe of the children of Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni.

25 T he standard of the camp of the children of Dan, which was the rear guard of all the camps, set forward according to their armies. Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai was over his army.

Then the standard of the camp of the children of Dan (the rear guard of all the camps) set out according to their armies; over their army was Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.

26 P agiel the son of Ochran was over the army of the tribe of the children of Asher.

Over the army of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel the son of Ocran.

27 A hira the son of Enan was over the army of the tribe of the children of Naphtali.

And over the army of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan.

28 T hus were the travels of the children of Israel according to their armies; and they went forward.

Thus was the order of march of the children of Israel, according to their armies, when they began their journey.

29 M oses said to Hobab, the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are journeying to the place of which Yahweh said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will treat you well; for Yahweh has spoken good concerning Israel.”

Now Moses said to Hobab the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out for the place of which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will treat you well; for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”

30 H e said to him, “I will not go; but I will depart to my own land, and to my relatives.”

And he said to him, “I will not go, but I will depart to my own land and to my relatives.”

31 H e said, “Don’t leave us, please; because you know how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes.

So Moses said, “Please do not leave, inasmuch as you know how we are to camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes.

32 I t shall be, if you go with us, yes, it shall be, that whatever good Yahweh does to us, we will do the same to you.”

And it shall be, if you go with us—indeed it shall be—that whatever good the Lord will do to us, the same we will do to you.”

33 T hey set forward from the Mount of Yahweh three days’ journey. The ark of Yahweh’s covenant went before them three days’ journey, to seek out a resting place for them.

So they departed from the mountain of the Lord on a journey of three days; and the ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them for the three days’ journey, to search out a resting place for them.

34 T he cloud of Yahweh was over them by day, when they set forward from the camp.

And the cloud of the Lord was above them by day when they went out from the camp.

35 W hen the ark went forward, Moses said, “Rise up, Yahweh, and let your enemies be scattered! Let those who hate you flee before you!”

So it was, whenever the ark set out, that Moses said: “Rise up, O Lord! Let Your enemies be scattered, And let those who hate You flee before You.”

36 W hen it rested, he said, “Return, Yahweh, to the ten thousands of the thousands of Israel.”

And when it rested, he said: “Return, O Lord, To the many thousands of Israel.”
