In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,

7 t hat the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ—

that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,

8 w hom not having known you love; in whom, though now you don’t see him, yet believing, you rejoice greatly with joy unspeakable and full of glory—

whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,

10 C oncerning this salvation, the prophets sought and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you,

Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you,

11 s earching for who or what kind of time the Spirit of Christ, which was in them, pointed to, when he predicted the sufferings of Christ, and the glories that would follow them.

searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into. Living Before God Our Father

13 T herefore prepare your minds for action, be sober, and set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ—

Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

14 a s children of obedience, not conforming yourselves according to your former lusts as in your ignorance,

as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance;

15 b ut just as he who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior;

but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,

16 b ecause it is written, “You shall be holy; for I am holy.”

because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

17 I f you call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judges according to each man’s work, pass the time of your living as foreigners here in reverent fear:

And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear;

18 k nowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers,

knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,

19 b ut with precious blood, as of a faultless and pure lamb, the blood of Christ;

but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

20 w ho was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of times for your sake,

He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you

21 w ho through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead, and gave him glory; so that your faith and hope might be in God.

who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. The Enduring Word

22 S eeing you have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth through the Spirit in sincere brotherly affection, love one another from the heart fervently:

Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,

23 h aving been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which lives and remains forever.

having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,

24 F or, “All flesh is like grass, and all of man’s glory like the flower in the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls;

because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away,

25 b ut the Lord’s word endures forever.” This is the word of Good News which was preached to you.

But the word of the Lord endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.
