1 ¶ Moreover, brothers, I would that ye not ignore how our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea

Vả, hỡi anh em, tôi chẳng muốn cho anh em không biết tổ phụ chúng ta đều đã ở dưới đám mây, đi ngang qua biển,

2 a nd were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea

chịu Môi-se làm phép báp tem trong đám mây và dưới biển,

3 a nd did all eat the same spiritual food

ăn một thứ ăn thiêng liêng;

4 a nd did all drink the same spiritual drink, for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them; and that Rock was the Christ.

và uống một thứ uống thiêng liêng; vì họ uống nơi một hòn đá thiêng liêng theo mình và đá ấy tức là Đấng Christ.

5 B ut with many of them God was not pleased; therefore, they were overthrown in the wilderness.

Song phần nhiều trong vòng họ không đẹp lòng Đức Chúa Trời, nên đã ngã chết nơi đồng vắng.

6 ¶ Now these things became types of us, that we should not lust after evil things as they lusted.

Mọi điều đó đã xảy ra để làm gương cho chúng ta, hầu cho chúng ta chớ buông mình theo tình dục xấu, như chính tổ phụ chúng ta đã buông mình.

7 N either be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.

Cũng đừng thờ hình tượng nữa, như mấy người trong họ, theo lời chép rằng: Dân sự ngồi mà ăn uống, rồi đứng dậy mà chơi dỡn.

8 N either let us commit fornication, as some of them committed and fell dead: in one day, twenty-three thousand.

Chúng ta chớ dâm dục như mấy người trong họ đã dâm dục, mà trong một ngày có hai vạn ba ngàn người bị bỏ mạng.

9 N either let us tempt the Christ, as some of them also tempted and perished by the serpents.

Cũng chớ thử thách Chúa như mấy người trong họ đã thử thách mà bị loài rắn hủy diệt.

10 N either murmur ye, as some of them also murmured and perished by the destroyer.

Lại cũng chớ lằm bằm như nấy người trong họ đã lằm bằm mà bị chết bởi kẻ hủy diệt.

11 N ow all these things happened unto them as types, and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

Những sự ấy có nghĩa hình bóng, và họ đã lưu truyền để khuyên bảo chúng ta là kẻ ở gần cuối cùng các đời.

12 T herefore let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

Vậy thì, ai tưởng mình đứng, hãy giữ kẻo ngã.

13 N o temptation has taken you but such as is common to man, but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above what ye are able but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Những sự cám dỗ đến cho anh em, chẳng có sự nào quá sức loài người. Đức Chúa Trời là thành tín, Ngài chẳng hề cho anh em bị cám dỗ quá sức mình đâu; nhưng trong sự cám dỗ, Ngài cũng mở đàng cho ra khỏi, để anh em có thể chịu được.

14 T herefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

Hỡi kẻ yêu dấu của tôi, vậy nên hãy tránh khỏi sự thờ lạy hình tượng.

15 ¶ I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

Tôi nói với anh em cũng như nói với kẻ thông minh; chính anh em hãy suy xét điều tôi nói.

16 T he cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the fellowship of the blood of the Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the fellowship of the body of the Christ?

Cái chén phước lành mà chúng ta chúc phước, há chẳng phải là thông với huyết của Đấng Christ sao? Cái bánh mà chúng ta bẻ, há chẳng phải là thông với thân thể của Đấng Christ sao?

17 F or one loaf of bread means that many are one body, for we are all partakers of that one loaf.

Vì chỉ có một cái bánh, chúng ta dầu nhiều, cũng chỉ một thân thể; bởi chưng chúng ta đều có phần chung trong một cái bánh.

18 B ehold Israel after the flesh: are not those who eat of the sacrifices participants of the altar?

Hãy xem dân Y-sơ-ra-ên theo phần xác; những kẻ ăn thịt con sinh tế, há không thông đồng với bàn thờ sao?

19 W hat do I say then? that the idol is anything or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is anything?

Nói vậy có ý chi? Của cùng thần tượng có ra gì chẳng?

20 B ut I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God; and I would not that ye should be participants of demons.

Chắc là không; nhưng đồ người ngoại đạo cúng tế là cúng tế các quỉ, chớ không phải cúng tế Đức Chúa Trời. Vậy, tôi không muốn anh em thông đồng với các quỉ.

21 Y e cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; ye cannot be participants of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.

Anh em chẳng có thể uống chén của Chúa và cũng uống chén của các quỉ; chẳng có thể dự tiệc của Chúa, lại dự tiệc của các quỉ.

22 S hall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

Hay là chúng ta muốn trêu lòng Chúa ghen chăng? Chúng ta há mạnh hơn Ngài sao?

23 ¶ All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient; all things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify.

Mọi sự đều có phép làm, nhưng chẳng phải mọi sự đều có ích; mọi sự đều có phép làm, nhưng chẳng phải mọi sự đều làm gương tốt.

24 L et no one seek his own good, but that of the other.

Chớ ai tìm lợi riêng cho mình, nhưng ai nấy hãy tìm cho kẻ khác.

25 W hatever is sold in the market, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake;

Phàm vật gì bán ở hàng thịt, hãy ăn, đừng vì cớ lương tâm mà hỏi chi về việc đó;

26 f or the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.

bởi chưng đất và mọi vật chứa trong đất đều thuộc về Chúa.

27 I f any of those that do not believe bid you to a feast, and ye are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you asking no questions for conscience sake.

Nếu có người chẳng tin mời anh em, và anh em muốn đi, thì không cứ họ dọn ra đồ gì, hãy ăn đi hết thảy, đừng vì cớ lương tâm mà hỏi chi hết.

28 B ut if anyone says unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, do not eat it for the sake of him that disclosed it and for conscience sake; for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof:

Song nếu có ai nói với anh em rằng: Cái nầy đã dâng làm của cúng, thì chớ ăn, vì cớ người đã bảo trước mình, lại vì cớ lương tâm:

29 c onscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other, for why should my liberty be judged by another man’s conscience?

tôi chẳng nói về lương tâm anh em, nhưng về lương tâm người đó. Vả, vì cớ nào sự tự do tôi phải bị lương tâm kẻ khác đoán xét?

30 F or if I by grace am a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

Nếu tôi tạ ơn rồi ăn, cớ nào vì một bữa ăn đã cảm ơn mà lại bị chê bai?

31 W hether therefore ye eat or drink or whatever ye do, do everything for the glory of God.

Vậy, anh em hoặc ăn, hoặc uống, hay là làm sự chi khác, hãy vì sự vinh hiển Đức Chúa Trời mà làm.

32 B e without offense, neither to the Jews nor to the Gentiles nor to the congregation of God;

Đừng làm gương xấu cho người Giu-đa, người Gờ-réc, hay là Hội thánh của Đức Chúa Trời;

33 e ven as I please everyone in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

hãy như tôi gắng sức đẹp lòng mọi người trong mọi việc, chẳng tìm ích lợi riêng cho mình, nhưng cho phần nhiều người, để họ được cứu.
