1 ¶ Now these are the sons of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and that returned unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city,
These are the people who left the land of Babylon and returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own city. Their families had been taken away to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon.

Now these are the men who came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer. But they were not able to show that their fathers and they were children of Israel:

62 T hese sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but they were not found; therefore, they were, as polluted, put from the priesthood.
These men looked for their names among the names of all the families, but could not find them. So they were thought of as being unclean, and were not allowed to work as religious leaders.
63 A nd the Tirshatha said unto them that they should not eat of the most holy things until there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.
And the leader told them that they should not eat from the most holy things until a religious leader learned God’s will by the Urim and Thummin.
64 ¶ The whole congregation united as one man was forty-two thousand three hundred and seventy,

65 b esides their slaves and their maids, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and there were among them two hundred men and women who were singers.

68 A nd some of the heads of the fathers, when they came to the house of the LORD which was at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place.
When they came to the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, some of the heads of the family groups gave a free-will gift for the house of God to be built again on the same place.
69 T hey gave after their ability unto the treasure of the work sixty-one thousand drams of gold and five thousand pounds of silver and one hundred priests’ garments.
As they were able, they gave 61, 000 gold-pieces and 5, 000 silverpieces and 100 coats for the religious leaders, for the work to be done.
70 S o the priests and the Levites and those of the people and the singers and the porters and the Nethinims dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.
So the religious leaders, the Levites, some of the people, the singers, the gate-keepers and the servants of the Lord’s house lived in their own cities, and all Israel lived in their cities.
