1 ¶ As the hart pants after the water brooks, so does my soul pant after thee, O God.
As the deer desires rivers of water, so my soul desires You, O God.
2 M y soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and appear before God?
My soul is thirsty for God, for the living God. When will I come and meet with God?
3 M y tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
4 I will remember these things; I will pour out my soul in me. When I shall be included in the number; I will go with them to the house of God with voice of joy and praise, dancing in the multitude.
These things I remember, and I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go with many people and lead them to the house of God, with the voice of thankful joy, among the many happy people.
5 W hy art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted against me? Wait thou for God, for I shall yet praise him for the wellbeing of his presence.
Why are you sad, O my soul? Why have you become troubled within me? Hope in God, for I will praise Him again for His help of being near me.
6 ¶ O my God, my soul is cast down within me; therefore I will remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the mountain of Mizar.
O my God, my soul is troubled within me. So I remember You from the land of the Jordan and the tops of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
7 D eep calls unto deep at the voice of thy waterspouts; all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
Sea calls to sea at the sound of Your waterfalls. All Your waves have rolled over me.
8 Y et the LORD will command his mercy in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.
The Lord will send His loving-kindness in the day. And His song will be with me in the night, a prayer to the God of my life.
9 I will say unto God, My rock, why hast thou forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
I will say to God my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why do I have sorrow because those who hate me come against me with power?”
10 I t is as death in my bones when my enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?
As a breaking of my bones, those who hate me speak sharp words to me. All day long they say to me, “Where is your God?”
11 W hy art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? Wait thou for God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the saving health of my countenance and my God.
Why are you sad, O my soul? Why have you become troubled within me? Hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my help and my God.
