1 ¶ And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,
The Lord said to Moses,
2 C ommand the sons of Israel that they put out of the camp every leper and every one that has an issue and anyone who is defiled by the dead.
“Tell the people of Israel to send away from the tents every person with a bad skin disease, every one with a flow that is unclean, and every one who is unclean because of a dead person.
3 B oth male and female shall ye put out; ye shall put them outside the camp; that they not defile the camp of those among whom I dwell.
Send away both male and female. Send them away from the tents so they will not make the place sinful where I live among them.”
4 A nd the sons of Israel did so and put them outside the camp; as the LORD spoke unto Moses, so did the sons of Israel.
The people of Israel did so. They sent them away from the tents. The people of Israel did just as the Lord had said to Moses. Paying Back for Wrongs Done
5 A nd the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,
Then the Lord said to Moses,
6 S peak unto the sons of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against the LORD, and that person is guilty,
“Say to the people of Israel, ‘When a man or woman sins the way that man sins by not acting in faith toward the Lord, and that person is guilty,
7 t hen they shall confess their sin which they have done, and he shall recompense his guilt with the principal thereof and add unto it the fifth part thereof and give it unto him against whom he is guilty.
then he must tell about the sins he has done. He must pay in full for his wrong-doing, and add one-fifth part to it, and give it to the one he has sinned against.
8 B ut if that man has no redeemer to recompense the trespass unto, let the trespass be recompensed unto the LORD, even to the priest, beside the ram of the reconciliations, whereby reconciliation shall be made for him.
But if the man has no brother to whom pay for the wrong can be made, then it must go to the Lord for the religious leader. He must also give a ram to pay for his sins. And his sins will be forgiven.
9 A nd every offering of all the holy things of the sons of Israel, which they bring unto the priest, shall be his.
Every gift of all the holy things of the Israelites which they bring to the religious leader will become his.
10 A nd every man’s sanctified things shall be his; likewise whatever any man gives the priest, it shall be his.
So every man’s holy gifts will be his. Whatever any man gives to the religious leader will be his.’” Wives Who Are Not Faithful
11 ¶ And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,
The Lord said to Moses,
12 S peak unto the sons of Israel and say unto them, If any man’s wife goes astray and betrays him,
“Say to the people of Israel, ‘If a man’s wife turns away and is not faithful to him,
13 a nd a man lies with her carnally, and it is hid from the eyes of her husband because she contaminated herself in secret, and there is no witness against her, neither was she taken in the act;
and another man has sex with her and it is hidden from her husband’s eyes, even if it is hidden, she will be unclean. And even if no one speaks against her, because she has not been caught in the act,
14 i f a spirit of jealousy should come upon him, and he becomes jealous of his wife, and she is defiled; or if a spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he becomes jealous of his wife, and she is not defiled,
but a spirit of jealousy comes over her husband, he will be jealous of his wife when she has made herself unclean. Or if he becomes jealous of his wife when she has done nothing to make herself unclean,
15 t hen shall the man bring his wife unto the priest, and he shall bring her offering for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is a present of jealousy, a present of remembrance, which brings iniquity to memory.
then the man must bring his wife to the religious leader. He must bring one-tenth part of a basket of barley as the gift needed for her. He must not pour oil on it. He must not put special perfume on it. For it is a grain gift of jealousy. It is a grain gift to make the sin remembered.
16 A nd the priest shall bring her near and set her before the LORD.
‘Then the religious leader will bring her near and have her stand before the Lord.
17 T hen the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is in the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take and put it into the water.
The religious leader will take holy water in a clay pot. He will take some of the dust on the floor of the meeting tent and put it into the water.
18 A nd the priest shall cause the woman to stand before the LORD and shall uncover the woman’s head and put the present of remembrance in her hands, which is the present of jealousy; and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that brings the curse.
Then the religious leader will have the woman stand before the Lord and let the hair of the woman’s head hang loose. He will put the grain gift of remembering into her hands. It is the grain gift of jealousy. In the religious leader’s hand will be the bitter water that can bring a curse to the woman.
19 A nd the priest shall charge her by an oath and say unto the woman, If no man has lain with thee, and if thou hast not gone astray from thy husband to uncleanness, thou shalt be clean from this bitter water that brings the curse.
Then the religious leader will have her make a promise. He will say to the woman, “If no man has lain with you and if you have not turned away into sin, while under the power of your husband, this bitter water that brings punishment will not hurt you.
20 B ut if thou hast gone astray from thy husband and hast defiled thyself and some man has placed seed in thee other than thine husband,
If you have turned away, while under the power of your husband, and have made yourself unclean by having another man who is not your husband,”
21 ( the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of cursing) and the priest shall say unto the woman, Let the LORD make thee a curse and an oath among thy people when the LORD makes thy thigh to fail and thy belly to swell,
then the religious leader will have the woman make a promise so she will be punished if she has sinned. He will say to the woman, “May the Lord make you a curse among your people. May the Lord make your leg waste away and your stomach grow bigger.
22 a nd this water that causes the curse shall go into thy bowels and cause thy belly to swell and thy thigh to fail. And the woman shall say, Amen, amen.
This water that brings a curse will go into your stomach and make it grow bigger and your leg to waste away.” And the woman will say, “Let it be so. Let it be so.”
23 A nd the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out with the bitter water;
‘Then the religious leader will write these curses in a book. And he will wash them off into the bitter water.
24 a nd he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water that brings the curse, and the water that brings the curse shall enter into her as bitter.
He will make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse. The water that brings a curse will go into her and give her pain.
25 T hen the priest shall take the present of jealousy out of the woman’s hand and shall wave the offering before the LORD and offer it before the altar.
The religious leader will take the grain gift of jealousy from the woman’s hand. He will wave the grain gift before the Lord and bring it to the altar.
26 A nd the priest shall take a handful of the present, in memory of her, and incense it upon the altar and afterward shall cause the woman to drink the water.
The religious leader will fill his hand with the grain gift, as the part to be remembered. And he will burn it on the altar. Then he will make the woman drink the water.
27 H e shall give her, therefore, the water to drink, and it shall come to pass, that if she is defiled and has betrayed her husband, that the water that works the curse shall enter into her in bitterness, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall fail; and that woman shall be a curse among her people.
If she has not been faithful to her husband, the water that brings a curse will go into her and give her pain. Her stomach will get larger and her leg will become as dead. A curse will come upon the woman among her people.
28 B ut if the woman is not defiled, but is clean; then she shall be free and shall conceive seed.
But if the woman has not sinned and is clean, she will be free and able to have children.
29 T his is the law of jealousies when a woman goes astray, being under the power of her husband, and is defiled;
‘This is the law of jealousy. If a wife who is under the power of her husband turns away and makes herself unclean,
30 o r of the husband upon whom a spirit of jealousy comes, and he is jealous over his wife; he shall then present the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall execute in her all this law.
and a spirit of jealousy comes upon a man, making him jealous of his wife, then he must make the woman stand before the Lord. And the religious leader will do to her all the rules of this Law.
31 A nd that man shall be free from iniquity, and the woman shall bear her iniquity.
The husband will be free from guilt. But the woman will carry her guilt.’”
