1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

Jesus and His followers came to the other side of the sea to the country of the Gerasenes.

2 A nd when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him a man of the tombs, with an unclean spirit,

He got out of the boat. At once a man came to Him from among the graves. This man had a demon.

3 w ho had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, no, not with chains,

He lived among the graves. No man could tie him, even with chains.

4 b ecause many times he had been bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been broken in pieces by him, and the fetters shattered; neither could anyone tame him.

Many times he had been tied with chains on his feet. He had broken the chains as well as the irons from his hands and legs. No man was strong enough to keep him tied.

5 A nd always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and hurting himself with stones.

Night and day he was among the graves and in the mountains. He would cry out and cut himself with stones.

6 B ut when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him.

When the man with the demon saw Jesus a long way off, he ran and worshiped Him.

7 C rying out with a loud voice, he said, What hast thou with me, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.

The man spoke with a loud voice and said, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I ask You, in the name of God, do not hurt me!”

8 F or he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

At the same time, Jesus was saying, “Come out of the man, you demon!”

9 A nd he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion, for we are many.

Jesus asked the demon, “What is your name?” He said, “My name is Many, for there are many of us.”

10 A nd he besought him much that he would not send him away out of that country.

The demons asked Jesus not to send them out of the country.

11 N ow near unto the mountains there was a great herd of swine feeding,

There were many pigs feeding on the mountain side.

12 a nd all those devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.

The demons asked Him saying, “Send us to the pigs that we may go into them.”

13 A nd forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out and entered into the swine, and the herd fell over a cliff into the sea (they were about two thousand) and were choked in the sea.

Then Jesus let them do what they wanted to do. So they went into the pigs. The pigs ran fast down the side of the mountain and into the sea and died. There were about 2, 000.

14 A nd those that fed the swine fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people went out to see what it was that had happened.

The men who cared for the pigs ran fast to the town and out to the country telling what had been done. People came to see what had happened.

15 A nd they come to Jesus and see him that was tormented by the demon and had the legion sitting and clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

They came to Jesus and saw the man who had had the demons. He was sitting with clothes on and in his right mind. The men were afraid.

16 A nd those that saw it told them what happened to him that had the demon and also concerning the swine.

Those who had seen it told what had happened to the man who had had the demons. They told what had happened to the pigs.

17 A nd they began to plead with him to depart out of their borders.

Then they asked Jesus to leave their country.

18 A nd as he was entering into the ship, he that had been troubled by the demon besought him that he might be with him.

Jesus got into the boat. The man who had had the demons asked to go with Him.

19 B ut Jesus suffered him not but said unto him, Go home to thy friends and family and tell them what great things the Lord has done with thee and how he has had mercy on thee.

Jesus would not let him go but said to him, “Go home to your own people. Tell them what great things the Lord has done for you. Tell them how He had pity on you.”

20 A nd he went and began to publish in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done with him, and everyone marveled.

The man went his way and told everyone in the land of Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him. All the people were surprised and wondered. Two Were Healed through Faith

21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, a great multitude gathered unto him, and he was near the sea.

Then Jesus went by boat over to the other side of the sea. Many people gathered around Him. He stayed by the sea-shore.

22 A nd one of the princes of the synagogue came, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet

Jairus was one of the leaders of the Jewish place of worship. As Jairus came to Jesus, he got down at His feet.

23 a nd besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lies at the point of death; come and lay thy hands on her that she may be saved, and she shall live.

He cried out to Jesus and said, “My little daughter is almost dead. Come and put Your hand on her that she may be healed and live.”

24 A nd Jesus went with him; and a great multitude followed him and thronged him.

Jesus went with him. Many people followed and pushed around Jesus.

25 A nd a certain woman, who had an issue of blood twelve years

A woman had been sick for twelve years with a flow of blood.

26 a nd had suffered many things of many physicians and had spent all that she had and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse;

She had suffered much because of having many doctors. She had spent all the money she had. She had received no help, but became worse.

27 w hen she had heard of Jesus, came from behind among the multitude and touched his garment.

She heard about Jesus and went among the people who were following Him. She touched His coat.

28 F or she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be saved.

For she said to herself, “If I can only touch His coat, I will be healed.”

29 A nd straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

At once the flow of blood stopped. She felt in her body that she was healed of her sickness.

30 A nd Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned to the crowd and said, Who touched my clothes?

At the same time Jesus knew that power had gone from Him. He turned and said to the people following Him, “Who touched My coat?”

31 A nd his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee and sayest thou, Who touched me?

His followers said to Him, “You see the many people pushing on every side. Why do You ask, ‘Who touched My coat?’”

32 A nd he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.

He looked around to see who had done it.

33 B ut the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him and told him all the truth.

The woman was filled with fear when she knew what had happened to her. She came and got down before Jesus and told Him the truth.

34 A nd he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith has made thee saved; go in peace and remain whole of thy plague.

He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free from your sickness.”

35 While he yet spoke, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain who said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?

While Jesus spoke, men came from the house of the leader of the place of worship. They said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher anymore?”

36 A s soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he said unto the prince of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

Jesus heard this. He said to the leader of the Jewish place of worship, “Do not be afraid, just believe.”

37 A nd he suffered no one to follow him, except Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.

He allowed no one to go with Him but Peter and James and John, the brother of James.

38 A nd they came to the house of the prince of the synagogue and saw the tumult and those that wept and wailed greatly.

They came to the house where the leader of the place of worship lived. Jesus found many people making much noise and crying.

39 A nd when he was come in, he said unto them, Why make ye this ado and weep? The damsel is not dead, but sleeps.

He went in and asked them, “Why is there so much noise and crying? The girl is not dead. She is sleeping.”

40 A nd they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he took the father and the mother of the damsel and those that were with him and entered in where the damsel was lying.

They laughed at Jesus. But He sent them all out of the room. Then He took the girl’s father and mother and those who were with Him. They went into the room where the girl was.

41 A nd taking the damsel by the hand, he said unto her, Talitha cumi, which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.

He took the girl by the hand and said, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”

42 A nd straightway the damsel arose and walked, for she was twelve years old. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

At once the girl got up and walked. She was twelve years old. They were very much surprised and wondered about it.

43 A nd he charged them straitly that no one should know it and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

He spoke sharp words to them that they should not tell anyone. He told them to give her something to eat.
