1 C all upon you, then, do I -- the prisoner of the Lord -- to walk worthily of the calling with which ye were called,

So ermahne nun euch ich Gefangener in dem HERRN, daß ihr wandelt, wie sich's gebührt eurer Berufung, mit der ihr berufen seid,

2 w ith all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love,

mit aller Demut und Sanftmut, mit Geduld, und vertraget einer den andern in der Liebe

3 b eing diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of the peace;

und seid fleißig, zu halten die Einigkeit im Geist durch das Band des Friedens:

4 o ne body and one Spirit, according as also ye were called in one hope of your calling;

ein Leib und ein Geist, wie ihr auch berufen seid auf einerlei Hoffnung eurer Berufung;

5 o ne Lord, one faith, one baptism,

ein HERR, ein Glaube, eine Taufe;

6 o ne God and Father of all, who over all, and through all, and in you all,

ein Gott und Vater unser aller, der da ist über euch allen und durch euch alle und in euch allen.

7 a nd to each one of you was given the grace, according to the measure of the gift of Christ,

Einem jeglichen aber unter uns ist gegeben die Gnade nach dem Maß der Gabe Christi.

8 w herefore, he saith, `Having gone up on high he led captive captivity, and gave gifts to men,' --

Darum heißt es: "Er ist aufgefahren in die Höhe und hat das Gefängnis gefangengeführt und hat den Menschen Gaben gegeben."

9 a nd that, he went up, what is it except that he also went down first to the lower parts of the earth?

Daß er aber aufgefahren ist, was ist's, denn daß er zuvor ist hinuntergefahren in die untersten Örter der Erde?

10 h e who went down is the same also who went up far above all the heavens, that He may fill all things --

Der hinuntergefahren ist, das ist derselbe, der aufgefahren ist über alle Himmel, auf daß er alles erfüllte.

11 a nd He gave some apostles, and some prophets, and some proclaimers of good news, and some shepherds and teachers,

Und er hat etliche zu Aposteln gesetzt, etliche aber zu Propheten, etliche zu Evangelisten, etliche zu Hirten und Lehrern,

12 u nto the perfecting of the saints, for a work of ministration, for a building up of the body of the Christ,

daß die Heiligen zugerichtet werden zum Werk des Dienstes, dadurch der Leib Christi erbaut werde,

13 t ill we may all come to the unity of the faith and of the recognition of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to a measure of stature of the fulness of the Christ,

bis daß wir alle hinkommen zu einerlei Glauben und Erkenntnis des Sohnes Gottes und ein vollkommener Mann werden, der da sei im Maße des vollkommenen Alters Christi,

14 t hat we may no more be babes, tossed and borne about by every wind of the teaching, in the sleight of men, in craftiness, unto the artifice of leading astray,

auf daß wir nicht mehr Kinder seien und uns bewegen und wiegen lassen von allerlei Wind der Lehre durch Schalkheit der Menschen und Täuscherei, womit sie uns erschleichen, uns zu verführen.

15 a nd, being true in love, we may increase to Him all things, who is the head -- the Christ;

Lasset uns aber rechtschaffen sein in der Liebe und wachsen in allen Stücken an dem, der das Haupt ist, Christus,

16 f rom whom the whole body, being fitly joined together and united, through the supply of every joint, according to the working in the measure of each single part, the increase of the body doth make for the building up of itself in love.

von welchem aus der ganze Leib zusammengefügt ist und ein Glied am andern hanget durch alle Gelenke, dadurch eins dem andern Handreichung tut nach dem Werk eines jeglichen Gliedes in seinem Maße und macht, daß der Leib wächst zu seiner selbst Besserung, und das alles in Liebe.

17 T his, then, I say, and I testify in the Lord; ye are no more to walk, as also the other nations walk, in the vanity of their mind,

So sage ich nun und bezeuge in dem HERRN, daß ihr nicht mehr wandelt, wie die andern Heiden wandeln in der Eitelkeit ihres Sinnes,

18 b eing darkened in the understanding, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart,

deren Verstand verfinstert ist, und die entfremdet sind von dem Leben, das aus Gott ist, durch die Unwissenheit, so in ihnen ist, durch die Blindheit ihres Herzens;

19 w ho, having ceased to feel, themselves did give up to the lasciviousness, for the working of all uncleanness in greediness;

welche ruchlos sind und ergeben sich der Unzucht und treiben allerlei Unreinigkeit samt dem Geiz.

20 a nd ye did not so learn the Christ,

Ihr aber habt Christum nicht also gelernt,

21 i f so be ye did hear him, and in him were taught, as truth is in Jesus;

so ihr anders von ihm gehört habt und in ihm belehrt, wie in Jesu ein rechtschaffenes Wesen ist.

22 y e are to put off concerning the former behaviour the old man, that is corrupt according to the desires of the deceit,

So legt nun von euch ab nach dem vorigen Wandel den alten Menschen, der durch Lüste im Irrtum sich verderbt.

23 a nd to be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

Erneuert euch aber im Geist eures Gemüts

24 a nd to put on the new man, which, according to God, was created in righteousness and kindness of the truth.

und ziehet den neuen Menschen an, der nach Gott geschaffen ist in rechtschaffener Gerechtigkeit und Heiligkeit.

25 W herefore, putting away the lying, speak truth each with his neighbour, because we are members one of another;

Darum leget die Lüge ab und redet die Wahrheit, ein jeglicher mit seinem Nächsten, sintemal wir untereinander Glieder sind.

26 b e angry and do not sin; let not the sun go down upon your wrath,

Zürnet, und sündiget nicht; lasset die Sonne nicht über eurem Zorn untergehen.

27 n either give place to the devil;

Gebet auch nicht Raum dem Lästerer.

28 w hoso is stealing let him no more steal, but rather let him labour, working the thing that is good with the hands, that he may have to impart to him having need.

Wer gestohlen hat der stehle nicht mehr, sondern arbeite und schaffe mit den Händen etwas Gutes, auf daß er habe, zu geben dem Dürftigen.

29 L et no corrupt word out of your mouth go forth, but what is good unto the needful building up, that it may give grace to the hearers;

Lasset kein faul Geschwätz aus eurem Munde gehen, sondern was nützlich zur Besserung ist, wo es not tut, daß es holdselig sei zu hören.

30 a nd make not sorrowful the Holy Spirit of God, in which ye were sealed to a day of redemption.

Und betrübet nicht den heiligen Geist Gottes, mit dem ihr versiegelt seid auf den Tag der Erlösung.

31 L et all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil-speaking, be put away from you, with all malice,

Alle Bitterkeit und Grimm und Zorn und Geschrei und Lästerung sei ferne von euch samt aller Bosheit.

32 a nd become one to another kind, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, according as also God in Christ did forgive you.

Seid aber untereinander freundlich, herzlich und vergebet einer dem andern, gleichwie Gott euch auch vergeben hat in Christo.
