1 A nd it cometh to pass afterwards, that the king of the Bene-Ammon dieth, and Hanun his son reigneth in his stead,

Und es begab sich darnach, daß der König der Kinder Ammon starb, und sein Sohn Hanun ward König an seiner Statt.

2 a nd David saith, `I do kindness with Hanun son of Nahash, as his father did with me kindness;' and David sendeth to comfort him by the hand of his servants concerning his father, and the servants of David come in to the land of the Bene-Ammon.

Da sprach David: Ich will Barmherzigkeit tun an Hanun, dem Sohn Nahas, wie sein Vater an mir Barmherzigkeit getan hat. Und sandte hin und ließ ihn trösten durch seine Knechte über seinen Vater. Da nun die Knechte Davids ins Land der Kinder Ammon kamen,

3 A nd the heads of the Bene-Ammon say unto Hanun their lord, `Is David honouring thy father in thine eyes because he hath sent to thee comforters? for to search the city, and to spy it, and to overthrow it, hath not David sent his servants unto thee?'

sprachen die Gewaltigen der Kinder Ammon zu ihrem Herrn, Hanun: Meinst du, daß David deinen Vater ehren wolle, daß er Tröster zu dir gesandt hat? Meinst du nicht, daß er darum hat seine Knechte zu dir gesandt, daß er die Stadt erforsche und erkunde und umkehre?

4 A nd Hanun taketh the servants of David, and shaveth off the half of their beard, and cutteth off their long robes in the midst -- unto their buttocks, and sendeth them away;

Da nahm Hanun die Knechte David und schor ihnen den Bart halb und schnitt ihnen die Kleider halb ab bis an den Gürtel und ließ sie gehen.

5 a nd they declare to David, and he sendeth to meet them, for the men have been greatly ashamed, and the king saith, `Abide in Jericho till your beard doth spring up -- then ye have returned.'

Da das David ward angesagt, sandte er ihnen entgegen; denn die Männer waren sehr geschändet. Und der König ließ ihnen sagen: Bleibt zu Jericho, bis euer Bart gewachsen; so kommt dann wieder.

6 A nd the Bene-Ammon see that they have been abhorred by David, and the Bene-Ammon send and hire Aram of Beth-Rehob, and Aram of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah a thousand men, and Ish-Tob twelve thousand men;

Da aber die Kinder Ammon sahen, daß sie vor David stinkend geworden waren, sandten sie hin und dingten die Syrer des Hauses Rehob und die Syrer zu Zoba, zwanzigtausend Mann Fußvolk, und von dem König Maachas tausend Mann und von Is-Tob zwölftausend Mann.

7 a nd David heareth, and sendeth Joab, and all the host -- the mighty men.

Da das David hörte, sandte er Joab mit dem ganzen Heer der Kriegsleute.

8 A nd the Bene-Ammon come out, and set battle in array, at the opening of the gate, and Aram of Zoba, and Rehob, and Ish-Tob, and Maacah, by themselves in the field;

Und die Kinder Ammon zogen aus und rüsteten sich zum Streit vor dem Eingang des Tors. Die Syrer aber von Zoba, von Rehob, von Is-Tob und von Maacha waren allein im Felde.

9 a nd Joab seeth that the front of the battle hath been unto him before and behind, and he chooseth of all the chosen in Israel, and setteth in array to meet Aram,

Da Joab nun sah, daß der Streit auf ihn gestellt war vorn und hinten, erwählte er aus aller jungen Mannschaft in Israel und stellte sich wider die Syrer.

10 a nd the rest of the people he hath given into the hand of Abishai his brother, and setteth in array to meet the Bene-Ammon.

Und das übrige Volk tat er unter die Hand seines Bruders Abisai, daß er sich rüstete wider dir Kinder Ammon,

11 A nd he saith, `If Aram be stronger than I, then thou hast been to me for salvation, and if the Bene-Ammon be stronger than thou, then I have come to give salvation to thee;

und sprach: Werden mir die Syrer überlegen sein, so komm mir zu Hilfe; werden aber die Kinder Ammon dir überlegen sein, so will ich dir zu Hilfe kommen.

12 b e strong and strengthen thyself for our people, and for the cities of our God, and Jehovah doth that which is good in His eyes.'

Sei getrost und laß uns stark sein für unser Volk und für die Städte unsers Gottes; der HERR aber tue, was ihm gefällt.

13 A nd Joab draweth nigh, and the people who with him, to battle against Aram, and they flee from his presence;

Und Joab machte sich herzu mit dem Volk, das bei ihm war, zu streiten wider die Syrer; und sie flohen vor ihm.

14 a nd the Bene-Ammon have seen that Aram hath fled, and they flee from the presence of Abishai, and go in to the city; and Joab turneth back from the Bene-Ammon, and cometh in to Jerusalem.

Und da die Kinder Ammon sahen, daß die Syrer flohen, flohen sie auch vor Abisai und zogen in die Stadt. Also kehrte Joab um von den Kindern Ammon und kam gen Jerusalem.

15 A nd Aram seeth that it is smitten before Israel, and they are gathered together;

Und da die Syrer sahen, daß sie geschlagen waren vor Israel, kamen sie zuhauf.

16 a nd Hadadezer sendeth, and bringeth out Aram which beyond the River, and they come in to Helam, and Shobach head of the host of Hadadezer before them.

Und Hadadeser sandte hin und brachte heraus die Syrer jenseit des Stromes und führte herein ihre Macht; und Sobach, der Feldhauptmann Hadadesers, zog vor ihnen her.

17 A nd it is declared to David, and he gathereth all Israel, and passeth over the Jordan, and cometh in to Helam, and Aram setteth itself in array to meet David, and they fight with him;

Da das David ward angesagt, sammelte er zuhauf das ganze Israel und zog über den Jordan und kam gen Helam. Und die Syrer stellten sich wider David, mit ihm zu streiten.

18 a nd Aram fleeth from the presence of Israel, and David slayeth of Aram seven hundred charioteers, and forty thousand horsemen, and Shobach head of its host he hath smitten, and he dieth there.

Aber die Syrer flohen vor Israel. Und David verderbte der Syrer siebenhundert Wagen und vierzigtausend Reiter; dazu Sobach, den Feldhauptmann, schlug er, daß er daselbst starb.

19 A nd all the kings -- servants of Hadadezer -- see that they have been smitten before Israel, and make peace with Israel, and serve them; and Aram is afraid to help any more the Bene-Ammon.

Da aber die Könige, die unter Hadadeser waren, sahen, daß sie geschlagen waren vor Israel, machten sie Frieden mit Israel und wurden ihnen untertan. Und die Syrer fürchteten sich, den Kindern Ammon mehr zu helfen.
