1 H e arose from there and came into the borders of Judea and beyond the Jordan. Multitudes came together to him again. As he usually did, he was again teaching them.
¶ And he left there and came into the borders of Judaea and behind the Jordan; and the multitude joined him again, and he taught them again as was his custom.
2 P harisees came to him testing him, and asked him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”
And the Pharisees came to him and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.
3 H e answered, “What did Moses command you?”
And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?
4 T hey said, “Moses allowed a certificate of divorce to be written, and to divorce her.”
And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorce and to put her away.
5 B ut Jesus said to them, “For your hardness of heart, he wrote you this commandment.
And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this commandment.
6 B ut from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female.
But at the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
7 F or this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will join to his wife,
For this cause shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall join to his wife;
8 a nd the two will become one flesh, so that they are no longer two, but one flesh.
and they that were two shall be made one flesh, so then they are no longer two, but one flesh.
9 W hat therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”
Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.
10 I n the house, his disciples asked him again about the same matter.
And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.
11 H e said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife, and marries another, commits adultery against her.
And he said unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another commits adultery against her.
12 I f a woman herself divorces her husband, and marries another, she commits adultery.”
And if the woman shall put away her husband and be married to another, she commits adultery.
13 T hey were bringing to him little children, that he should touch them, but the disciples rebuked those who were bringing them.
¶ And they brought young children to him that he should touch them, and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.
14 B ut when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation, and said to them, “Allow the little children to come to me! Don’t forbid them, for God’s Kingdom belongs to such as these.
And Jesus seeing it, became angry and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me and hinder them not, for of such is the kingdom of God.
15 M ost certainly I tell you, whoever will not receive God’s Kingdom like a little child, he will in no way enter into it.”
Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.
16 H e took them in his arms, and blessed them, laying his hands on them.
And taking them up in his arms and putting his hands upon them, he blessed them.
17 A s he was going out into the way, one ran to him, knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”
¶ And as he was leaving to continue his way, there came one running, who kneeled before him and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
18 J esus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except one—God.
And Jesus said unto him, Why dost thou call me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
19 Y ou know the commandments: ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not give false testimony,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and mother.’”
Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.
20 H e said to him, “Teacher, I have observed all these things from my youth.”
And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these I have observed from my youth.
21 J esus looking at him loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me, taking up the cross.”
Then Jesus beholding him loved him and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go, sell all that thou hast and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow me taking up thy stake (if thy desire is to be perfect).
22 B ut his face fell at that saying, and he went away sorrowful, for he was one who had great possessions.
But he, saddened by this word, went away grieved, for he had great possessions.
23 J esus looked around, and said to his disciples, “How difficult it is for those who have riches to enter into God’s Kingdom!”
Then Jesus, looking around, said unto his disciples, How hardly shall those that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
24 T he disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus answered again, “Children, how hard is it for those who trust in riches to enter into God’s Kingdom!
And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answered again and said unto them, Children, how hard is it for those that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
25 I t is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter into God’s Kingdom.”
It is easier to pass a cable through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
26 T hey were exceedingly astonished, saying to him, “Then who can be saved?”
But they were astonished even more, saying in themselves, Who then can save himself?
27 J esus, looking at them, said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God, for all things are possible with God.”
Then Jesus looking upon them said, For men it is impossible, but not for God because all things are possible for God.
28 P eter began to tell him, “Behold, we have left all, and have followed you.”
Then Peter began to say unto him, Behold, we have left all and have followed thee.
29 J esus said, “Most certainly I tell you, there is no one who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or land, for my sake, and for the sake of the Good News,
And answering him, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, There is no one that has left house or brethren or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands for my sake and the gospel’s
30 b ut he will receive one hundred times more now in this time, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and land, with persecutions; and in the age to come eternal life.
who shall not receive one hundredfold now in this time: houses and brethren and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the world to come eternal life.
31 B ut many who are first will be last; and the last first.”
But many of the first shall be last; and of the last first.
32 T hey were on the way, going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus was going in front of them, and they were amazed; and those who followed were afraid. He again took the twelve, and began to tell them the things that were going to happen to him.
¶ And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went before them; and they were amazed, and they followed him with fear. Then, taking the twelve aside again, he began to tell them what things would happen unto him,
33 “ Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death, and will deliver him to the Gentiles.
saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the princes of the priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death and shall deliver him to the Gentiles,
34 T hey will mock him, spit on him, scourge him, and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.”
and they shall mock him and shall scourge him and shall spit upon him and shall kill him; but the third day he shall rise again.
35 J ames and John, the sons of Zebedee, came near to him, saying, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we will ask.”
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou should do for us whatever we shall ask.
36 H e said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?”
And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?
37 T hey said to him, “Grant to us that we may sit, one at your right hand, and one at your left hand, in your glory.”
They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one at thy right hand and the other at thy left hand in thy glory.
38 B ut Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”
Then Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask; can ye drink the cup that I drink? Or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
39 T hey said to him, “We are able.” Jesus said to them, “You shall indeed drink the cup that I drink, and you shall be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with;
And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink the cup that I drink, and of the baptism that I am baptized with ye shall be baptized;
40 b ut to sit at my right hand and at my left hand is not mine to give, but for whom it has been prepared.”
but to sit at my right hand and at my left hand is not mine to give, but it shall be given to those for whom it is prepared.
41 W hen the ten heard it, they began to be indignant towards James and John.
And when the ten heard it, they began to be angry against James and John.
42 J esus summoned them, and said to them, “You know that they who are recognized as rulers over the nations lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
But Jesus, calling unto them, said unto them, Ye know that those who are seen to be princes among the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those that are great among them wield power over them.
43 B ut it shall not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant.
But it shall not be like this among you, for whosoever desires to make himself great among you shall be your servant;
44 W hoever of you wants to become first among you, shall be bondservant of all.
and whosoever of you that desires to be first shall be slave of all.
45 F or the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to serve and to give his life in ransom for many.
46 T hey came to Jericho. As he went out from Jericho, with his disciples and a great multitude, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road.
¶ And so they come to Jericho, and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.
47 W hen he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, and say, “Jesus, you son of David, have mercy on me!”
And hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
48 M any rebuked him, that he should be quiet, but he cried out much more, “You son of David, have mercy on me!”
And many told him to be silent, but he cried even more, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
49 J esus stood still, and said, “Call him.” They called the blind man, saying to him, “Cheer up! Get up. He is calling you!”
Then Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Have confidence, rise; he calls thee.
50 H e, casting away his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.
He, therefore, casting away his garment, rose and came to Jesus.
51 J esus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “Rabboni, that I may see again.”
And Jesus, answering, said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? And the blind man said unto him, Master, that I might receive my sight.
52 J esus said to him, “Go your way. Your faith has made you well.” Immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus on the way.
And Jesus said unto him, Go; thy faith has saved thee. And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus in the way.
