1 H ice pacto con mis ojos; ¿Cómo, pues, había yo de mirar a una virgen?

I made a covenant with mine eyes; How then should I look upon a virgin?

2 P orque ¿qué galardón me daría de arriba Dios, Y qué heredad el Omnipotente desde las alturas?

For what is the portion from God above, And the heritage from the Almighty on high?

3 ¿ No hay quebrantamiento para el impío, Y extrañamiento para los que hacen iniquidad?

Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, And disaster to the workers of iniquity?

4 ¿ No ve él mis caminos, Y cuenta todos mis pasos?

Doth not he see my ways, And number all my steps?

5 S i anduve con mentira, Y si mi pie se apresuró a engaño,

If I have walked with falsehood, And my foot hath hasted to deceit;

6 P éseme Dios en balanzas de justicia, Y conocerá mi integridad.

(Let me be weighed in an even balance, That God may know mine integrity);

7 S i mis pasos se apartaron del camino, Si mi corazón se fue tras mis ojos, Y si algo se pegó a mis manos,

If my step hath turned out of the way, And my heart walked after mine eyes, And if any spot hath cleaved to my hands:

8 S iembre yo, y otro coma, Y sea arrancada mi siembra.

Then let me sow, and let another eat; Yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

9 S i fue mi corazón engañado acerca de mujer, Y si estuve acechando a la puerta de mi prójimo,

If my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, And I have laid wait at my neighbor's door;

10 M uela para otro mi mujer, Y sobre ella otros se encorven.

Then let my wife grind unto another, And let others bow down upon her.

11 P orque es maldad e iniquidad Que han de castigar los jueces.

For that were a heinous crime; Yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges:

12 P orque es fuego que devoraría hasta el Abadón, Y consumiría toda mi hacienda.

For it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction, And would root out all mine increase.

13 S i hubiera tenido en poco el derecho de mi siervo y de mi sierva, Cuando ellos contendían conmigo,

If I have despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant, When they contended with me;

14 ¿ Qué haría yo cuando Dios se levantase? Y cuando él preguntara, ¿qué le respondería yo?

What then shall I do when God riseth up? And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

15 E l que en el vientre me hizo a mí, ¿no lo hizo a él? ¿Y no nos dispuso uno mismo en la matriz?

Did not he that made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?

16 S i estorbé el contento de los pobres, E hice desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;

If I have withheld the poor from their desire, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

17 S i comí mi bocado solo, Y no comió de él el huérfano

Or have eaten my morsel alone, And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

18 ( Porque desde mi juventud creció conmigo como con un padre, Y desde el vientre de mi madre fui guía de la viuda);

(Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And her have I guided from my mother's womb);

19 S i he visto que pereciera alguno sin vestido, Y al menesteroso sin abrigo;

If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, Or that the needy had no covering;

20 S i no me bendijeron sus lomos, Y del vellón de mis ovejas se calentaron;

If his loins have not blessed me, And if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

21 S i alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, Aunque viese que me ayudaran en la puerta;

If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, Because I saw my help in the gate:

22 M i espalda se caiga de mi hombro, Y el hueso de mi brazo sea quebrado.

Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, And mine arm be broken from the bone.

23 P orque temí el castigo de Dios, Contra cuya majestad yo no tendría poder.

For calamity from God is a terror to me, And by reason of his majesty I can do nothing.

24 S i puse en el oro mi esperanza, Y dije al oro: Mi confianza eres tú;

If I have made gold my hope, And have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

25 S i me alegré de que mis riquezas se multiplicasen, Y de que mi mano hallase mucho;

If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had gotten much;

26 S i he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, O a la luna cuando iba hermosa,

If I have beheld the sun when it shined, Or the moon walking in brightness,

27 Y mi corazón se engañó en secreto, Y mi boca besó mi mano;

And my heart hath been secretly enticed, And my mouth hath kissed my hand:

28 E sto también sería maldad juzgada; Porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; For I should have denied the God that is above.

29 S i me alegré en el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía, Y me regocijé cuando le halló el mal

If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, Or lifted up myself when evil found him;

30 ( Ni aun entregué al pecado mi lengua, Pidiendo maldición para su alma);

(Yea, I have not suffered by mouth to sin By asking his life with a curse);

31 S i mis siervos no decían: ¿Quién no se ha saciado de su carne?

If the men of my tent have not said, Who can find one that hath not been filled with his meat?

32 ( El forastero no pasaba fuera la noche; Mis puertas abría al caminante);

(The sojourner hath not lodged in the street; But I have opened my doors to the traveller);

33 S i encubrí como hombre mis transgresiones, Escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad,

If like Adam I have covered my transgressions, By hiding mine iniquity in my bosom,

34 P orque tuve temor de la gran multitud, Y el menosprecio de las familias me atemorizó, Y callé, y no salí de mi puerta;

Because I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, So that I kept silence, and went not out of the door-

35 Q uién me diera quien me oyese! He aquí mi confianza es que el Omnipotente testificará por mí, Aunque mi adversario me forme proceso.

Oh that I had one to hear me! (Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me); And that I had the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

36 C iertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, Y me lo ceñiría como una corona.

Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown:

37 Y o le contaría el número de mis pasos, Y como príncipe me presentaría ante él.

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; As a prince would I go near unto him.

38 S i mi tierra clama contra mí, Y lloran todos sus surcos;

If my land crieth out against me, And the furrows thereof weep together;

39 S i comí su sustancia sin dinero, O afligí el alma de sus dueños,

If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, Or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

40 E n lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, Y espinos en lugar de cebada. m Aquí terminan las palabras de Job.

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, And cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
