1 T he man lay with his wife Eve and she was going to have a child and she gave birth to Cain. She said, “I have given birth to a man with the help of the Lord.”
The man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man with Yahweh’s help.”
2 N ext she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was one who worked the ground.
Again she gave birth, to Cain’s brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 T he day came when Cain brought a gift of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.
As time passed, Cain brought an offering to Yahweh from the fruit of the ground.
4 B ut Abel brought a gift of the first-born of his flocks and of the fat parts. The Lord showed favor to Abel and his gift.
Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. Yahweh respected Abel and his offering,
5 B ut He had no respect for Cain and his gift. So Cain became very angry and his face became sad.
but he didn’t respect Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.
6 T hen the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why are you looking down?
Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?
7 W ill not your face be happy if you do well? If you do not do well, sin is waiting to destroy you. Its desire is to rule over you, but you must rule over it.”
If you do well, won’t it be lifted up? If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”
8 C ain told this to his brother Abel. And when they were in the field, Cain stood up against his brother Abel and killed him.
Cain said to Abel, his brother, “Let’s go into the field.” While they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.
9 T hen the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?” He said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10 T he Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to Me from the ground.
Yahweh said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground.
11 N ow you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
12 W hen you work the ground, it will no longer give its strength to you. You will always travel from place to place on the earth.”
From now on, when you till the ground, it won’t yield its strength to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.”
13 T hen Cain said to the Lord, “I am being punished more than I can take!
Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14 S ee, this day You have made me go away from the land. And I will be hidden from Your face. I will run away and move from place to place. And whoever finds me will kill me.”
Behold, you have driven me out today from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. Whoever finds me will kill me.”
15 S o the Lord said to him, “Whoever kills Cain will be punished by Me seven times worse.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain so that any one who found him would not kill him.
Yahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Yahweh appointed a sign for Cain, so that anyone finding him would not strike him.
16 T hen Cain went away from the face of the Lord, and stayed in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
Cain left Yahweh’s presence, and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17 C ain lay with his wife and she was going to have a child and she gave birth to Enoch. Cain built a city and gave it the name of Enoch, the name of his son.
Cain knew his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Enoch. He built a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
18 N ow Irad was born to Enoch. And Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. And Methushael became the father of Lamech.
To Enoch was born Irad. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.
19 L amech took two wives for himself. The name of one was Adah. And the name of the other was Zillah.
Lamech took two wives: the name of the first one was Adah, and the name of the second one was Zillah.
20 A dah gave birth to Jabal. He was the father of those who live in tents and have cattle.
Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
21 H is brother’s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and the horn.
His brother’s name was Jubal, who was the father of all who handle the harp and pipe.
22 Z illah gave birth to Tubal-cain who made things from brass and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
Zillah also gave birth to Tubal Cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron. Tubal Cain’s sister was Naamah.
23 A nd Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, listen to my voice. Hear what I say, you wives of Lamech. For I have killed a man for hurting me, and a boy for hitting me.
Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice. You wives of Lamech, listen to my speech, for I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.
24 I f those who hurt Cain are punished seven times worse, then those who hurt Lamech will be punished seventy-seven times worse.”
If Cain will be avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times.”
25 A nd Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and gave him the name Seth. For she said, “God has let me have another son in the place of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
Adam knew his wife again. She gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, saying, “for God has given me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
26 A son was born to Seth also, and he gave him the name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord.
A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on Yahweh’s name.
