1 N ow Elijah the Tishbite, of the people who were staying in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord the God of Israel lives, before Whom I stand, for sure there will be no rain or water on the grass in the early morning these years, except by my word.”
Elijah the Tishbite, who was one of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As Yahweh, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.”
2 A nd the word of the Lord came to him, saying,
Then Yahweh’s word came to him, saying,
3 “ Leave here and turn east. Hide yourself by the river Cherith, east of the Jordan.
“Go away from here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.
4 Y ou will drink from the river. And I have told the ravens to bring food to you there.”
You shall drink from the brook. I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”
5 S o he went and did what he was told by the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the river Cherith, east of the Jordan.
So he went and did according to Yahweh’s word; for he went and lived by the brook Cherith that is before the Jordan.
6 T he ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening. And he drank from the river.
The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.
7 B ut after a while, the river dried up, because there was no rain in the land. The Woman Whose Husband Had Died
After a while, the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.
8 T hen the word of the Lord came to him, saying,
Yahweh’s word came to him, saying,
9 “ Get up and go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. I have told a woman there, whose husband has died, to feed you.”
“Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain you.”
10 S o Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he came to the city gate, he saw a woman there gathering sticks. He called to her and said, “I ask of you, get me a little water in a jar, that I may drink.”
So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her, and said, “Please get me a little water in a jar, that I may drink.”
11 A s she was going to get it, he called to her, “I ask of you, bring me a piece of bread in your hand.”
As she was going to get it, he called to her, and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”
12 B ut she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have no bread. I only have enough flour in the jar to fill a hand, and a little oil in the jar. See, I am gathering a few sticks so I may go in and make it ready for me and my son. Then we will eat it and die.”
She said, “As Yahweh your God lives, I don’t have a cake, but a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jar. Behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”
13 E lijah said to her, “Have no fear. Go and do as you have said. But make me a little loaf of bread from it first, and bring it out to me. Then you may make one for yourself and for your son.
Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go and do as you have said; but make me a little cake from it first, and bring it out to me, and afterward make some for you and for your son.
14 F or the Lord God of Israel says, ‘The jar of flour will not be used up. And the jar of oil will not be empty, until the day the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’”
For Yahweh, the God of Israel says, ‘The jar of meal will not run out, and the jar of oil will not fail, until the day that Yahweh sends rain on the earth.’”
15 S o she went and did what Elijah said. And she and he and those of her house ate for many days.
She went and did according to the saying of Elijah; and she, and he, and her house, ate many days.
16 T he jar of flour was not used up, and the jar of oil did not become empty. It happened as was spoken by the word of the Lord through Elijah. Elijah and the Woman’s Son
The jar of meal didn’t run out, and the jar of oil did not fail, according to Yahweh’s word, which he spoke by Elijah.
17 A fter this the son of the woman who owned the house became sick. His sickness was so bad that there was no breath left in him.
After these things, the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became sick; and his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.
18 S o the woman said to Elijah, “What do I have to do with you, O man of God? You have come to me to have my sin be remembered, and to kill my son!”
She said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, you man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to memory, and to kill my son!”
19 H e said to her, “Give me your son.” Then he took him from her arms and carried him up to the room on the second floor where he stayed. And he laid him on his own bed.
He said to her, “Give me your son.” He took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the room where he stayed, and laid him on his own bed.
20 H e called to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, have You brought trouble to the woman I am staying with, by making her son die?”
He cried to Yahweh, and said, “Yahweh my God, have you also brought evil on the widow with whom I am staying, by killing her son?”
21 T hen he lay upon the child three times and called to the Lord, saying, “O Lord my God, I pray to You. Let this child’s life return to him.”
He stretched himself on the child three times, and cried to Yahweh, and said, “Yahweh my God, please let this child’s soul come into him again.”
22 T he Lord heard the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child returned to him and he became strong again.
Yahweh listened to the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.
23 E lijah took the child and brought him down from the second floor into the house and gave him to his mother. He said, “See, your son is alive.”
Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the room into the house, and delivered him to his mother; and Elijah said, “Behold, your son lives.”
24 T hen the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God. Now I know that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.”
The woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that Yahweh’s word in your mouth is truth.”
