1 A nd the man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man with the help of Jehovah.

The man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man with Yahweh’s help.”

2 A nd again she bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

Again she gave birth, to Cain’s brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3 A nd in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto Jehovah.

As time passed, Cain brought an offering to Yahweh from the fruit of the ground.

4 A nd Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And Jehovah had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. Yahweh respected Abel and his offering,

5 b ut unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

but he didn’t respect Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.

6 A nd Jehovah said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?

7 I f thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door: and unto thee shall be its desire, but do thou rule over it.

If you do well, won’t it be lifted up? If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”

8 A nd Cain told Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

Cain said to Abel, his brother, “Let’s go into the field.” While they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.

9 A nd Jehovah said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: am I my brother's keeper?

Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?” He said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10 A nd he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

Yahweh said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground.

11 A nd now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

12 w hen thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.

From now on, when you till the ground, it won’t yield its strength to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.”

13 A nd Cain said unto Jehovah, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14 B ehold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the ground; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it will come to pass, that whosoever findeth me will slay me.

Behold, you have driven me out today from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. Whoever finds me will kill me.”

15 A nd Jehovah said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And Jehovah appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.

Yahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Yahweh appointed a sign for Cain, so that anyone finding him would not strike him.

16 A nd Cain went out from the presence of Jehovah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

Cain left Yahweh’s presence, and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

17 A nd Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

Cain knew his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Enoch. He built a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

18 A nd unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methushael; and Methushael begat Lamech.

To Enoch was born Irad. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.

19 A nd Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

Lamech took two wives: the name of the first one was Adah, and the name of the second one was Zillah.

20 A nd Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents and have cattle.

Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.

21 A nd his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and pipe.

His brother’s name was Jubal, who was the father of all who handle the harp and pipe.

22 A nd Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

Zillah also gave birth to Tubal Cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron. Tubal Cain’s sister was Naamah.

23 A nd Lamech said unto his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: For I have slain a man for wounding me, And a young man for bruising me:

Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice. You wives of Lamech, listen to my speech, for I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.

24 I f Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

If Cain will be avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times.”

25 A nd Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth. For, said she, God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel; for Cain slew him.

Adam knew his wife again. She gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, saying, “for God has given me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”

26 A nd to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh. Then began men to call upon the name of Jehovah.

A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on Yahweh’s name.
