1 ¶ Then the prince of the priests said, Are these things so?

El sumo sacerdote dijo entonces: ¿Es esto así?

2 A nd he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken. The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,

Y él dijo: Varones hermanos y padres, oíd: El Dios de la gloria se apareció a nuestro padre Abraham, estando en Mesopotamia, antes que morase en Harán,

3 a nd said unto him, Get thee out of thy country and from thy kindred and come into the land which I shall show thee.

y le dijo: Sal de tu tierra y de tu parentela, y ven a la tierra que yo te mostraré.

4 T hen he came out of the land of the Chaldaeans and dwelt in Haran; and from there, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, in which ye now dwell.

Entonces salió de la tierra de los caldeos y habitó en Harán; y de allí, después de la muerte de su padre, Dios le trasladó a esta tierra, en la cual vosotros habitáis ahora.

5 A nd he gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on; yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

Y no le dio herencia en ella, ni aun para asentar un pie; pero le prometió que se la daría en posesión a él, y a su descendencia después de él, cuando no tenía ningún hijo.

6 A nd God spoke thus, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into slavery and mistreat them four hundred years.

Y le habló Dios así: Que su descendencia sería extranjera en tierra ajena, y que los reducirían a servidumbre y los maltratarían, por cuatrocientos años.

7 A nd the Gentiles unto whom they shall be in slavery I will judge, said God; and after that they shall come forth and serve me in this place.

Mas yo juzgaré, dijo Dios, a la nación de la cual serán siervos; y después de esto saldrán y me servirán en este lugar.

8 A nd he gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham begat Isaac and circumcised him the eighth day, and Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.

Y le dio el pacto de la circuncisión; y así Abraham engendró a Isaac, y le circuncidó al octavo día; e Isaac a Jacob, y Jacob a los doce patriarcas.

9 A nd the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt, but God was with him

Los patriarcas tuvieron envidia de José, y lo vendieron para Egipto; pero Dios estaba con él,

10 a nd delivered him out of all his afflictions and gave him grace and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

y le libró de todas sus tribulaciones, y le dio gracia y sabiduría delante de Faraón rey de Egipto, el cual lo constituyó gobernador sobre Egipto y sobre toda su casa.

11 N ow there came a famine over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great tribulation, and our fathers found no sustenance.

Sobrevino entonces hambre en toda la tierra de Egipto y de Canaán, y gran tribulación; y nuestros padres no hallaban alimentos.

12 B ut when Jacob heard that there was wheat in Egypt, he sent our fathers the first time.

Cuando oyó Jacob que había trigo en Egipto, envió a nuestros padres la primera vez.

13 A nd in the second Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph’s lineage was made known unto Pharaoh.

Y en la segunda, José se dio a conocer a sus hermanos, y fue manifestado a Faraón el linaje de José.

14 T hen Joseph sent and called his father Jacob unto him and all his kindred, seventy-five souls.

José envió a llamar a su padre Jacob, y a toda su parentela, en número de setenta y cinco personas.

15 S o Jacob went down into Egypt and died, he and our fathers,

Así descendió Jacob a Egipto, donde murió él, y también nuestros padres;

16 w ho were carried over into Shechem and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor of Shechem.

de allí fueron trasladados a Siquem, y puestos en el sepulcro que a precio de dinero había comprado Abraham de los hijos de Hamor en Siquem.

17 ¶ But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

Pero cuando se acercaba el tiempo de la promesa, que Dios había jurado a Abraham, el pueblo creció y se multiplicó en Egipto,

18 u ntil another king arose, who did not know Joseph.

hasta que se levantó en Egipto otro rey que no sabía nada de José.

19 T he same dealt subtly with our kindred and mistreated our fathers so that they exposed their babies to death, to the end that the generation would cease.

Este rey, usando de astucia con nuestro pueblo, maltrató a nuestros padres, a fin de que expusiesen a la muerte a sus niños de pecho, para que no se propagasen.

20 I n which time Moses was born and was beautiful to God and was nourished in his father’s house three months;

En aquel tiempo nació Moisés, y fue hermoso a los ojos de Dios; y fue criado tres meses en casa de su padre.

21 a nd when he was put in danger, Pharaoh’s daughter took him in and nourished him as her own son.

Pero siendo expuesto a la muerte, la hija de Faraón le recogió y le crió como a hijo suyo.

22 A nd Moses was taught in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was mighty in his words and deeds.

Y fue instruido Moisés en toda la sabiduría de los egipcios; y era poderoso en sus palabras y obras.

23 A nd when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the sons of Israel.

Cuando cumplió la edad de cuarenta años, le vino el deseo de visitar a sus hermanos, los hijos de Israel.

24 A nd seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him and smote the Egyptian, avenging the oppressed;

Y al ver a uno que era tratado injustamente, lo defendió, e hiriendo al egipcio, vengó al oprimido.

25 f or he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God was to give them saving health by his hand, but they had not understood.

Y él pensaba que sus hermanos comprenderían que Dios les estaba dando libertad por mano suya; mas ellos no lo comprendieron así.

26 A nd the next day he showed himself unto them as they strove and urged them to peace, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

Y al día siguiente, se presentó a unos de ellos que reñían, y trató de ponerlos en paz, diciendo: Varones, vosotros sois hermanos, ¿a qué fin os maltratáis el uno al otro?

27 B ut he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us?

Entonces el que maltrataba a su prójimo le dio un empujón, diciendo: ¿Quién te ha constituido gobernante y juez sobre nosotros?

28 W ilt thou kill me as thou didst the Egyptian yesterday?

¿Acaso quieres tú matarme, como mataste ayer al egipcio?

29 T hen Moses fled at this word and became a sojourner in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

Al oír esta palabra, Moisés huyó, y vivió como extranjero en tierra de Madián, donde engendró dos hijos.

30 ¶ And when forty years were expired, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.

Pasados cuarenta años, un ángel se le apareció en el desierto del monte Sinay, en la llama de fuego de una zarza.

31 W hen Moses saw it, he wondered at the vision; and as he drew near to consider it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,

Entonces Moisés, mirando, se asombró de la visión; y acercándose para observar, vino a él la voz del Señor:

32 s aying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled and dared not to behold.

Yo soy el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abraham, el Dios de Isaac, y el Dios de Jacob. Y Moisés, temblando, no se atrevía a mirar.

33 T hen the Lord said to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet; for the place where thou dost stand is holy ground.

Y le dijo el Señor: Quítate las sandalias de los pies, porque el lugar en que estás es tierra santa.

34 I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

Ciertamente he visto la aflicción de mi pueblo que está en Egipto, y he oído su gemido, y he descendido para librarlos. Ahora, pues, ven, te enviaré a Egipto.

35 T his Moses, whom they had refused, saying, Who made thee a prince and a judge? the same did God send as prince and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

A este Moisés, a quien habían rechazado, diciendo: ¿Quién te ha constituido gobernante y juez?, a éste lo envió Dios como gobernante y libertador por mano del ángel que se le apareció en la zarza.

36 H e brought them out, showing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years.

Éste los sacó, habiendo hecho prodigios y señales en tierra de Egipto, y en el Mar Rojo, y en el desierto por cuarenta años.

37 T his is that Moses, who said unto the sons of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren like unto me; him shall ye hear.

Éste es el Moisés que dijo a los hijos de Israel: El Señor vuestro Dios os suscitará un profeta como yo de entre vuestros hermanos; a él oiréis.

38 T his is he, who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him in the Mount Sinai and with our fathers, who received the oracles of life to give unto us;

Éste es aquel Moisés que estuvo en la congregación en el desierto con el ángel que le hablaba en el monte Sinay, y con nuestros padres, y que recibió palabras de vida para darnos;

39 t o whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,

al cual nuestros padres no quisieron obedecer, sino que le desecharon, y en sus corazones se volvieron a Egipto,

40 s aying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us; for as for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.

cuando dijeron a Aarón: Haznos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros; porque a este Moisés, que nos sacó de la tierra de Egipto, no sabemos qué le haya acontecido.

41 A nd then they made a calf and offered sacrifice unto the idol and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

Entonces hicieron un becerro, y ofrecieron sacrificio al ídolo, y se regocijaron en las obras de sus manos.

42 ¶ Then God withdrew and gave them up to worship the host of the heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

Y Dios se apartó, y los entregó a que rindiesen culto al ejército del cielo; como está escrito en el libro de los profetas: ¿Acaso me ofrecisteis víctimas y sacrificios En el desierto por cuarenta años, casa de Israel?

43 O n the contrary, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them; and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

Antes bien llevasteis el tabernáculo de Moloc, Y la estrella de vuestro dios Renfán, Figuras que os hicisteis para adorarlas. Yo también os transportaré más allá de Babilonia.

44 O ur fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen,

Tuvieron nuestros padres el tabernáculo del testimonio en el desierto, como había ordenado Dios cuando habló a Moisés para que lo hiciese conforme al modelo que había visto.

45 w hich also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers unto the days of David,

A su vez, habiéndolo recibido, nuestros padres lo introdujeron con Josué al tomar posesión de la tierra de los gentiles, a los cuales Dios arrojó de la presencia de nuestros padres, hasta los días de David;

46 w ho found grace before God and asked to provide a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

el cual halló gracia delante de Dios, y pidió proveer tabernáculo para el Dios de Jacob.

47 B ut Solomon built him a house.

Mas fue Salomón quien le edificó casa;

48 H owbeit the most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as saith the prophet,

si bien el Altísimo no habita en templos hechos a mano, como dice el profeta:

49 H eaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool; what house will ye build me? saith the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?

El cielo es mi trono, Y la tierra el estrado de mis pies. ¿Qué clase de casa me edificaréis?, dice el Señor; ¿O cuál es el lugar de mi reposo?

50 H as not my hand made all these things?

¿No hizo mi mano todas estas cosas?

51 ¶ Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do ye.

¡Duros de cerviz, e incircuncisos de corazón y de oídos! Vosotros siempre resistís al Espíritu Santo; como vuestros padres, así también vosotros.

52 W ho of the prophets have your fathers not persecuted? and they have slain those who announced before the coming of the Just One, of whom ye have now been the betrayers and murderers,

¿A cuál de los profetas no persiguieron vuestros padres? Y mataron a los que anunciaron de antemano la venida del Justo, de quien vosotros ahora habéis sido traidores y asesinos;

53 w ho have received the law by the disposition of angels and have not kept it.

vosotros que recibisteis la ley por disposición de ángeles, y no la guardasteis.

54 ¶ When they heard these things, they were divided in their hearts and gnashed on him with their teeth.

Oyendo estas cosas, se sentían heridos en lo más vivo, y rechinaban los dientes contra él.

55 B ut he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing on the right hand of God

Pero Esteban, lleno del Espíritu Santo, puestos los ojos en el cielo, vio la gloria de Dios, y a Jesús que estaba de pie a la diestra de Dios,

56 a nd said, Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

y dijo: He aquí, veo los cielos abiertos, y al Hijo del Hombre que está de pie a la diestra de Dios.

57 A nd crying out with a loud voice, they stopped their ears and ran upon him with one accord;

Entonces ellos, gritando a grandes voces, se taparon los oídos, y arremetieron a una contra él.

58 a nd casting him out of the city, they stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.

Y echándole fuera de la ciudad, comenzaron a apedrearle; y los testigos pusieron sus ropas a los pies de un joven que se llamaba Saulo.

59 A nd they stoned Stephen calling upon God and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

Y apedreaban a Esteban, mientras él invocaba y decía: Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu.

60 A nd he kneeled down and cried with a loud voice, Lord, impute not this sin to their charge. And having said this, he fell asleep in the Lord.

Y puesto de rodillas, clamó a gran voz: Señor, no les tomes en cuenta este pecado. Y habiendo dicho esto, se durmió.
