1 A nd it cometh to pass, when the wall hath been built, that I set up the doors, and the gatekeepers are appointed, and the singers, and the Levites,

¶ Now it came to pass, when the wall was built and I had set up the doors and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,

2 a nd I charge Hanani my brother, and Hananiah head of the palace, concerning Jerusalem -- for he as a man of truth, and fearing God above many --

that I commanded my brother Hanani, and Hananiah, the prince of the palace in Jerusalem (for he was as a man of truth and feared God above many);

3 a nd I say to them, `Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened till the heat of the sun, and while they are standing by let them shut the doors, and fasten, and appoint guards of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each in his guard, and each over-against his house.'

and I said unto them, Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot and even with the guards present, let them shut the doors and bar them. And appoint guards of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each one in his watch and each one to be in front of his house.

4 A nd the city broad on both sides, and great, and the people few in its midst, and there are no houses builded;

Now the city was large and great, but there were few people in it, and the houses were not rebuilt.

5 a nd my God putteth it unto my heart, and I gather the freeman, and the prefects, and the people, for the genealogy, and I find a book of the genealogy of those coming up at the beginning, and I find written in it: --

¶ And my God put it into my heart to gather together the principals and the rulers and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found the register of the genealogy of those who had come up before and found written therein:

6 T hese sons of the province, those coming up of the captives of the removal that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed -- and they turn back to Jerusalem and to Judah, each to his city --

These are the sons of the province, that came up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, had carried away and returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, each one unto his city,

7 w ho are coming in with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. Number of the men of the people of Israel:

who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:

12 S ons of Elam: a thousand two hundred fifty and four.

58 s ons of Jaala, sons of Darkon, sons of Giddel,

the sons of Jaala, the sons of Darkon, the sons of Giddel,

59 s ons of Shephatiah, sons of Hattil, sons of Pochereth of Zebaim, sons of Amon.

the sons of Shephatiah, the sons of Hattil, the sons of Pochereth of Zebaim, the sons of Amon.

60 A ll the Nethinim and the sons of the servants of Solomon three hundred ninety and two.

All the Nethinims, and the sons of Solomon’s slaves, were three hundred and ninety-two.

61 A nd these those coming up from Tel-Melah, Tel-Harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer -- and they have not been able to declare the house of their fathers, and their seed, whether they of Israel --

And these were they which came up also from Telmelah, Telharesha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer; but they could not show their father’s house, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel.

62 s ons of Delaiah, sons of Tobiah, sons of Nekoda, six hundred forty and two.

The sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda, six hundred and forty-two.

63 A nd of the priests: sons of Habaiah sons of Koz, sons of Barzillai, who hath taken from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite a wife, and is called by their name.

And of the priests: the sons of Habaiah, the sons of Koz, the sons of Barzillai, who took one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite to wife, and was called after their name.

64 T hese have sought their register among those reckoning themselves by genealogy, and it hath not been found, and they are redeemed from the priesthood,

These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but it was not found; therefore, were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood.

65 a nd the Tirshatha saith to them that they eat not of the most holy things till the standing up of the priest with Urim and Thummim.

And the Tirshatha said unto them that they should not eat of the most holy things until there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.

66 A ll the assembly together four myriads two thousand three hundred and sixty,

The whole congregation united as one man was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty,

67 a part from their servants and their handmaids -- these seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven; and of them singers and songstresses, two hundred forty and five.

not counting their menslaves and their maidslaves, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and they had two hundred and forty-five men and women singers.

68 T heir horses seven hundred thirty and six; their mules, two hundred forty and five;

Their horses, seven hundred and thirty-six; their mules, two hundred and forty-five:

69 c amels, four hundred thirty and five; asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty.

Their camels, four hundred and thirty-five; their asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty.

70 A nd from the extremity of the heads of the fathers they have given to the work; the Tirshatha hath given to the treasure, of gold, drams a thousand, bowls fifty, priests' coats thirty and five hundred.

And some of the princes of the families gave unto the work. The Tirshatha gave for the treasure one thousand drams of gold, fifty basins, and five hundred and thirty priests’ garments.

71 A nd of the heads of the fathers they have given to the treasure of the work, of gold, drams two myriads, and of silver, pounds two thousand and two hundred.

And the princes of the families gave for the treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold and two thousand two hundred pounds of silver.

72 A nd that which the rest of the people have given of gold, drams two myriads, and of silver, pounds two thousand, and of priests coats, sixty and seven.

And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold and two thousand pounds of silver and sixty-seven priests’ garments.

73 A nd they dwell -- the priests, and the Levites, and the gatekeepers, and the singers, and of the people, and the Nethinim, and all Israel -- in their cities, and the seventh month cometh, and the sons of Israel in their cities.

So the priests and the Levites and the porters and the singers and those of the people and the Nethinims and all Israel dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the sons of Israel were in their cities.
