1 A nd I say, so long time as the heir is a babe, he differeth nothing from a servant -- being lord of all,

¶ Now I say That the heir, as long as he is a child differs in nothing from a slave, though he be lord of all,

2 b ut is under tutors and stewards till the time appointed of the father,

but is under the hand of tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.

3 s o also we, when we were babes, under the elements of the world were in servitude,

Even so we, when we were children, were in slavery under the elements of the world,

4 a nd when the fulness of time did come, God sent forth His Son, come of a woman, come under law,

but when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

5 t hat those under law he may redeem, that the adoption of sons we may receive;

to redeem those that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

6 a nd because ye are sons, God did send forth the spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, `Abba, Father!'

And because ye are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father;

7 s o that thou art no more a servant, but a son, and if a son, also an heir of God through Christ.

therefore, thou art no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

8 B ut then, indeed, not having known God, ye were in servitude to those not by nature gods,

¶ However then, when ye did not know God, ye did service unto those who by nature are not gods.

9 a nd now, having known God -- and rather being known by God -- how turn ye again unto the weak and poor elements to which anew ye desire to be in servitude?

But now, having known God, or rather being known of God, how do ye turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, in which ye desire again to be in slavery?

10 d ays ye observe, and months, and times, and years!

Ye observe days and months and times and years.

11 I am afraid of you, lest in vain I did labour toward you.

I am afraid for you, lest I have bestowed labour upon you in vain.

12 B ecome as I -- because I also as ye brethren, I beseech you; to me ye did no hurt,

¶ Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are; ye have not injured me at all.

13 a nd ye have known that through infirmity of the flesh I did proclaim good news to you at the first,

Ye know how through weakness of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.

14 a nd my trial that in my flesh ye did not despise nor reject, but as a messenger of God ye did receive me -- as Christ Jesus;

And my affliction which was in my flesh ye did not despise, nor reject but ye received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

15 w hat then was your happiness? for I testify to you, that if possible, your eyes having plucked out, ye would have given to me;

Where is then the blessedness ye spoke of? for I bear you record that if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes and have given them to me.

16 s o that your enemy have I become, being true to you?

Am I, therefore, become your enemy because I tell you the truth?

17 t hey are zealous for you -- not well, but they wish to shut us out, that for them ye may be zealous;

¶ They are zealous after you, but not for good; they would exclude you from us, that ye might be zealous after them.

18 a nd good to be zealously regarded, in what is good, at all times, and not only in my being present with you;

It is good to be always zealous to do good, and not only when I am present with you.

19 m y little children, of whom again I travail in birth, till Christ may be formed in you,

¶ My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ is formed in you,

20 a nd I was wishing to be present with you now, and to change my voice, because I am in doubt about you.

I desire to be present with you now and to change my voice, for I stand in doubt of you.

21 T ell me, ye who are willing to be under law, the law do ye not hear?

¶ Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, have ye not heard the law?

22 f or it hath been written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the maid-servant, and one by the free-woman,

For it is written that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

23 b ut he who of the maid-servant, according to flesh hath been, and he who of the free-woman, through the promise;

But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, but he of the freewoman was born through the promise.

24 w hich things are allegorized, for these are the two covenants: one, indeed, from mount Sinai, to servitude bringing forth, which is Hagar;

Which things are an allegory; for these women are the two covenants: the one from the Mount Sinai, which begat unto slavery, which is Hagar.

25 f or this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and doth correspond to the Jerusalem that now, and is in servitude with her children,

For this Hagar or Sinai is a mount in Arabia, which corresponds to the one that is now Jerusalem, which together with her children is in slavery.

26 a nd the Jerusalem above is the free-woman, which is mother of us all,

But the Jerusalem of above is free, which is the mother of us all.

27 f or it hath been written, `Rejoice, O barren, who art not bearing; break forth and cry, thou who art not travailing, because many the children of the desolate -- more than of her having the husband.'

For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth into praise and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate has many more children than she who has a husband.

28 A nd we, brethren, as Isaac, are children of promise,

So that we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

29 b ut as then he who was born according to the flesh did persecute him according to the spirit, so also now;

But as then he that was born according to the flesh persecuted him that was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now.

30 b ut what saith the Writing? `Cast forth the maid-servant and her son, for the son of the maid-servant may not be heir with the son of the free-woman;'

Nevertheless what does the scripture say? Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

31 t hen, brethren, we are not a maid-servant's children, but the free-woman's.

So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
