1 J esus, therefore, six days before the passover, came to Bethany, where was Lazarus, who had died, whom he raised out of the dead;

¶ Jesus, therefore, six days before the passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

2 t hey made, therefore, to him a supper there, and Martha was ministering, and Lazarus was one of those reclining together (at meat) with him;

There they made him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those that sat at the table with him.

3 M ary, therefore, having taken a pound of ointment of spikenard, of great price, anointed the feet of Jesus and did wipe with her hair his feet, and the house was filled from the fragrance of the ointment.

Then Mary took a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

4 T herefore saith one of his disciples -- Judas Iscariot, of Simon, who is about to deliver him up --

Then said one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who should betray him,

5 ` Wherefore was not this ointment sold for three hundred denaries, and given to the poor?'

Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarius and given to the poor?

6 a nd he said this, not because he was caring for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and what things were put in he was carrying.

This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief and had the bag and would take from what was put therein.

7 J esus, therefore, said, `Suffer her; for the day of my embalming she hath kept it,

Therefore Jesus said, Let her alone; against the day of my burying she has kept this;

8 f or the poor ye have always with yourselves, and me ye have not always.'

for the poor ye always have with you, but ye shall not always have me.

9 A great multitude, therefore, of the Jews knew that he is there, and they came, not because of Jesus only, but that Lazarus also they may see, whom he raised out of the dead;

A great multitude of the Jews therefore knew that he was there; and they came not only for Jesus’ sake, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

10 a nd the chief priests took counsel, that also Lazarus they may kill,

So the princes of the priests took counsel that they might also put Lazarus to death

11 b ecause on account of him many of the Jews were going away, and were believing in Jesus.

because by reason of him many of the Jews went away and believed on Jesus.

12 O n the morrow, a great multitude that came to the feast, having heard that Jesus doth come to Jerusalem,

¶ On the next day the multitude that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

13 t ook the branches of the palms, and went forth to meet him, and were crying, `Hosanna, blessed he who is coming in the name of the Lord -- the king of Israel;'

took branches of palm trees and went forth to meet him and cried, Hosanna; Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel.

14 a nd Jesus having found a young ass did sit upon it, according as it is written,

And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat upon it, as it is written,

15 ` Fear not, daughter of Sion, lo, thy king doth come, sitting on an ass' colt.'

Fear not, daughter of Sion; behold, thy King comes, sitting on an ass’s colt.

16 A nd these things his disciples did not know at the first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were having been written about him, and these things they did to him.

His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of him and that they had done these things unto him.

17 T he multitude, therefore, who are with him, were testifying that he called Lazarus out of the tomb, and did raise him out of the dead;

The multitude, therefore, that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave and raised him from the dead, bore witness.

18 b ecause of this also did the multitude meet him, because they heard of his having done this sign,

For this cause the multitude also met him, for they had heard that he had done this sign.

19 t he Pharisees, therefore, said among themselves, `Ye see that ye do not gain anything, lo, the world did go after him.'

The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

20 A nd there were certain Greeks out of those coming up that they may worship in the feast,

¶ And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast;

21 t hese then came near to Philip, who from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were asking him, saying, `Sir, we wish to see Jesus;'

the same came therefore to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, Lord, we desire to see Jesus.

22 P hilip cometh and telleth Andrew, and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

Philip came and told Andrew, and then Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

23 A nd Jesus responded to them, saying, `The hour hath come that the Son of Man may be glorified;

And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour comes in which the Son of man shall be clarified.

24 v erily, verily, I say to you, if the grain of the wheat, having fallen to the earth, may not die, itself remaineth alone; and if it may die, it doth bear much fruit;

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it abides alone; but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit.

25 h e who is loving his life shall lose it, and he who is hating his life in this world -- to life age-during shall keep it;

He that loves his life shall lose it, and he that hates his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

26 i f any one may minister to me, let him follow me, and where I am, there also my ministrant shall be; and if any one may minister to me -- honour him will the Father.

If anyone serves me, let them follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; the one that serves me, will my Father honour.

27 ` Now hath my soul been troubled, and what? shall I say -- Father, save me from this hour? -- but because of this I came to this hour;

¶ Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour, but for this have I come in this hour.

28 F ather, glorify Thy name.' There came, therefore, a voice out of the heaven, `I both glorified, and again I will glorify;'

Father, clarify thy name. Then there came a voice from the heaven, saying, I have clarified it and will clarify it again.

29 t he multitude, therefore, having stood and heard, were saying that there hath been thunder; others said, `A messenger hath spoken to him.'

The people, therefore, that were present and heard it, said that it thundered; others said, An angel spoke to him.

30 J esus answered and said, `Not because of me hath this voice come, but because of you;

Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

31 n ow is a judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast forth;

Now is the judgment of this world; now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

32 a nd I, if I may be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto myself.'

And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

33 A nd this he said signifying by what death he was about to die;

This he said, signifying what death he should die.

34 t he multitude answered him, `We heard out of the law that the Christ doth remain -- to the age; and how dost thou say, That it behoveth the Son of Man to be lifted up? who is this -- the Son of Man?'

The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that the Christ abides for ever; and how sayest thou, It is expedient that the Son of man be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?

35 J esus, therefore, said to them, `Yet a little time is the light with you; walk while ye have the light, that darkness may not overtake you; and he who is walking in the darkness hath not known where he goeth;

Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the Light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you; for he that walks in darkness does not know where he goes.

36 w hile ye have the light, believe in the light, that sons of light ye may become.' These things spake Jesus, and having gone away, he was hid from them,

While ye have the Light, believe in the Light that ye may be the sons of light. Jesus spoke these things and departed and hid himself from them.

37 y et he having done so many signs before them, they were not believing in him,

¶ But although he had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in him,

38 t hat the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said, `Lord, who gave credence to our report? and the arm of the Lord -- to whom was it revealed?'

that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke, Lord, who shall believe our report? and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

39 B ecause of this they were not able to believe, that again Isaiah said,

Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again,

40 ` He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, that they might not see with the eyes, and understand with the heart, and turn back, and I might heal them;'

He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes nor understand with their heart and be converted, and I should heal them.

41 t hese things said Isaiah, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

Isaiah said these things when he saw his glory and spoke of him.

42 S till, however, also out of the rulers did many believe in him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing, that they might not be put out of the synagogue,

¶ Nevertheless, even among the princes many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue;

43 f or they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.

for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.

44 A nd Jesus cried and said, `He who is believing in me, doth not believe in me, but in Him who sent me;

¶ But Jesus cried and said, He that believes in me, believes not in me, but in him that sent me,

45 a nd he who is beholding me, doth behold Him who sent me;

and he that sees me sees him that sent me.

46 I a light to the world have come, that every one who is believing in me -- in the darkness may not remain;

I am come as a light into the world that whosoever believes in me should not abide in darkness.

47 a nd if any one may hear my sayings, and not believe, I -- I do not judge him, for I came not that I might judge the world, but that I might save the world.

And if anyone hears my words and believes not, I judge him not, for I came not to judge the world but to save the world.

48 ` He who is rejecting me, and not receiving my sayings, hath one who is judging him, the word that I spake, that will judge him in the last day,

He that rejects me and does not receive my words has one that judges him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

49 b ecause I spake not from myself, but the Father who sent me, He did give me a command, what I may say, and what I may speak,

For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father who sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say and what I should speak.

50 a nd I have known that His command is life age-during; what, therefore, I speak, according as the Father hath said to me, so I speak.'

And I know that his commandment is eternal life; whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
