1 T here was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil.

2 A nd seven sons and three daughters were born to him.

Người sanh được bảy con trai và ba con gái;

3 A lso, his possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large household, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the East.

có bảy ngàn chiên, ba ngàn lạc đà, năm trăm đôi bò, năm trăm lừa cái, và tôi tớ rất nhiều; người ấy lớn hơn hết trong cả dân Đông phương.

4 A nd his sons would go and feast in their houses, each on his appointed day, and would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

Các con trai người hay đi dự tiệc, đãi thay phiên nhau trong nhà của mỗi người; và sai mời ba chị em gái mình ăn uống chung với mình.

5 S o it was, when the days of feasting had run their course, that Job would send and sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did regularly. Satan Attacks Job’s Character

Xảy khi các ngày yến tiệc xong rồi, Gióp sai người đi dọn các con cái mình cho thanh sạch, thức dậy sớm, dâng của lễ thiêu tùy số nó; vì người nói rằng: Dễ thường các con ta có phạm tội, và trong lòng từ chối Đức Chúa Trời chăng. Gióp hằng làm như vậy.

6 N ow there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.

Vả, một ngày kia các con trai của Đức Chúa Trời đến ra mắt Đức Giê-hô-va, và Sa-tan cũng đến trong vòng chúng.

7 A nd the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

Đức Giê-hô-va phán hỏi Sa-tan rằng: Ngươi ở đâu đến? Sa-tan thưa với Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: Tôi trải qua đây đó trên đất và dạo chơi tại nơi nó.

8 T hen the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?”

Đức Giê-hô-va lại hỏi Sa-tan rằng: Ngươi có nhìn thấy Gióp, tôi tớ của ta chăng; nơi thế gian chẳng có người nào giống như nó, vốn trọn vẹn và ngay thẳng, kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời, và lánh khỏi điều ác?

9 S o Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?

Sa-tan thưa với Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: Gióp há kính sợ Đức Chúa Trời luống công sao?

10 H ave You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

Chúa há chẳng dựng hàng rào binh vực ở bốn phía người, nhà người, và mọi vật thuộc về người sao? Chúa đã ban phước cho công việc của tay người và làm cho của cải người thêm nhiều trên đất.

11 B ut now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!”

Nhưng bây giờ hãy giơ tay Chúa ra Chúa ra, đụng đến hại các vật người có, ắt là người sẽ phỉ báng Chúa trước mặt.

12 A nd the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person. ” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord. Job Loses His Property and Children

Đức Giê-hô-va phán với Sa-tan rằng: Nầy, các vật người có đều phó trong tay người; nhưng chớ tra tay vào mình nó. Sa-tan bèn lui ra khỏi mặt Đức Giê-hô-va.

13 N ow there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house;

Xảy một ngày kia, khi các con trai và con gái người đương ăn và uống rượu trong nhà anh cả chúng nó,

14 a nd a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them,

một sứ giả đến báo tin cho Gióp rằng: Bò đương cày, lừa đương ăn bên cạnh,

15 w hen the Sabeans raided them and took them away—indeed they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

thì dân Sê-ba xông vào chúng nó, đoạt cướp đi, và lấy lưỡi gươm giết các tôi tớ; chỉ một mình tôi thoát khỏi đặng báo tin cho ông.

16 W hile he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Người nầy còn đương nói, thì một người khác đến, báo rằng: Lửa của Đức Chúa Trời từ trên trời giáng xuống thiêu đốt các con chiên và tôi tớ, làm tiêu hủy chúng nó đi; chỉ một mình tôi thoát khỏi đặng báo tin cho ông.

17 W hile he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands, raided the camels and took them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Người nầy còn đương nói, thì một kẻ khác chạy đến, báo rằng: Dân Canh-đê phân làm ba đạo, xông vào lạc đà, cướp đoạt đi, và lấy lưỡi gươm giết các tôi tớ; chỉ một mình tôi thoát khỏi đặng báo tin cho ông.

18 W hile he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,

Người nầy còn đương nói, thì một kẻ khác chạy đến, báo rằng: Các con trai và con gái ông đương ăn uống tại nơi nhà anh cả của họ,

19 a nd suddenly a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

kìa một ngọn gió lớn từ phía bên kia sa mạc thổi đến, làm cho bốn góc nhà rung rinh, nhà sập xuống đè chết các người trẻ tuổi; chỉ một mình tôi thoát khỏi đặng báo tin cho ông.

20 T hen Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped.

Gióp bèn chổi dậy, xé áo mình, và cạo đầu, đoạn xấp mình xuống đất mà thờ lạy,

21 A nd he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

và nói rằng: Tôi trần truồng lọt khỏi lòng mẹ, và tôi cũng sẽ trần truồng mà về; Đức Giê-hô-va đã ban cho, Đức Giê-hô-va lại cất đi; đáng ngợi khen danh Đức Giê-hô-va!

22 I n all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.

Trong mọi sự ấy, Gióp không phạm tội, và chẳng nói phạm thượng cùng Đức Chúa Trời.
