1 T hen the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

2 Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, every male, head by head

3 f rom twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall number them by their armies.

From twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go forth to war you and Aaron shall number, company by company.

4 W ith you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, each one head of his father’s household.

And with you there shall be a man from each tribe, each being the head of his father’s house.

5 T hese then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;

And these are the names of the men who shall attend you: Of Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;

6 o f Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;

Of Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;

7 o f Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab;

Of Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab;

8 o f Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar;

Of Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar;

9 o f Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon;

10 o f the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;

11 o f Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;

13 o f Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran;

14 o f Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;

15 o f Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.

16 T hese are they who were called of the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ tribes; they were the heads of divisions of Israel.”

These were those chosen from the congregation, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, heads of thousands in Israel.

17 S o Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name,

18 a nd they assembled all the congregation together on the first of the second month. Then they registered by ancestry in their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head,

19 j ust as the Lord had commanded Moses. So he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

27 t heir numbered men of the tribe of Judah were 74, 600.

28 O f the sons of Issachar, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,

30 O f the sons of Zebulun, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,

31 t heir numbered men of the tribe of Zebulun were 57, 400.

32 O f the sons of Joseph, namely, of the sons of Ephraim, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,

35 t heir numbered men of the tribe of Manasseh were 32, 200.

36 O f the sons of Benjamin, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,

37 t heir numbered men of the tribe of Benjamin were 35, 400.

38 O f the sons of Dan, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,

39 t heir numbered men of the tribe of Dan were 62, 700.

40 O f the sons of Asher, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,

41 t heir numbered men of the tribe of Asher were 41, 500.

42 O f the sons of Naphtali, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war,

Of the sons of Naphtali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all able to go to war:

43 t heir numbered men of the tribe of Naphtali were 53, 400.

Those of the tribe of Naphtali numbered 53, 400.

44 T hese are the ones who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, with the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each of whom was of his father’s household.

These were numbered by Moses and Aaron, and the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each representing his father’s house.

45 S o all the numbered men of the sons of Israel by their fathers’ households, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war in Israel,

So all those numbered of the Israelites, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, able to go to war in Israel,

46 e ven all the numbered men were 603, 550. Levites Exempted

All who were numbered were 603, 550.

47 T he Levites, however, were not numbered among them by their fathers’ tribe.

But the Levites by their fathers’ tribe were not numbered with them.

48 F or the Lord had spoken to Moses, saying,

For the Lord had said to Moses,

49 Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, nor shall you take their census among the sons of Israel.

Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number in the census of the Israelites.

50 B ut you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it; they shall also camp around the tabernacle.

But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, and over all its vessels and furnishings and all things that belong to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall minister to it and encamp around it.

51 S o when the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle encamps, the Levites shall set it up. But the layman who comes near shall be put to death.

When the tabernacle is to go forward, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And the excluded who approach the tabernacle shall be put to death.

52 T he sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his own camp, and each man by his own standard, according to their armies.

The Israelites shall pitch their tents by their companies, every man by his own camp and every man by his own standard.

53 B ut the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be no wrath on the congregation of the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.”

But the Levites shall encamp around the tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be no wrath upon the congregation of the Israelites; and the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony.

54 T hus the sons of Israel did; according to all which the Lord had commanded Moses, so they did.
