1 J esus came out from the temple and was going away when His disciples came up to point out the temple buildings to Him.

Jesus departed from the temple area and was going on His way when His disciples came up to Him to call His attention to the buildings of the temple and point them out to Him.

2 A nd He said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.”

But He answered them, Do you see all these? Truly I tell you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.

3 A s He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

While He was seated on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately and said, Tell us, when will this take place, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end (the completion, the consummation) of the age?

4 A nd Jesus answered and said to them, “ See to it that no one misleads you.

Jesus answered them, Be careful that no one misleads you.

5 F or many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many.

For many will come in (on the strength of) My name '> appropriating the name which belongs to Me], saying, I am the Christ (the Messiah), and they will lead many astray.

6 Y ou will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end.

And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not frightened or troubled, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.

7 F or nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes.

For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in place after place;

8 B ut all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.

All this is but the beginning of the birth pangs '> intolerable anguish].

9 Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name.

Then they will hand you over to suffer affliction and tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.

10 A t that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another.

And then many will be offended and repelled and will begin to distrust and desert and will stumble and fall away and betray one another and pursue one another with hatred.

11 M any false prophets will arise and will mislead many.

And many false prophets will rise up and deceive and lead many into error.

12 B ecause lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold.

And the love of the great body of people will grow cold because of the multiplied lawlessness and iniquity,

13 B ut the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.

But he who endures to the end will be saved.

14 T his gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come. Perilous Times

And this good news of the kingdom (the Gospel) will be preached throughout the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then will come the end.

15 Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place ( let the reader understand),

So when you see the appalling sacrilege, spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the Holy Place—let the reader take notice and ponder and consider and heed —

16 t hen those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains.

Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains;

17 W hoever is on the housetop must not go down to get the things out that are in his house.

Let him who is on the housetop not come down and go into the house to take anything;

18 W hoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak.

And let him who is in the field not turn back to get his overcoat.

19 B ut woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!

And alas for the women who are pregnant and for those who have nursing babies in those days!

20 B ut pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath.

Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath.

21 F or then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will.

For then there will be great tribulation (affliction, distress, and oppression) such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now—no, and never will be.

22 U nless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.

And if those days had not been shortened, no human being would endure and survive, but for the sake of the elect (God’s chosen ones) those days will be shortened.

23 T hen if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or ‘ There He is,’ do not believe him.

If anyone says to you then, Behold, here is the Christ (the Messiah)! or, There He is!—do not believe it.

24 F or false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.

For false Christs and false prophets will arise, and they will show great signs and wonders so as to deceive and lead astray, if possible, even the elect (God’s chosen ones).

25 B ehold, I have told you in advance.

See, I have warned you beforehand.

26 S o if they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out, or, ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe them.

So if they say to you, Behold, He is in the wilderness (desert)—do not go out there; if they tell you, Behold, He is in the secret places or inner rooms—do not believe it.

27 F or just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.

For just as the lightning flashes from the east and shines and is seen as far as the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.

28 W herever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. The Glorious Return

Wherever there is a fallen body (a corpse), there the vultures (or eagles) will flock together.

29 But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

30 A nd then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.

Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn and beat their breasts and lament in anguish, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

31 A nd He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other. Parable of the Fig Tree

And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect (His chosen ones) from the four winds, from one end of the universe to the other.

32 Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near;

From the fig tree learn this lesson: as soon as its young shoots become soft and tender and it puts out its leaves, you know of a surety that summer is near.

33 s o, you too, when you see all these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door.

So also when you see these signs, all taken together, coming to pass, you may know of a surety that He is near, at the very doors.

34 T ruly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.

Truly I tell you, this generation ( the whole multitude of people living at the same time, in a definite, given period) will not pass away till all these things taken together take place.

35 H eaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

Sky and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

36 But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

37 F or the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.

As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

38 F or as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,

For just as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah went into the ark,

39 a nd they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.

And they did not know or understand until the flood came and swept them all away—so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

40 T hen there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left.

At that time two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left.

41 T wo women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left. Be Ready for His Coming

Two women will be grinding at the hand mill; one will be taken and one will be left.

42 Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.

Watch therefore '> give strict attention, be cautious and active], for you do not know in what kind of a day '> whether a near or remote one] your Lord is coming.

43 B ut be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.

But understand this: had the householder known in what '> night or a morning] watch the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have allowed his house to be undermined and broken into.

44 F or this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.

You also must be ready therefore, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not expect Him.

45 Who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time?

Who then is the faithful, thoughtful, and wise servant, whom his master has put in charge of his household to give to the others the food and supplies at the proper time?

46 B lessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes.

Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) is that servant whom, when his master comes, he will find so doing.

47 T ruly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

I solemnly declare to you, he will set him over all his possessions.

48 B ut if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My master is not coming for a long time,’

But if that servant is wicked and says to himself, My master is delayed and is going to be gone a long time,

49 a nd begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards;

And begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with the drunken,

50 t he master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour which he does not know,

The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour of which he is not aware,

51 a nd will cut him in pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

And will punish him '> cut him up by scourging] and put him with the pretenders (hypocrites); there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.
