1 N ow the whole earth used the same language and the same words.

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ فِي الأرْضِ إلّا لُغَةٌ واحِدَةٌ لَها مُفْرَداتٌ مَحْدُودَةٌ.

2 I t came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.

وَمَعَ ارتِحالِ النّاسِ مِنَ الشَّرْقِ، وَجَدُوا سَهلاً فِي أرْضِ شِنْعارَ. فَاسْتَقَرُّوا هُناكَ.

3 T hey said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.

فاتَّفَقُوا وَقالُوا: «لِنَصْنَعْ لِبْناً وَنَشْوِيهِ جَيِّداً حَتَّى نُقَسِّيهِ.» فَاسْتَخدَمُوا بَدَلَ الحِجارَةِ لِبْناً، وَبَدَلَ الطِّينِ قاراً.

4 T hey said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

ثُمَّ قالُوا: «لِنَبْنِ لَنا مَدِينَةً، وَبُرْجاً تَصِلُ قِمَّتُهُ إلَى السَّماءِ. وَهَكَذا نَكْتَسِبُ شُهْرَةً. وَإلّا، فَإنَّنا سَنَتَشَتَّتُ عَلَى وَجْهِ الأرْضِ.»

5 T he Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.

وَنَزَلَ اللهُ لِيَرَى المَدِينَةَ وَالبُرْجَ اللَّذَينِ بَناهُما النّاسُ.

6 T he Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.

وَقالَ اللهُ: «ها إنَّهُمْ شَعبٌ وَاحِدٌ يَتَكَلَّمُونَ لُغَةً واحِدَةً. وَما هَذِهِ إلّا البِدايَةُ. لا يَصْعُبُ عَلَيهِمْ شَيءٌ يَنْوُونَ عَمَلَهُ.

7 C ome, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”

فَهَيّا نَنْزِلْ وَنُبَلْبِلْ لُغَتَهُمْ، فَلا يَعُودُ بَعْضُهُمْ يَفْهَمُ لُغَةَ بَعْضٍ.»

8 S o the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.

فَشَتَّتَهُمُ اللهُ مِنْ هُناكَ عَلَى سَطْحِ الأرْضِ كُلِّها. فَتَوَقَّفَ بِناءُ المَدِينَةِ.

9 T herefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth. Descendants of Shem

وَلِهَذا سُمِّيَتِ المَدِينَةُ بابِلَ، لأنَّ اللهَ بَلْبَلَ هُناكَ لُغَةَ الأرْضِ كُلِّها. وَمِنْ هُناكَ، شَتَّتَهُمُ اللهُ عَلَى وَجهِ الأرْضِ كُلِّها. تاريخُ عائلةِ سام

10 T hese are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood;

هَذا سِجِلُّ مَوالِيدِ سامَ. عِنْدَما كانَ عُمْرُ سامَ مِئَةَ سَنَةٍ، أنْجَبَ أرْفَكْشادَ. وَكانَ هَذا بَعْدَ سَنَتَينِ مِنَ الطُّوفانِ.

11 a nd Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.

وَعاشَ سامُ خَمْسَ مِئَةِ سَنَةٍ بَعْدَ وِلادَةِ أرْفَكْشادَ. وَقَدْ أنجَبَ بَنِينَ آخَرِينَ وَبَناتٍ.

12 A rpachshad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Shelah;

وَلَمّا بَلَغَ أرْفَكْشادُ خَمْساً وَثَلاثِينَ سَنَةً أنجَبَ شالَحَ.

13 a nd Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.

وَعاشَ أرْفَكْشادُ بَعْدَ وِلادَةِ شالَحَ أرْبَعَ مِئَةٍ وَثَلاثَ سِنِينَ أنجَبَ خِلالَها بَنِينَ آخَرِينَ وَبَناتٍ.

14 S helah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber;

وَلَمّا بَلَغَ شالَحُ ثَلاثِينَ سَنَةً، أنْجَبَ عابِرَ.

15 a nd Shelah lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.

وَعاشَ شالَحُ بَعْدَ مَولِدِ عابِرَ أرْبَعَ مِئَةٍ وَثَلاثَ سِنِينَ أنجَبَ خِلالَها بَنِينَ آخَرِينَ وَبَناتٍ.

16 E ber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg;

وَلَمّا بَلَغَ عابِرُ أرْبَعاً وَثَلاثِينَ سَنَةً، أنْجَبَ فالَجَ.

17 a nd Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.

وَعاشَ عابِرُ بَعْدَ مَولِدِ فالَجَ أرْبَعَ مِئَةٍ وَثَلاثِينَ سَنَةً أنْجَبَ خِلالَها بَنِينَ آخَرِينَ وَبَناتٍ.

18 P eleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu;

وَلَمّا بَلَغَ فالَجُ ثَلاثِينَ سَنَةً، أنْجَبَ رَعُواً.

19 a nd Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he became the father of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.

وَعاشَ فالَجُ بَعْدَ مَولِدِ رَعُوٍ مِئَتَينِ وَتِسْعَ سِنِينَ أنجَبَ خِلالَها بَنِينَ آخَرِينَ وَبَناتٍ.

20 R eu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug;

وَلَمّا بَلَغَ رَعُوٌ اثْنَتَينِ وَثَلاثِينَ سَنَةً، أنْجَبَ سَرُوجَ.

21 a nd Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he became the father of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.

وَعاشَ رَعُوٌ بَعْدَ مَولِدِ سَرُوجَ مِئَتَينِ وَسَبْعَ سِنِينَ أنْجَبَ خِلالَها بَنِينَ آخَرِينَ وَبَناتٍ.

22 S erug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor;

وَلَمّا بَلَغَ سَرُوجُ ثَلاثِينَ سَنَةً، أنْجَبَ ناحُورَ.

23 a nd Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.

وَعاشَ سَرُوجُ بَعْدَ مَولِدِ ناحُورَ مِئَتَي سَنَةٍ أنْجَبَ خِلالَها بَنِينَ آخَرِينَ وَبَناتٍ.

24 N ahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terah;

وَلَمّا بَلَغَ ناحُورُ تِسْعاً وَعِشْرِينَ سَنَةً، أنْجَبَ تارَحَ.

25 a nd Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.

وَعاشَ ناحُورُ بَعْدَ مَولِدِ تارَحَ مِئَةً وَتِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً، أنجَبَ خِلالَها بَنِينَ آخَرِينَ وَبَناتٍ.

26 T erah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.

وَلَمّا بَلَغَ تارَحُ سَبْعِينَ سَنَةً، أنْجَبَ أبْرامَ وَناحُورَ وَهارانَ. تاريخُ عائلةِ تارَح

27 N ow these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran; and Haran became the father of Lot.

هَذا سِجِلُّ مَوالِيدِ عائِلَةِ تارَحَ. أنْجَبَ تارَحُ أبْرامَ وَناحُورَ وَهارانَ. وَأنْجَبَ هارانُ لُوطَ.

28 H aran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.

وَماتَ هارانُ قَبلَ أبِيهِ تارَحَ فِي أرْضِ مَولِدِهِ – فِي أُورِ الكِلْدانِيِّينَ.

29 A bram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.

وَتَزَوَّجَ كُلٌّ مِنْ أبْرامَ وَناحُورَ. وَكانَ اسْمُ زَوْجَةِ أبْرامَ سارايَ. وَكانَ اسْمُ زَوْجَةِ ناحُورَ مِلْكَةَ. وَكانَتْ مِلْكَةُ ابْنَةَ هارانَ. وَكانَ هارانُ قَدْ أنْجَبَ مِلْكَةَ وَيِسْكَةَ.

30 S arai was barren; she had no child.

وَكانَتْ سارايُ عاقِراً وَلَيسَ لَها ابْنٌ.

31 T erah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there.

وَأخَذَ تارَحُ ابْنَهُ أبْرامَ، وَحَفِيدَهُ لُوطَ، ابْنَ ابْنِهِ هارانَ، وَكَنَّتَهُ سارايَ، زَوْجَةَ ابْنِهِ أبْرامَ، وَتَرَكُوا أُورَ الكِلْدانِيِّينَ لِيَتَّجِهُوا إلَى أرْضِ كَنْعانَ. لَكِنَّهُمْ لَمّا وَصَلُوا حارانَ، اسْتَقَرُّوا هُناكَ.

32 T he days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.

وَعاشَ تارَحُ مِئَتَينِ وَخَمْسَ سَنَواتٍ. ثُمَّ ماتَ فِي حارانَ.
