1 N ow the whole earth used the same language and the same words.
And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
2 I t came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
3 T hey said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.
And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
4 T hey said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
5 T he Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
6 T he Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.
And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
7 C ome, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
8 S o the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.
So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
9 T herefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth. Descendants of Shem
Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
10 T hese are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood;

11 a nd Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.
And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
12 A rpachshad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Shelah;
And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah:
13 a nd Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.
And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
14 S helah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber;
And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber:
15 a nd Shelah lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.
And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
16 E ber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg;
And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg:
17 a nd Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.
And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.
18 P eleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu;
And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu:
19 a nd Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he became the father of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.
And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.
20 R eu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug;
And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug:
21 a nd Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he became the father of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.
And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.
22 S erug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor;
And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor:
23 a nd Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.
And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
24 N ahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of Terah;
And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah:
25 a nd Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.
And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters.
26 T erah lived seventy years, and became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.
And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27 N ow these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran; and Haran became the father of Lot.
Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.
28 H aran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.
29 A bram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.
And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.
30 S arai was barren; she had no child.
But Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31 T erah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there.
And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
32 T he days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.
