1 T he proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish son is a grief to his mother.

The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

2 I ll-gotten gains do not profit, But righteousness delivers from death.

Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.

3 T he Lord will not allow the righteous to hunger, But He will reject the craving of the wicked.

The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

4 P oor is he who works with a negligent hand, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.

He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

5 H e who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely, But he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully.

He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

6 B lessings are on the head of the righteous, But the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

7 T he memory of the righteous is blessed, But the name of the wicked will rot.

The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

8 T he wise of heart will receive commands, But a babbling fool will be ruined.

The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

9 H e who walks in integrity walks securely, But he who perverts his ways will be found out.

He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.

10 H e who winks the eye causes trouble, And a babbling fool will be ruined.

He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.

11 T he mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, But the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

12 H atred stirs up strife, But love covers all transgressions.

Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

13 O n the lips of the discerning, wisdom is found, But a rod is for the back of him who lacks understanding.

In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

14 W ise men store up knowledge, But with the mouth of the foolish, ruin is at hand.

Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

15 T he rich man’s wealth is his fortress, The ruin of the poor is their poverty.

The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

16 T he wages of the righteous is life, The income of the wicked, punishment.

The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.

17 H e is on the path of life who heeds instruction, But he who ignores reproof goes astray.

He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.

18 H e who conceals hatred has lying lips, And he who spreads slander is a fool.

He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

19 W hen there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, But he who restrains his lips is wise.

In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

20 T he tongue of the righteous is as choice silver, The heart of the wicked is worth little.

The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.

21 T he lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of understanding.

The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.

22 I t is the blessing of the Lord that makes rich, And He adds no sorrow to it.

The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

23 D oing wickedness is like sport to a fool, And so is wisdom to a man of understanding.

It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.

24 W hat the wicked fears will come upon him, But the desire of the righteous will be granted.

The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.

25 W hen the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more, But the righteous has an everlasting foundation.

As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

26 L ike vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, So is the lazy one to those who send him.

As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.

27 T he fear of the Lord prolongs life, But the years of the wicked will be shortened.

The fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

28 T he hope of the righteous is gladness, But the expectation of the wicked perishes.

The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.

29 T he way of the Lord is a stronghold to the upright, But ruin to the workers of iniquity.

The way of the Lord is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

30 T he righteous will never be shaken, But the wicked will not dwell in the land.

The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.

31 T he mouth of the righteous flows with wisdom, But the perverted tongue will be cut out.

The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

32 T he lips of the righteous bring forth what is acceptable, But the mouth of the wicked what is perverted.

The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.
