1 N ow concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies.

أمّا فِي ما يَتَعَلَّقُ بِالذَّبائِحِ المُقَدَّمَةِ لِلأوثانِ، فَصَحِيحٌ قُولُكُمْ: «كُلُّنا نَعْرِفُ!» لَكِنَّ المَعْرِفَةَ تَنفُخُ النّاسَ بِالكِبرِياءِ، أمّا المَحَبَّةُ فَتَبنِيهِمْ.

2 I f anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know;

فَإنْ ظَنَّ أحَدُهُمْ أنَّهُ يَعْرِفُ، فَإنَّهُ لا يَعْرِفُ كَما يَنبَغِي.

3 b ut if anyone loves God, he is known by Him.

لَكِنْ مَنْ يُحِبُّ اللهَ، فَإنَّهُ يَكُونُ مَعرُوفاً مِنَ اللهِ.

4 T herefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one.

فَفِي ما يَتَعَلَّقُ بِأكلِ لَحمِ الذَّبائِحِ المُقَدَّمَةِ لِلأوثانِ، نَعْرِفُ أنَّهُ لا يُوجَدُ وَثَنٌ حَقِيقِيٌّ فِي العالَمِ، وَأنَّهُ لا إلَهَ آخَرَ إلّا اللهُ وَحدَهُ.

5 F or even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords,

نَعْرِفُ أنَّ هُناكَ ما يُسَمَّى «آلِهَةً،» سَواءٌ أفِي السَّماءِ أمْ عَلَى الأرْضِ، وَأنَّ هُناكَ «آلِهَةً» كَثِيرِينَ وَ«أرباباً» كَثِيرِيْنَ.

6 y et for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.

أمّا بِالنِّسبَةِ لَنا، فَلا يُوجَدُ إلّا إلَهٌ واحِدٌ هُوَ الآبُ، الَّذِي مِنهُ تَأتِي كُلُّ الأشياءِ وَلَهُ نَحيا. وَلا يُوجَدُ إلّا رَبٌّ واحِدٌ، هُوَ يَسُوعُ المَسِيحُ الَّذِي بِهِ تُوجَدُ كُلُّ الأشياءِ وَبِهِ نَحيا.

7 H owever not all men have this knowledge; but some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

لَكِنْ لا يعرِفُ الجَمِيعُ هَذِهِ الحَقيقةَ. فَبَعضُ النّاسِ كانوا قَدِ اعْتادُوا عَلَى عِبادَةِ الأوثانِ، فَعِنْدَما يَأكُلُونَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ اللَّحمِ مُعتَقِدِينَ أنَّهُ ذُبِحَ لِوَثَنٍ، يَشعُرُونَ بِالذَّنبِ لِأنَّ ضَمِيرَهُمْ ضَعِيفٌ.

8 B ut food will not commend us to God; we are neither the worse if we do not eat, nor the better if we do eat.

غَيرَ أنَّ الطَّعامَ لا يُقَرِّبُنا مِنَ اللهِ. فَنَحنُ لا نَصِيرُ أسوَأ إنْ لَمْ نَأْكُلَ، وَلا نَكُونُ أًفضَلَ إنْ أكَلنا.

9 B ut take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.

لَكِنِ انتَبِهُوا لِئَلّا يَصِيرَ حَقُّكُمْ فِي تَناوُلِ مِثلِ هَذِهِ الأطعِمَةِ سَبَباً فِي تَعَثُّرِ الضُّعَفاءِ.

10 F or if someone sees you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols?

فَيا صاحِبَ المَعْرِفَةِ، ماذا لَو رَآكَ أحَدٌ ذُو ضَمِيرٍ ضَعِيفٍ تَجلِسُ وَتَأكُلُ فِي مَعبَدٍ لِلأوثانِ، ألا يَتَشَجَّعُ ضَمِيرُهُ فَيَأكُلَ مِنَ الأطعِمَةِ المُقَدَّمَةِ لِلأوثانِ؟

11 F or through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined, the brother for whose sake Christ died.

وَهَكَذا تُؤدِّي مَعرِفَتُكَ إلَى تَدمِيرِ هَذا المُؤمِنِ، وَهُوَ أخُوكَ الَّذِي ماتَ المَسِيحُ مِنْ أجلِهِ!

12 A nd so, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.

وَإذْ تُخطِئونَ فِي حَقِّ إخْوَتِكُمْ وَتَجرَحُونَ ضَمِيرَهُمُ الضَّعِيفَ، فإنَّكُمْ تُخطِئونَ إلَى المَسِيحِ نَفسِهِ.

13 T herefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to stumble.

فَإنْ كانَ الطَّعامُ يَتَسَبَّبُ فِي أنْ يُخطِئَ أخِي، فَلَنْ آكُلَ لَحماً مَرَّةً أُخْرَى لِئلّا يُخطِئَ أخِي.
