1 J esus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness

2 f or forty days, being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing in those days. Afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry.

3 T he devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”

And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

4 J esus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’”

And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘ Man shall not live on bread alone.’”

5 T he devil, leading him up on a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

6 T he devil said to him, “I will give you all this authority, and their glory, for it has been delivered to me; and I give it to whomever I want.

And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.

7 I f you therefore will worship before me, it will all be yours.”

Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.”

8 J esus answered him, “Get behind me Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’”

Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘ You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”

9 H e led him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here,

And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here;

10 f or it is written, ‘He will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you;’

for it is written, ‘ He will command His angels concerning You to guard You,’

11 a nd, ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest perhaps you dash your foot against a stone.’”

and, ‘ On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

12 J esus answering, said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”

And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is said, ‘ You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

13 W hen the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until another time.

When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time. Jesus’ Public Ministry

14 J esus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and news about him spread through all the surrounding area.

15 H e taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.

16 H e came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.

20 H e closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21 H e began to tell them, “Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

22 A ll testified about him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth, and they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, “ Is this not Joseph’s son?”

23 H e said to them, “Doubtless you will tell me this parable, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.’”

And He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard was done at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’”

24 H e said, “Most certainly I tell you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.

And He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.

25 B ut truly I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land.

28 T hey were all filled with wrath in the synagogue, as they heard these things.

And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things;

29 T hey rose up, threw him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill that their city was built on, that they might throw him off the cliff.

and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff.

30 B ut he, passing through the middle of them, went his way.

But passing through their midst, He went His way.

31 H e came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. He was teaching them on the Sabbath day,

33 I n the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,

34 s aying, “Ah! what have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are: the Holy One of God!”

“Let us alone! What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are— the Holy One of God!”

35 J esus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” When the demon had thrown him down in the middle of them, he came out of him, having done him no harm.

But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, he came out of him without doing him any harm.

36 A mazement came on all, and they spoke together, one with another, saying, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”

And amazement came upon them all, and they began talking with one another saying, “What is this message? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits and they come out.”

37 N ews about him went out into every place of the surrounding region.

And the report about Him was spreading into every locality in the surrounding district. Many Are Healed

38 H e rose up from the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a great fever, and they begged him for her.

Then He got up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him to help her.

39 H e stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her. Immediately she rose up and served them.

And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and waited on them.

40 W hen the sun was setting, all those who had any sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.

While the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them.

41 D emons also came out of many, crying out, and saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” Rebuking them, he didn’t allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But rebuking them, He would not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.

42 W hen it was day, he departed and went into an uninhabited place, and the multitudes looked for him, and came to him, and held on to him, so that he wouldn’t go away from them.

When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them.

43 B ut he said to them, “I must preach the good news of God’s Kingdom to the other cities also. For this reason I have been sent.”

But He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.”

44 H e was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

So He kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
