1 W hen the king lived in his house, and Yahweh had given him rest from all his enemies all around,

Now it came about when the king lived in his house, and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies,

2 t he king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but God’s ark dwells within curtains.”

that the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within tent curtains.”

3 N athan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart; for Yahweh is with you.”

Nathan said to the king, “ Go, do all that is in your mind, for the Lord is with you.”

4 T hat same night, Yahweh’s word came to Nathan, saying,

But in the same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying,

5 Go and tell my servant David, ‘Yahweh says, “Should you build me a house for me to dwell in?

“Go and say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord, “ Are you the one who should build Me a house to dwell in?

6 F or I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought the children of Israel up out of Egypt, even to this day, but have moved around in a tent and in a tabernacle.

For I have not dwelt in a house since the day I brought up the sons of Israel from Egypt, even to this day; but I have been moving about in a tent, even in a tabernacle.

7 I n all places in which I have walked with all the children of Israel, did I say a word to any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’”’

Wherever I have gone with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, which I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’”’ God’s Covenant with David

8 N ow therefore tell my servant David this, ‘Yahweh of Armies says, “I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people, over Israel.

“Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “ I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel.

9 I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you. I will make you a great name, like the name of the great ones who are in the earth.

I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth.

10 I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more. The children of wickedness will not afflict them any more, as at the first,

I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, nor will the wicked afflict them any more as formerly,

11 a nd as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. I will cause you to rest from all your enemies. Moreover Yahweh tells you that Yahweh will make you a house.

even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. The Lord also declares to you that the Lord will make a house for you.

12 W hen your days are fulfilled, and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your offspring after you, who will proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom.

When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom.

13 H e will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men;

I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men,

15 b ut my loving kindness will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you.

but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.

16 Y our house and your kingdom will be made sure forever before you. Your throne will be established forever.”’”

Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’”

17 N athan spoke to David all these words, and according to all this vision.

In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David. David’s Prayer

18 T hen David the king went in, and sat before Yahweh; and he said, “Who am I, Lord Yahweh, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far?

Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord, and he said, “ Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?

19 T his was yet a small thing in your eyes, Lord Yahweh; but you have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come; and this among men, Lord Yahweh!

And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord God, for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And this is the custom of man, O Lord God.

20 W hat more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Lord Yahweh.

Again what more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord God!

21 F or your word’s sake, and according to your own heart, you have worked all this greatness, to make your servant know it.

For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know.

22 T herefore you are great, Yahweh God. For there is no one like you, neither is there any God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

For this reason You are great, O Lord God; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

23 W hat one nation in the earth is like your people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem to himself for a people, and to make himself a name, and to do great things for you, and awesome things for your land, before your people, whom you redeemed to yourself out of Egypt, from the nations and their gods?

And what one nation on the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people and to make a name for Himself, and to do a great thing for You and awesome things for Your land, before Your people whom You have redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, from nations and their gods?

24 Y ou established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever; and you, Yahweh, became their God.

For You have established for Yourself Your people Israel as Your own people forever, and You, O Lord, have become their God.

25 N ow, Yahweh God, the word that you have spoken concerning your servant, and concerning his house, confirm it forever, and do as you have spoken.

Now therefore, O Lord God, the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house, confirm it forever, and do as You have spoken,

26 L et your name be magnified forever, saying, ‘Yahweh of Armies is God over Israel; and the house of your servant David will be established before you.’

that Your name may be magnified forever, by saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel’; and may the house of Your servant David be established before You.

27 F or you, Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, have revealed to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found in his heart to pray this prayer to you.

For You, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have made a revelation to Your servant, saying, ‘ I will build you a house’; therefore Your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to You.

28 Now, O Lord Yahweh, you are God, and your words are truth, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.

Now, O Lord God, You are God, and Your words are truth, and You have promised this good thing to Your servant.

29 N ow therefore let it please you to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you; for you, Lord Yahweh, have spoken it. Let the house of your servant be blessed forever with your blessing.”

Now therefore, may it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You. For You, O Lord God, have spoken; and with Your blessing may the house of Your servant be blessed forever.”
