1 T hese are the words of the agreement the Lord told Moses to make with the people of Israel in the land of Moab, as well as the agreement He had made with them at Mount Sinai.

These the words of the covenant which Jehovah hath commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, apart from the covenant which He made with them in Horeb.

2 M oses called all Israel and said to them, “You have seen all the Lord did in front of you in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and all his servants and all his land.

And Moses calleth unto all Israel, and saith unto them, `Ye -- ye have seen all that which Jehovah hath done before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land;

3 Y ou have seen great tests and powerful works.

the great trials which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great wonders;

4 Y et to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to know, or eyes to see, or ears to hear.

and Jehovah hath not given to you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, till this day,

5 I have led you forty years in the desert. Your clothes did not wear out. And your shoes did not wear out on your feet.

and I cause you to go forty years in a wilderness; your garments have not been consumed from off you, and thy shoe hath not worn away from off thy foot;

6 Y ou did not eat bread, or drink wine or strong drink, so you might know that I am the Lord your God.

bread ye have not eaten, and wine and strong drink ye have not drunk, so that ye know that I Jehovah your God.

7 W hen you came to this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan came to meet us to fight. But we won the fight.

`And ye come in unto this place, and Sihon king of Heshbon -- also Og king of Bashan -- doth come out to meet us, to battle, and we smite them,

8 W e took their land and gave it as a gift to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half family group of Manasseh.

and take their land, and give it for an inheritance to the Reubenite, and to the Gadite, and to the half of the tribe of Manasseh;

9 S o be careful to keep the words of this agreement and obey them so all that you do will go well.

and ye have kept the words of this covenant, and done them, so that ye cause all that ye do to prosper.

10 Today you all stand before the Lord your God, you, your rulers, your families, your leaders, all the men of Israel,

`Ye are standing to-day, all of you, before Jehovah your God -- your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your authorities -- every man of Israel;

11 y our children, your wives, the stranger who is among your tents, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who gets your water.

your infants, your wives, and thy sojourner who in the midst of thy camps, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water --

12 Y ou are here to take part in the agreement with the Lord your God, and in His promise which the Lord your God is making with you today.

for thy passing over into the covenant of Jehovah thy God, and into His oath which Jehovah thy God is making with thee to-day;

13 S o today He will make you His people. He will be your God, just as He told you and as He promised your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

in order to establish thee to-day to Him for a people, and He Himself is thy God, as He hath spoken to thee, and as He hath sworn to thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

14 I am not making this agreement and this promise with you alone.

`And not with you alone am I making this covenant and this oath;

15 I am making them with those who stand here with us today before the Lord our God, and with those who are not here with us today.

but with him who is here with us, standing to-day before Jehovah our God, and with him who is not here with us to-day,

16 Y ou know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we passed through the land of the nations on our way here.

for ye have known how ye dwelt in the land of Egypt, and how we passed by through the midst of the nations which ye have passed by;

17 Y ou have seen their sinful things and their gods of wood, stone, silver and gold, which they had with them.

and ye see their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which with them,

18 B e careful not to have any man or woman or family or group among you whose heart turns away from the Lord our God today to go and worship the gods of those nations. Do not let there be a root among you giving poison fruit and bad-tasting plants.

lest there be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart is turning to-day from Jehovah our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations, lest there be in you a root fruitful of gall and wormwood:

19 W hen one hears the words of this curse, he will say in his pride, ‘I have peace even though I am strong-willed in my heart.’ This will destroy the land that is watered along with the dry land.

`And it hath been, in his hearing the words of this oath, and he hath blessed himself in his heart, saying, I have peace, though in the stubbornness of my heart I go on, in order to end the fulness with the thirst.

20 T he Lord will never be willing to forgive him. But the Lord will be jealous and His anger will burn against that man. Every curse written in this book will be upon him. And the Lord will take out his name from under heaven.

Jehovah is not willing to be propitious to him, for then doth the anger of Jehovah smoke, also His zeal, against that man, and lain down on him hath all the oath which is written in this book, and Jehovah hath blotted out his name from under the heavens,

21 T he Lord will set him apart for trouble from all the families of Israel, with all the curses of the agreement which are written in this book of the Law.

and Jehovah hath separated him for evil, out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the oaths of the covenant which is written in this book of the law.

22 The children to come, your sons who grow up after you, and the stranger who comes from a land far away, will see the troubles and diseases the Lord has sent upon the land. And they will say,

`And the latter generation of your sons who rise after you, and the stranger who cometh in from a land afar off, have said when they have seen the strokes of that land, and its sicknesses which Jehovah hath sent into it, --

23 The whole land is sulphur and salt, a burning waste, not planted and not giving any plants, and no grass grows in it. It is like Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord destroyed in His anger.’

( brimstone and salt is the whole land burnt, it is not sown, nor doth it shoot up, nor doth there go up on it any herb, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim, which Jehovah overturned in His anger, and in His fury,) --

24 A ll the nations will say, ‘Why has the Lord done this to this land? Why was He so angry?’

yea, all the nations have said, Wherefore hath Jehovah done thus to this land? what the heat of this great anger?

25 T hen men will say, ‘It is because they did not keep the agreement of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.

`And they have said, Because that they have forsaken the covenant of Jehovah, God of their fathers, which He made with them in His bringing them out of the land of Egypt,

26 T hey went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods they had not known and whom He had not given to them.

and they go and serve other gods, and bow themselves to them -- gods which they have not known, and which He hath not apportioned to them;

27 S o the anger of the Lord burned against that land. Every curse was brought upon it that is written in this book.

and the anger of Jehovah burneth against that land, to bring in on it all the reviling that is written in this book,

28 T he Lord drove them from their land in much anger. And He sent them into another land, as it is today.’

and Jehovah doth pluck them from off their ground in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath, and doth cast them unto another land, as this day.

29 The secret things belong to the Lord our God. But the things that are made known belong to us and to our children forever, so we may obey all the words of this Law.

`The things hidden to Jehovah our God, and the things revealed to us and to our sons -- to the age, to do all the words of this law.
