1 W enn du sitzest und issest mit einem Herrn, so merke, wen du vor dir hast,

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

2 u nd setze ein Messer an deine Kehle, wenn du gierig bist.

And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

3 W ünsche dir nichts von seinen feinen Speisen; denn es ist falsches Brot.

Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

4 B emühe dich nicht reich zu werden und laß ab von deinen Fündlein.

Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

5 L aß dein Augen nicht fliegen nach dem, was du nicht haben kannst; denn dasselbe macht sich Flügel wie ein Adler und fliegt gen Himmel.

Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

6 I ß nicht Brot bei einem Neidischen und wünsche dir von seinen feinen Speisen nichts.

Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

7 D enn wie ein Gespenst ist er inwendig; er spricht: Iß und trink! und sein Herz ist doch nicht mit dir.

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

8 D eine Bissen die du gegessen hattest, mußt du ausspeien, und mußt deine freundlichen Worte verloren haben.

The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

9 R ede nicht vor des Narren Ohren; denn er verachtet die Klugheit deiner Rede.

Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

10 V errücke nicht die vorigen Grenzen und gehe nicht auf der Waisen Acker.

Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

11 D enn ihr Erlöser ist mächtig; der wird ihre Sache wider dich ausführen.

For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

12 G ib dein Herz zur Zucht und deine Ohren zu vernünftiger Rede.

Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

13 L aß nicht ab den Knaben zu züchtigen; denn wenn du ihn mit der Rute haust, so wird man ihn nicht töten.

Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

14 D u haust ihn mit der Rute; aber du errettest seine Seele vom Tode.

Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

15 M ein Sohn, wenn dein Herz weise ist, so freut sich auch mein Herz;

My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

16 u nd meine Nieren sind froh, wenn deine Lippen reden, was recht ist.

Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

17 D ein Herz folge nicht den Sündern, sondern sei täglich in der Furcht des HERRN.

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long.

18 D enn es wird dir hernach gut sein, und dein Warten wird nicht trügen.

For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

19 H öre, mein Sohn, und sei weise und richte dein Herz in den Weg.

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

20 S ei nicht unter den Säufern und Schlemmern;

Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

21 d enn die Säufer und Schlemmer verarmen, und ein Schläfer muß zerrissene Kleider tragen.

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

22 G ehorche deinem Vater, der dich gezeugt hat, und verachte deine Mutter nicht, wenn sie alt wird.

Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

23 K aufe Wahrheit, und verkaufe sie nicht, Weisheit, Zucht und Verstand.

Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

24 D er Vater eines Gerechten freut sich; und wer einen Weisen gezeugt hat, ist fröhlich darüber.

The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

25 L aß sich deinen Vater und deine Mutter freuen, und fröhlich sein, die dich geboren hat.

Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

26 G ib mir, mein Sohn, dein Herz, und laß deinen Augen meine Wege wohl gefallen.

My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

27 D enn eine Hure ist eine tiefe Grube, und eine Ehebrecherin ist ein enger Brunnen.

For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

28 A uch lauert sie wie ein Räuber, und die Frechen unter den Menschen sammelt sie zu sich.

She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

29 W o ist Weh? wo ist Leid? wo ist Zank? wo ist Klagen? wo sind Wunden ohne Ursache? wo sind trübe Augen?

Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

30 W o man beim Wein liegt und kommt, auszusaufen, was eingeschenkt ist.

They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

31 S iehe den Wein nicht an, daß er so rot ist und im Glase so schön steht. Er geht glatt ein;

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

32 a ber danach beißt er wie eine Schlange und sticht wie eine Otter.

At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

33 S o werden deine Augen nach andern Weibern sehen, und dein Herz wird verkehrte Dinge reden,

Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

34 u nd wirst sein wie einer, der mitten im Meer schläft, und wie einer schläft oben auf dem Mastbaum.

Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

35 " Sie schlagen mich, aber es tut mir nicht weh; sie klopfen mich, aber ich fühle es nicht. Wann will ich aufwachen, daß ich's mehr treibe?"

They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
