Ephesians 5 ~ Ephesians 5

picture

1 T herefore be imitators of God, as well-beloved children.

Be ye therefore imitators of God, as beloved children,

2 A nd walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a slain offering and sacrifice to God a sweet fragrance.

and walk in love, even as the Christ loved us, and delivered himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour.

3 B ut immorality (sexual vice) and all impurity '> of lustful, rich, wasteful living] or greediness must not even be named among you, as is fitting and proper among saints (God’s consecrated people).

But fornication and all uncleanness or unbridled lust, let it not be even named among you, as it becomes saints;

4 L et there be no filthiness (obscenity, indecency) nor foolish and sinful (silly and corrupt) talk, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting or becoming; but instead voice your thankfulness.

and filthiness and foolish talking, or jesting, which are not convenient; but rather thanksgiving.

5 F or be sure of this: that no person practicing sexual vice or impurity in thought or in life, or one who is covetous —for he is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

For this ye are informed of, knowing that no fornicator, or unclean person, or person of unbridled lust, who is an idolater, has inheritance in the kingdom of the Christ and God.

6 L et no one delude and deceive you with empty excuses and groundless arguments, for through these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of rebellion and disobedience.

Let no one deceive you with vain words, for on account of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

7 S o do not associate or be sharers with them.

Be not ye therefore fellow-partakers with them;

8 F or once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of Light.

for ye were once darkness, but now light in Lord; walk as children of light,

9 F or the fruit (the effect, the product) of the Light or the Spirit in every form of kindly goodness, uprightness of heart, and trueness of life.

(for the fruit of the light in all goodness and righteousness and truth,)

10 A nd try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

proving what is agreeable to the Lord;

11 T ake no part in and have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds and enterprises of darkness, but instead expose and reprove and convict them.

and do not have fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather also reprove,

12 F or it is a shame even to speak of or mention the things that practice in secret.

for the things that are done by them in secret it is shameful even to say.

13 B ut when anything is exposed and reproved by the light, it is made visible and clear; and where everything is visible and clear there is light.

But all things having their true character exposed by the light are made manifest; for that which makes everything manifest is light.

14 T herefore He says, Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine (make day dawn) upon you and give you light.

Wherefore he says, Wake up, that sleepest, and arise up from among the dead, and the Christ shall shine upon thee.

15 L ook carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people),

See therefore how ye walk carefully, not as unwise but as wise,

16 M aking the very most of the time, because the days are evil.

redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

17 T herefore do not be vague and thoughtless and foolish, but understanding and firmly grasping what the will of the Lord is.

For this reason be not foolish, but understanding what the will of the Lord.

18 A nd do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but ever be filled and stimulated with the Spirit.

And be not drunk with wine, in which is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit,

19 S peak out to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, offering praise with voices '> and instruments] and making melody with all your heart to the Lord,

speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and chanting with your heart to the Lord;

20 A t all times and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

giving thanks at all times for all things to him God and Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

21 B e subject to one another out of reverence for Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

submitting yourselves to one another in fear of Christ.

22 W ives, be subject (be submissive and adapt yourselves) to your own husbands as to the Lord.

Wives, to your own husbands, as to the Lord,

23 F or the husband is head of the wife as Christ is the Head of the church, Himself the Savior of body.

for a husband is head of the wife, as also the Christ head of the assembly. He Saviour of the body.

24 A s the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands.

But even as the assembly is subjected to the Christ, so also wives to their own husbands in everything.

25 H usbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

Husbands, love your own wives, even as the Christ also loved the assembly, and has delivered himself up for it,

26 S o that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word,

in order that he might sanctify it, purifying by the washing of water by word,

27 T hat He might present the church to Himself in glorious splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such things.

that he might present the assembly to himself glorious, having no spot, or wrinkle, or any of such things; but that it might be holy and blameless.

28 E ven so husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.

So ought men also to love their own wives as their own bodies: he that loves his own wife loves himself.

29 F or no man ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and carefully protects and cherishes it, as Christ does the church,

For no one has ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, even as also the Christ the assembly:

30 B ecause we are members (parts) of His body.

for we are members of his body;

31 F or this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.

Because of this a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall be united to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh.

32 T his mystery is very great, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

This mystery is great, but I speak as to Christ, and as to the assembly.

33 H owever, let each man of you love his wife as his very own self; and let the wife see that she respects and reverences her husband '> that she notices him, regards him, honors him, prefers him, venerates, and esteems him; and that she defers to him, praises him, and loves and admires him exceedingly].

But ye also, every one of you, let each so love his own wife as himself; but as to the wife that she may fear the husband.
