1 T hen Jesus was led (guided) by the Spirit into the wilderness (desert) to be tempted (tested and tried) by the devil.

Then Jesus was carried up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted of the devil:

2 A nd He went without food for forty days and forty nights, and later He was hungry.

and having fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he hungered.

3 A nd the tempter came and said to Him, If You are God’s Son, command these stones to be made '> loaves of] bread.

And the tempter coming up to him said, If thou be Son of God, speak, that these stones may become loaves of bread.

4 B ut He replied, It has been written, Man shall not live and be upheld and sustained by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.

But he answering said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word which goes out through God's mouth.

5 T hen the devil took Him into the holy city and placed Him on a turret (pinnacle, gable) of the temple sanctuary.

Then the devil takes him to the holy city, and sets him upon the edge of the temple,

6 A nd he said to Him, If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, He will give His angels charge over you, and they will bear you up on their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.

and says to him, If thou be Son of God cast thyself down; for it is written, He shall give charge to his angels concerning thee, and on hands shall they bear thee, lest in anywise thou strike thy foot against a stone.

7 J esus said to him, On the other hand, it is written also, You shall not tempt, test thoroughly, or try exceedingly the Lord your God.

Jesus said to him, It is again written, Thou shalt not tempt Lord thy God.

8 A gain, the devil took Him up on a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory (the splendor, magnificence, preeminence, and excellence) of them.

Again the devil takes him to a very high mountain, and shews him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory,

9 A nd he said to Him, These things, all taken together, I will give You, if You will prostrate Yourself before me and do homage and worship me.

and says to him, All these things will I give thee if, falling down, thou wilt do me homage.

10 T hen Jesus said to him, Begone, Satan! For it has been written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve.

Then says Jesus to him, Get thee away, Satan, for it is written, Thou shalt do homage to Lord thy God, and him alone shalt thou serve.

11 T hen the devil departed from Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Then the devil leaves him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

12 N ow when Jesus heard that John had been arrested and put in prison, He withdrew into Galilee.

But having heard that John was delivered up, he departed into Galilee:

13 A nd leaving Nazareth, He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the country of Zebulun and Naphtali—

and having left Nazareth, he went and dwelt at Capernaum, which is on the sea-side in the borders of Zabulon and Nepthalim,

14 T hat what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be brought to pass:

that that might be fulfilled which was spoken through Esaias the prophet, saying,

15 T he land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, in the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles '> peoples who are not of Israel]—

Land of Zabulon and land of Nepthalim, way of sea beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations:

16 T he people who sat (dwelt enveloped) in darkness have seen a great Light, and for those who sat in the land and shadow of death Light has dawned.

—the people sitting in darkness has seen a great light, and to those sitting in country and shadow of death, to them has light sprung up.

17 F rom that time Jesus began to preach, crying out, Repent ( change your mind for the better, heartily amend your ways, with abhorrence of your past sins), for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

From that time began Jesus to preach and to say, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh.

18 A s He was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He noticed two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, throwing a dragnet into the sea, for they were fishermen.

And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers;

19 A nd He said to them, Come after Me, follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men!

and he says to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.

20 A t once they left their nets and became His disciples.

And they, having left their trawl-nets, immediately followed him.

21 A nd going on further from there He noticed two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets and putting them right; and He called them.

And going on thence he saw other two brothers, James the of Zebedee and John his brother, in the ship with Zebedee their father, mending their trawl-nets, and he called them;

22 A t once they left the boat and their father and joined Jesus as disciples.

and they, having left the ship and their father, immediately followed him.

23 A nd He went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the good news (Gospel) of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every weakness and infirmity among the people.

And went round the whole Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the glad tidings of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every bodily weakness among the people.

24 S o the report of Him spread throughout all Syria, and they brought Him all who were sick, those afflicted with various diseases and torments, those under the power of demons, and epileptics, and paralyzed people, and He healed them.

And his fame went out into the whole Syria, and they brought to him all that were ill, suffering under various diseases and pains, and those possessed by demons, and lunatics, and paralytics; and he healed them.

25 A nd great crowds joined and accompanied Him about, coming from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from the other side of the Jordan.

And great crowds followed him from Galilee, and Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judaea, and beyond the Jordan.
