1 A fter these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.

After this Jesus went over to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. It is sometimes called Tiberias.

2 A nd a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

Many people followed Him. They saw the powerful works He did on those who were sick.

3 A nd Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.

Jesus went up on a mountain and sat down with His followers.

4 A nd the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.

The special religious supper to remember how the Jews left Egypt was soon.

5 W hen Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

Jesus looked up and saw many people coming to Him. He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread to feed these people?”

6 A nd this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

He said this to see what Philip would say. Jesus knew what He would do.

7 P hilip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.

Philip said to Him, “The money we have is not enough to buy bread to give each one a little.”

8 O ne of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him,

One of His followers was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He said to Jesus,

9 T here is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

“There is a boy here who has five loaves of barley bread and two small fish. What is that for so many people?”

10 A nd Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was much grass in that place. About five thousand men sat down.

11 A nd Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks. Then He gave the bread to those who were sitting down. The fish were given out the same way. The people had as much as they wanted.

12 W hen they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.

When they were filled, Jesus said to His followers, “Gather up the pieces that are left. None will be wasted.”

13 T herefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

The followers gathered the pieces together. Twelve baskets were filled with pieces of barley bread. These were left after all the people had eaten.

14 T hen those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

The people saw the powerful work Jesus had done. They said, “It is true! This is the One Who speaks for God Who is to come into the world.” Jesus Walks on the Water

15 W hen Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

Jesus knew they were about to come and take Him to make Him king, so He went to the mountain by Himself.

16 A nd when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,

When evening had come, His followers went down to the lake.

17 A nd entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

They got into a boat and started to cross the lake to go to the city of Capernaum. By this time it was dark. Jesus had not come back to them yet.

18 A nd the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.

A strong wind was making high waves on the lake.

19 S o when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.

They were about half way across the lake when they saw Jesus walking on the water. As He got near the boat, they were afraid.

20 B ut he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.

But Jesus called to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.”

21 T hen they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

They were glad to take Him into the boat. At once they got to the other side where they wanted to go. Jesus Teaches Many People

22 T he day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;

The next day the people on the other side of the lake saw no other boat there but the one His followers had been in. The people knew Jesus had not gone with His followers in the boat because they had gone alone.

23 ( Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)

There were other boats from Tiberias that had come near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

24 W hen the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.

The people saw that Jesus and His followers were not there. They got into boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

25 A nd when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

The people found Him on the other side of the lake. They said to Him, “Teacher, when did You come here?”

26 J esus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

Jesus said to them, “For sure, I tell you, you are not looking for Me because of the powerful works. You are looking for Me because you ate bread and were filled.

27 L abour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

Do not work for food that does not last. Work for food that lasts forever. The Son of Man will give you that kind of food. God the Father has shown He will do this.” Jesus Teaches about Doing the Work of God

28 T hen said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

Then the people said to Him, “What are the works God wants us to do?”

29 J esus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Jesus said to them, “This is the work of God, that you put your trust in the One He has sent.”

30 T hey said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

They said to Him, “Can You show us some powerful work? Then we can see it and believe You. What will You do?

31 O ur fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

Our early fathers ate bread that came from heaven in the desert. This happened as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” Jesus Is the Bread of Life

32 T hen Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

Then Jesus said to the people, “For sure, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven. My Father gives you the true Bread from heaven.

33 F or the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

The Bread of God is He Who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 T hen said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

They said to Him, “Sir, give us this Bread all the time.”

35 A nd Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Jesus said to them, “I am the Bread of Life. He who comes to Me will never be hungry. He who puts his trust in Me will never be thirsty.

36 B ut I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

I said to you that you have seen Me and yet you do not put your trust in Me.

37 A ll that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

All whom My Father has given to Me will come to Me. I will never turn away anyone who comes to Me.

38 F or I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

I came down from heaven. I did not come to do what I wanted to do. I came to do what My Father wanted Me to do. He is the One Who sent Me.

39 A nd this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

“The Father sent Me. He did not want Me to lose any of all those He gave Me. He wants Me to raise them to life on the last day.

40 A nd this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

He wants everyone who sees the Son to put his trust in Him and have life that lasts forever. I will raise that one up on the last day.”

41 T he Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.

The Jews talked among themselves against Him. They did not like it because He said, “I am the Bread that came down from heaven.”

42 A nd they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?

They asked each other, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know His father and mother. How can He say, ‘I came down from heaven’ ?”

43 J esus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.

Jesus said to them, “Do not talk among yourselves against Me.

44 N o man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

The Father sent Me. No man can come to Me unless the Father gives him the desire to come to Me. Then I will raise him to life on the last day.

45 I t is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

The early preachers wrote, ‘They will all be taught of God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to Me.

46 N ot that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.

No one has seen the Father. I am the only One Who has seen Him.

47 V erily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

For sure, I tell you, he who puts his trust in Me has life that lasts forever.

48 I am that bread of life.

I am the Bread of Life.

49 Y our fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.

Your early fathers ate bread that came from heaven in the desert. They died.

50 T his is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

But this is the Bread that comes down from heaven. The one who eats it never dies.

51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

I am the Living Bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats this Bread, he will live forever. The Bread which I will give is My flesh. I will give this for the life of the world.”

52 T he Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

The Jews argued among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?”

53 T hen Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

Jesus said to them, “For sure, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life in you.

54 W hoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has life that lasts forever. I will raise him up on the last day.

55 F or my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

My flesh is true food and My blood is true drink.

56 H e that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood lives in Me and I live in him.

57 A s the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

The living Father sent Me and I live because of Him. In the same way, the one who eats Me will live because of Me.

58 T his is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

I am this Bread that came down from heaven. It is not like the bread that your early fathers ate and they died. Whoever eats this Bread will live forever.”

59 T hese things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

Jesus said these things in the Jewish place of worship while He was teaching in the city of Capernaum. The Troubled Followers Leave Jesus

60 M any therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

After hearing this, many of His followers said, “This teaching is too hard! Who can listen to it?”

61 W hen Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?

Jesus knew His followers talked against what He had said. He said to them, “Does this trouble you?

62 W hat and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

Then what would you say if you saw the Son of Man going up where He was before?

63 I t is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

It is the Spirit that gives life. The flesh is of no help. The words I speak to you are spirit and life.

64 B ut there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

But some of you do not believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning who would not put their trust in Him. He knew who would hand Him over to the leaders of the country.

65 A nd he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

He said, “That is why I told you no one can come to Me unless the Father allows it.”

66 F rom that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

From that time on, many of His followers turned back to their old ways of living. They would not go along with Him after that. Peter Knows Who Jesus Is

67 T hen said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

Then Jesus said to the twelve followers, “Will you leave Me also?”

68 T hen Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, who else can we go to? You have words that give life that lasts forever.

69 A nd we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

We believe and know You are the Christ. You are the Son of the Living God.”

70 J esus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?

Jesus said to them, “I chose you twelve as My followers. And one of you is a devil.”

71 H e spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

He was speaking of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who was one of the twelve followers. He was ready to hand Jesus over to the leaders of the country.
