The Lord said to Moses and Aaron,
2 S peak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.
“Say to the people of Israel, ‘These are the living things which you may eat among all the animals on the earth.
3 W hatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.
You may eat any animal that has hard and divided feet and chews its food again.
4 N evertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.
But among those which chew their food again or have feet that are hard and divided, do not eat the camel. For it chews its food again, but does not have feet that are hard and divided. It is unclean to you.
5 A nd the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.
Do not eat the rock badger. For it chews its food again, but does not have feet that are hard and divided. It is unclean to you.
6 A nd the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.
Do not eat the rabbit. For it chews its food again, but does not have feet that are hard and divided. It is unclean to you.
7 A nd the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.
And do not eat the pig. For it has feet that are hard and divided, but it does not chew its food again. It is unclean to you.
8 O f their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.
Do not eat their flesh or touch their dead bodies. They are unclean to you.
9 T hese shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.
‘These you may eat, of all that are in the water. You may eat everything in the water that has fins and scales, in the seas or in the rivers.
10 A nd all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
But whatever is in the seas and rivers that does not have fins and scales, among all the living things moving in the water, are to be hated by you.
11 T hey shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.
You will hate them. You may not eat their meat, and you will hate their dead bodies.
12 W hatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.
Whatever in the water does not have fins and scales will be hated by you.
13 A nd these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,
‘These you will hate among the birds. They are hated and not to be eaten: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard,
14 A nd the vulture, and the kite after his kind;
the kite, every kind of falcon,
15 E very raven after his kind;
every kind of raven,
16 A nd the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind,
the ostrich, the owl, the sea gull, every kind of hawk,
17 A nd the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,
the little owl, the cormorant, the big owl,
18 A nd the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle,
the white owl, the pelican, the vulture that eats dead flesh,
19 A nd the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.
the stork, every kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.
20 A ll fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you.
‘All bugs with wings and that walk on all fours are to be hated by you.
21 Y et these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth;
But you may eat, among all the bugs with wings and that walk on all fours, those which have legs above their feet that allow them to jump on the ground.
22 E ven these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind.
You may eat every kind of locust, every kind of destroying locust, every kind of cricket, and every kind of grasshopper.
23 B ut all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you.
But you are to hate all other bugs with wings and four feet.
24 A nd for these ye shall be unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even.
‘If you touch these you will be unclean. Whoever touches their dead bodies will be unclean until evening.
25 A nd whosoever beareth ought of the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.
And whoever picks up any of their dead bodies will wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.
26 T he carcases of every beast which divideth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, are unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean.
Every animal that has a parted foot but not a divided foot, or that does not eat its food again, is unclean to you. Whoever touches them will be unclean.
27 A nd whatsoever goeth upon his paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four, those are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even.
Whatever walks on its soft feet, among all the animals that walk on all fours, are unclean to you. Whoever touches their dead bodies will be unclean until evening.
28 A nd he that beareth the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you.
And he who picks up their dead bodies will wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. They are unclean to you.
29 T hese also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind,
‘These animals that move on the earth are unclean to you: the mole, the mouse, every kind of big lizard,
30 A nd the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.
the gecko, the crocodile, the lizard, the sand lizard, and the chameleon.
31 T hese are unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they be dead, shall be unclean until the even.
These animals that move on the earth are unclean to you. Whoever touches their dead bodies will be unclean until evening.
32 A nd upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherein any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; so it shall be cleansed.
And anything on which one of them may fall when they are dead will be unclean. Each piece of wood or clothing or skin or bag or anything used as you work, must be put in water. It will be unclean until evening. Then it will be clean.
33 A nd every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean; and ye shall break it.
If any falls into a clay pot, whatever is in the pot will be unclean. You should break the pot.
34 O f all meat which may be eaten, that on which such water cometh shall be unclean: and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean.
Any food that could be eaten but has water from such a pot on it will be unclean. And anything which could be drunk from any such pot will be unclean.
35 A nd every thing whereupon any part of their carcase falleth shall be unclean; whether it be oven, or ranges for pots, they shall be broken down: for they are unclean and shall be unclean unto you.
Everything on which part of their dead body may fall will be unclean. A stove or a place for pots must be broken. They are unclean to you.
36 N evertheless a fountain or pit, wherein there is plenty of water, shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcase shall be unclean.
But a well or a place holding water will be clean. But whoever touches a dead body will be unclean.
37 A nd if any part of their carcase fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean.
If a part of their dead body falls on any seed which is to be planted, it is clean.
38 B ut if any water be put upon the seed, and any part of their carcase fall thereon, it shall be unclean unto you.
But if water is put on the seed, and a body falls on it, it is unclean to you.
39 A nd if any beast, of which ye may eat, die; he that toucheth the carcase thereof shall be unclean until the even.
‘If one of the animals dies which you have for food, the one who touches its dead body will be unclean until evening.
40 A nd he that eateth of the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.
He who eats some of the dead body will wash his clothes and be unclean until evening. And he who picks up its dead body will wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.
41 A nd every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten.
‘Anything that moves around on the ground in large numbers is hated and is not to be eaten.
42 W hatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination.
You should not eat whatever moves on its stomach, or goes on four feet, or has many feet, among all the things that move around on the ground in large numbers. For they are hated.
43 Y e shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.
Do not make yourselves unclean by any of the small living things that move together on the ground, so you become unclean.
44 F or I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
For I am the Lord your God. So set yourselves apart, and be holy. For I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean with any of the small living things that move together in large numbers on the ground.
45 F or I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.
For I am the Lord Who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. So be holy, because I am holy.’”
46 T his is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth:
This is the Law of the animal, the bird, every living thing that moves in the water, and everything that moves on the ground.
47 T o make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.
It is so you know the difference between those that are clean and those that are unclean, and between the animal that may be eaten and the animal that may not be eaten.
