1 A fter these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.
Jesus did not stay in the country of Judea because the Jews were trying to kill Him. After this He went from place to place in the country of Galilee.
2 N ow the Jew's feast of tabernacles was at hand.
A religious gathering of the Jews was near. This gathering was called the Supper of Tents.
3 H is brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
The brothers of Jesus said to Him, “Leave here and go to the country of Judea. Let Your followers there see the things You do.
4 F or there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.
If a person wants others to know what he is doing, he does things to be seen. Since You are doing such things, show Yourself to the world.”
5 F or neither did his brethren believe in him.
Not even His brothers were putting their trust in Him.
6 T hen Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.
Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come. But any time is good for you.
7 T he world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.
The world cannot hate you but it hates Me. I speak against the world because of its sinful works.
8 G o ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast: for my time is not yet full come.
You go to the religious gathering. I am not going yet. My time has not yet come.”
9 W hen he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.
Jesus told His brothers this and then stayed in Galilee.
10 B ut when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
His brothers went to the religious gathering. He went later by Himself so He would not be seen there.
11 T hen the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
At the religious gathering the Jews were looking for Jesus. They were saying, “Where is He?”
12 A nd there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.
There was much talk among the people about Him. Some said, “He is a good Man.” Others said, “No, He leads the people in the wrong way.”
13 H owbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.
No one spoke about Him in front of other people. They were afraid of the Jews. Jesus Tells Where His Teaching Is From
14 N ow about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
The religious gathering was half over when Jesus went to the house of God and taught.
15 A nd the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
The Jews were surprised and wondered, saying, “How can this Man know so much when He has never been to school?”
16 J esus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
Jesus said to them, “What I teach is not Mine. It is from God Who sent Me.
17 I f any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
If anyone will do what God wants, he will know if My teaching is from God, or if I am speaking of Myself.
18 H e that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
The man who speaks of himself is looking for greatness for himself. But He Who is looking for the greatness of the One Who sent Him is true. There is nothing false in Him.
19 D id not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law. Why do you try to kill me?”
20 T he people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?
The people said, “You have a demon in You. Who is trying to kill You?”
21 J esus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.
Jesus said to them, “I did one work and you are surprised.
22 M oses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
Moses gave you the religious act of becoming a Jew. (Yet it was not from Moses but from the early fathers.) You do this religious act on a man on the Day of Rest.
23 I f a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?
Now if you can do that, why are you angry with Me for healing a man on the Day of Rest?
24 J udge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
Do not say a person is guilty by what you see. Be sure you know when you say what is right or wrong.”
25 T hen said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?
Some of the people of Jerusalem said, “Is not this the Man the Jews want to kill?
26 B ut, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
But see! This Man is speaking out in the open. They are saying nothing to Him. Do the leaders know this is the true Christ?
27 H owbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.
We know where this Man came from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He comes from.”
28 T hen cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.
Then Jesus spoke with a loud voice as He taught in the house of God. He said, “You know Me. You know where I came from. I have not come on My own. The One Who sent Me is true but you do not know Him.
29 B ut I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.
I know Him because I am from Him and He sent Me.”
30 T hen they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
Then they wanted to take Jesus but no one put his hands on Him. His time had not yet come.
31 A nd many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?
Many of the people believed in Him. They said, “When Christ comes, will He do more powerful works than this Man?”
32 T he Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.
The proud religious law-keepers heard the people talking about Jesus. The religious leaders of the Jews and the proud religious law-keepers sent soldiers to take Him.
33 T hen said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.
Jesus said to them, “I will be with you a little while yet. Then I will go back to Him Who sent Me.
34 Y e shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.
You will look for Me but you will not find Me. Where I go, you cannot come.”
35 T hen said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?
The Jews said to themselves, “Where can He go that we will not find Him? Will He go to our people who live among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?
36 W hat manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?
What does He mean when He says, ‘You will look for Me but you will not find Me, and where I go, you cannot come’ ?” Jesus Promises to Give the Holy Spirit
37 I n the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
It was the last and great day of the religious gathering. Jesus stood up and spoke with a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
38 H e that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
The Holy Writings say that rivers of living water will flow from the heart of the one who puts his trust in Me.”
39 ( But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Jesus said this about the Holy Spirit Who would come to those who put their trust in Him. The Holy Spirit had not yet been given. Jesus had not yet been raised to the place of honor. The People Cannot Make Up Their Minds Who He Is
40 M any of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.
When many of the people heard His words, they said, “For sure, this is the One Who speaks for God.”
41 O thers said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?
Others said, “He is the Christ!” Some said, “The Christ would not come from the country of Galilee, would He?
42 H ath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
Do not the Holy Writings say that the Christ will come from the family of David? Will He not come from the town of Bethlehem where David lived?”
43 S o there was a division among the people because of him.
The people were divided in what they thought about Him.
44 A nd some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
Some of them wanted to take Him. But no one put their hands on Him.
45 T hen came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?
The soldiers came back to the religious leaders of the Jews and to the proud religious law-keepers. They said to the soldiers, “Why did you not bring Him?”
46 T he officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
The soldiers answered, “No man has ever spoken like this Man speaks.”
47 T hen answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?
The proud religious law-keepers said, “Have you been led the wrong way also?
48 H ave any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?
Has anyone of the leaders or anyone from our group believed in Him?
49 B ut this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.
As for all these people, they do not know the Law. They are guilty and will be punished by God.”
50 N icodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)
(Nicodemus was one of the proud religious law-keepers. He had come to Jesus at another time.) Nicodemus said to them,
51 D oth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?
“Our Law does not say a man is guilty before he has been in court and before we know what he has done.”
52 T hey answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
They said to him, “Are you from Galilee also? Look into the Word of God yourself. You will see that no one who speaks for God comes from Galilee.”
53 A nd every man went unto his own house.
Then everyone went home.
