The sons of Levi were Gershon, Kohath and Merari.

2 A nd the sons of Kohath; Amram, Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel.

The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.

3 A nd the children of Amram; Aaron, and Moses, and Miriam. The sons also of Aaron; Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

The children of Amram were Aaron, Moses and Miriam. And the sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

4 E leazar begat Phinehas, Phinehas begat Abishua,

Eleazar was the father of Phinehas. Phinehas was the father of Abishua.

5 A nd Abishua begat Bukki, and Bukki begat Uzzi,

Abishua was the father of Bukki. Bukki was the father of Uzzi.

6 A nd Uzzi begat Zerahiah, and Zerahiah begat Meraioth,

Uzzi was the father of Zerahiah. Zerahiah was the father of Meraioth.

7 M eraioth begat Amariah, and Amariah begat Ahitub,

Meraioth was the father of Amariah. Amariah was the father of Ahitub.

8 A nd Ahitub begat Zadok, and Zadok begat Ahimaaz,

Ahitub was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Ahimaaz.

9 A nd Ahimaaz begat Azariah, and Azariah begat Johanan,

Ahimaaz was the father of Azariah. Azariah was the father of Johanan.

10 A nd Johanan begat Azariah, (he it is that executed the priest's office in the temple that Solomon built in Jerusalem:)

Johanan was the father of Azariah. (He was the one who served as the religious leader in the house which Solomon built in Jerusalem.)

11 A nd Azariah begat Amariah, and Amariah begat Ahitub,

Azariah was the father of Amariah. Amariah was the father of Ahitub.

12 A nd Ahitub begat Zadok, and Zadok begat Shallum,

Ahitub was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Shallum.

13 A nd Shallum begat Hilkiah, and Hilkiah begat Azariah,

Shallum was the father of Hilkiah. Hilkiah was the father of Azariah.

14 A nd Azariah begat Seraiah, and Seraiah begat Jehozadak,

Azariah was the father of Seraiah. Seraiah was the father of Jehozadak.

15 A nd Jehozadak went into captivity, when the Lord carried away Judah and Jerusalem by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.

Jehozadak was taken away when the Lord carried Judah and Jerusalem away to a strange land by Nebuchadnezzar.

16 T he sons of Levi; Gershom, Kohath, and Merari.

The sons of Levi were Gershom, Kohath and Merari.

17 A nd these be the names of the sons of Gershom; Libni, and Shimei.

The names of the sons of Gershom were Libni and Shimei.

18 A nd the sons of Kohath were, Amram, and Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel.

The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.

19 T he sons of Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. And these are the families of the Levites according to their fathers.

The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites by their fathers’ houses.

20 O f Gershom; Libni his son, Jahath his son, Zimmah his son,

Of Gershom there were Libni his son, Jahath his son, Zimmah his son,

21 J oah his son, Iddo his son, Zerah his son, Jeaterai his son.

The sons of Kohath were Amminadab, Korah his son, Assir his son,

The sons of Samuel were Joel the first-born, and Abijah the second.

29 T he sons of Merari; Mahli, Libni his son, Shimei his son, Uzza his son,

The sons of Merari were Mahli, Libni his son, Shimei his son, Uzzah his son,

30 S himea his son, Haggiah his son, Asaiah his son.

31 A nd these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of the Lord, after that the ark had rest.

David chose these men to lead the singing in the house of the Lord, after the special box with the Law of the Lord rested there.

32 A nd they ministered before the dwelling place of the tabernacle of the congregation with singing, until Solomon had built the house of the Lord in Jerusalem: and then they waited on their office according to their order.

They led the singing in front of the meeting tent until Solomon had built the house of the Lord in Jerusalem. And they took their places for their work at the right times.

33 A nd these are they that waited with their children. Of the sons of the Kohathites: Heman a singer, the son of Joel, the son of Shemuel,

These are the men who served, and their sons. From the sons of the Kohathites were Heman the singer, the son of Joel, son of Samuel,

45 T he son of Hashabiah, the son of Amaziah, the son of Hilkiah,

48 T heir brethren also the Levites were appointed unto all manner of service of the tabernacle of the house of God.

Their brothers the Levites were chosen for all the work of the house of God. The Family of Aaron

49 B ut Aaron and his sons offered upon the altar of the burnt offering, and on the altar of incense, and were appointed for all the work of the place most holy, and to make an atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

But Aaron and his sons gave the gifts on the altar of burnt gifts and on the altar of special perfume. They did all the work of the most holy place, to pay for the sins of Israel. They did all that Moses the servant of God had told them to do.

50 A nd these are the sons of Aaron; Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son, Abishua his son,

The sons of Aaron were Eleazar, Phinehas his son, Abishua his son,

54 N ow these are their dwelling places throughout their castles in their coasts, of the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites: for theirs was the lot.

These are the places where they lived in their lands. The sons of Aaron of the families of the Kohathites were first to choose where to live.

55 A nd they gave them Hebron in the land of Judah, and the suburbs thereof round about it.

They were given Hebron in the land of Judah, and the fields around it.

56 B ut the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

But the fields of the city and its towns were given to Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

57 A nd to the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of Judah, namely, Hebron, the city of refuge, and Libnah with her suburbs, and Jattir, and Eshtemoa, with their suburbs,

The sons of Aaron were given cities where people go to be safe. These cities were Hebron, Libnah with its fields, Jatir, Eshtemoa with its fields,

58 A nd Hilen with her suburbs, Debir with her suburbs,

Hilen with its fields, Debir with its fields,

59 A nd Ashan with her suburbs, and Bethshemesh with her suburbs:

Ashan with its fields, and Beth-shemesh with its fields.

60 A nd out of the tribe of Benjamin; Geba with her suburbs, and Alemeth with her suburbs, and Anathoth with her suburbs. All their cities throughout their families were thirteen cities.

From the family of Benjamin they were given Geba with its fields, Allemeth with its fields, and Anathoth with its fields. There were thirteen cities in all, by their families.

61 A nd unto the sons of Kohath, which were left of the family of that tribe, were cities given out of the half tribe, namely, out of the half tribe of Manasseh, by lot, ten cities.

Ten cities were given, by drawing names, to the rest of the sons of Kohath. These cities were given from the families of the half-family group of Manasseh.

62 A nd to the sons of Gershom throughout their families out of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities.

Thirteen cities were given to the sons of Gershom, by their families. These cities were given from the families of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Manasseh.

63 U nto the sons of Merari were given by lot, throughout their families, out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

Twelve cities were given, by drawing names, to the sons of Merari, by their families. These cities were given from the families of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

64 A nd the children of Israel gave to the Levites these cities with their suburbs.

So the people of Israel gave to the Levites the cities with their fields.

65 A nd they gave by lot out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, and out of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, these cities, which are called by their names.

By drawing names, they gave them these cities which are written here, from the families of the sons of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin.

66 A nd the residue of the families of the sons of Kohath had cities of their coasts out of the tribe of Ephraim.

Some of the families of the sons of Kohath had cities of their land from the family of Ephraim.

67 A nd they gave unto them, of the cities of refuge, Shechem in mount Ephraim with her suburbs; they gave also Gezer with her suburbs,

They were given cities where anyone could go to be safe. These cities were Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim with its fields, Gezer with its fields,

68 A nd Jokmeam with her suburbs, and Bethhoron with her suburbs,

Jokmeam with its fields, Beth-horon with its fields,

69 A nd Aijalon with her suburbs, and Gathrimmon with her suburbs:

Aijalon with its fields, and Gath-rimmon with its fields.

70 A nd out of the half tribe of Manasseh; Aner with her suburbs, and Bileam with her suburbs, for the family of the remnant of the sons of Kohath.

From the half-family group of Manasseh they were given Aner with its fields and Bileam with its fields. They were for the rest of the family of the sons of Kohath.

71 U nto the sons of Gershom were given out of the family of the half tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan with her suburbs, and Ashtaroth with her suburbs:

Cities were given to the sons of Gershom from the half-family group of Manasseh. These cities were Golan in Bashan with its fields and Ashtaroth with its fields.

72 A nd out of the tribe of Issachar; Kedesh with her suburbs, Daberath with her suburbs,

From the family of Issachar they were given Kedesh with its fields, Daberath with its fields,

73 A nd Ramoth with her suburbs, and Anem with her suburbs:

Ramoth with its fields, and Anem with its fields.

74 A nd out of the tribe of Asher; Mashal with her suburbs, and Abdon with her suburbs,

From the family of Asher they were given Mashal with its fields, Abdon with its fields,

75 A nd Hukok with her suburbs, and Rehob with her suburbs:

Hukok with its fields, and Rehob with its fields.

76 A nd out of the tribe of Naphtali; Kedesh in Galilee with her suburbs, and Hammon with her suburbs, and Kirjathaim with her suburbs.

From the family of Naphtali they were given Kedesh in Galilee with its fields, Hammon with its fields, and Kiriathaim with its fields.

77 U nto the rest of the children of Merari were given out of the tribe of Zebulun, Rimmon with her suburbs, Tabor with her suburbs:

The rest of the Levites, the sons of Merari were given cities from the family of Zebulun. These cities were Rimmono with its fields and Tabor with its fields.

78 A nd on the other side Jordan by Jericho, on the east side of Jordan, were given them out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer in the wilderness with her suburbs, and Jahzah with her suburbs,

On the other side of the Jordan at Jericho, on the east side of the Jordan, they were given cities from the family of Reuben. These cities were Bezer in the desert with its fields, Jahzah with its fields,

79 K edemoth also with her suburbs, and Mephaath with her suburbs:

Kedemoth with its fields, and Mephaath with its fields.

80 A nd out of the tribe of Gad; Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs, and Mahanaim with her suburbs,

From the family of Gad they were given Ramoth in Gilead with its fields, Mahanaim with its fields,

81 A nd Heshbon with her suburbs, and Jazer with her suburbs.
