1 N ow these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:

“These are the Laws which the Lord your God has told me to teach you. You are to do them in the land you are going to take for your own.

2 T hat thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

Then you and your son and your grandson will fear the Lord your God. You will obey all His Laws that I tell you, all the days of your life. And then you will have a longer life.

3 H ear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

O Israel, you should listen and be careful to do them. Then it will go well with you. And you will become many in a land flowing with milk and honey. This is what the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you.

4 H ear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:

“Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord!

5 A nd thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

6 A nd these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

Keep these words in your heart that I am telling you today.

7 A nd thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Do your best to teach them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you get up.

8 A nd thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

Tie them as something special to see on your hand and on your forehead.

9 A nd thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Write them beside the door of your house and on your gates.

10 A nd it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,

“The Lord your God will bring you into the land He promised to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give to you. There will be big and beautiful cities which you did not build.

11 A nd houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;

Houses will be full of good things which you did not fill. There will be pools for keeping water which you did not dig, and grape vines and olive trees which you did not plant. You will eat and be filled.

12 T hen beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

But then be careful not to forget the Lord Who brought you from the land of Egypt, out of the land where you were held as servants.

13 T hou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

You must fear the Lord your God. You must worship Him, and swear by His name.

14 Y e shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;

Do not follow other gods, any of the gods of the people around you.

15 ( For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

Or the anger of the Lord your God will burn against you. He will destroy you from the earth. For the Lord your God Who is among you is a jealous God.

16 Y e shall not tempt the Lord your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

“Do not test the Lord your God, as you put Him to the test at Massah.

17 Y e shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.

Be careful to keep all the Laws which the Lord your God has told you.

18 A nd thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers.

Do what is right and good in the eyes of the Lord. Then it will be well with you. And you may go in and take the good land for your own which the Lord promised to give to your fathers.

19 T o cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the Lord hath spoken.

You will drive out of your way all who hate you, as the Lord has promised.

20 A nd when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord our God hath commanded you?

“In time to come your son will ask you, ‘What do all the Laws mean which the Lord told you?’

21 T hen thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:

Then say to your son, ‘We were servants of Pharaoh in Egypt. But the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand.

22 A nd the Lord shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes:

The Lord showed us great and powerful works against Egypt, Pharaoh, and all those of his house.

23 A nd he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.

The Lord brought us out from there to bring us into the land He had promised to our fathers.’

24 A nd the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.

So the Lord told us to do all these Laws and to fear the Lord our God for our good always, as it is today.

25 A nd it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.

We will be right with the Lord our God if we are careful to obey all of the Law before Him, just as He told us.
