1 أ يُّها الإخوَةُ، أُرِيدُ أنْ أُذَكِّرَكُمْ بِأنَّ آباءَنا كانُوا تَحتَ السَّحابَةِ. وَعَبَرُوا جَمِيعاً البَحرَ الأحمَرَ.

¶ Moreover, brothers, I would that ye not ignore how our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea

2 و َتَعَمَّدُوا جَمِيعاً فِي السَّحابَةِ وَفِي البَحرِ خاضِعينَ لِمُوسَى.

and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea

3 و َأكَلُوا جَمِيعاً الطَّعامَ الرُّوحِيَّ نَفسَهُ.

and did all eat the same spiritual food

4 و َشَرِبُوا جَمِيعاً الشَّرابَ الرُّوحِيَّ نَفسَهُ. فَقَدْ كانُوا يَشرَبُونَ مِنَ الصَّخرَةِ الرُّوحِيَّةِ الَّتِي كانَتْ تَتبَعُهُمْ، وَكانَتْ تِلكَ الصَّخرَةُ هِيَ المَسِيحَ.

and did all drink the same spiritual drink, for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them; and that Rock was the Christ.

5 ل َكِنَّ اللهَ لَمْ يَرضَ عَنْ أكثَرِهِمْ، فَقُتِلُوا فِي البَرِّيَّةِ.

But with many of them God was not pleased; therefore, they were overthrown in the wilderness.

6 و َقَدْ حَدَثَتْ هَذِهِ الأُمُورُ مِثالاً لَنا، لِئَلّا نَكُونَ مِمَّنْ يَشتَهُونَ أُمُوراً شِرِّيرَةً مِثلَهُمْ.

¶ Now these things became types of us, that we should not lust after evil things as they lusted.

7 ف َلا تَكُونُوا عَبَدَةَ أوثانٍ كَما كانَ بَعضٌ مِنهُمْ. كَما يَقُولُ الكِتابُ: «جَلَسَ الشَّعبُ لِيَأكُلُوا وَيَشْرَبُوا، وَنَهَضُوا لِيُرَفِّهُوا عَنْ أنفُسِهِمْ.»

Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.

8 و لا يَنبَغي أنْ نَزني كَما فَعَلَ بَعضٌ مِنهُمْ، فَسَقَطَ مِنهُمْ ثَلاثَةٌ وَعِشرُونَ ألفاً أمواتاً فِي يَومٍ واحِدٍ!

Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed and fell dead: in one day, twenty-three thousand.

9 و َأنْ لا نُجَرِّبَ المَسِيحَ، كَما فَعَلَ بَعضٌ مِنهُمْ، فَقَتَلَتهُمُ الحَيّاتُ.

Neither let us tempt the Christ, as some of them also tempted and perished by the serpents.

10 و َلا تَتَذَمَّرُوا، كَما فَعَلَ بَعضٌ مِنهُمْ، فَأماتَهُمُ المَلاكُ المُهلِكُ.

Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured and perished by the destroyer.

11 ح َدَثَتْ لَهُمْ هَذِهِ مِثالاً لَنا، وَكُتِبَتْ مِنْ أجلِ تَحذِيرِنا، نَحنُ الَّذِينَ أدرَكَتْنا نِهايَةُ العُصُورِ.

Now all these things happened unto them as types, and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

12 ف َليَحذَرْ مَنْ يَظُنُّ أنَّهُ ثابِتٌ لِئَلّا يَسقُطَ.

Therefore let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

13 ل َمْ تُصِبكُمْ تَجرِبَةٌ لا تَأتِي عَلَى غَيرِكُمْ مِنَ البَشَرِ، لَكِنْ يُمكِنُكُمْ أنْ تَثِقُوا بِاللهِ الَّذي لا يَسمَحُ بِأنْ تُجَرَّبُوا فَوقَ طاقَتِكُمْ، بَلْ يُوفِّرُ مَعَ التَّجرِبَةِ مَنفَذاً، لِكَيْ تَقدِرُوا أنْ تَحتَمِلُوا.

No temptation has taken you but such as is common to man, but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above what ye are able but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

14 و َخُلاصَةُ الحَدِيثِ، أيُّها الإخوَةُ الأحِبّاءُ، اهرُبُوا مِنْ عِبادَةِ الأوثانِ.

Therefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

15 أ نا أُحَدِّثُكُمْ كَعُقَلاءَ، فَاحكُمُوا بِأنفُسِكُمْ عَلَى ما أقُولُ.

¶ I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

16 أ لَيسَتْ كَأْسُ البَرَكَةِ الَّتِي نُبارِكُ اللهَ مِنْ أجلِها، هِيَ أنْ نَشتَرِكَ مَعاً فِي دَمِ المَسِيحِ؟ ألَيسَ الخُبزُ الَّذِي نَكسِرُهُ، هُوَ أنْ نَشتَرِكَ فِي جَسَدِ المَسِيحِ؟

The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the fellowship of the blood of the Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the fellowship of the body of the Christ?

17 ف َالرَّغِيفُ الواحِدُ مِنَ الخُبزِ يَعنِي أنَّنا نَحنُ الكَثِيرِينَ نُؤَلِّفُ جَسَداً واحِداً، لِأنَّ لَنا جَمِيعاً نَصِيباً فِي الرَّغِيفِ.

For one loaf of bread means that many are one body, for we are all partakers of that one loaf.

18 ت َأمَّلُوا ما يَفعَلُهُ بَنُو إسرائِيلَ. ألَيسَ الَّذِينَ يَأكُلُونَ الذَّبائِحَ، هُمْ مُشارِكُونَ فِي المَذبَحِ؟

Behold Israel after the flesh: are not those who eat of the sacrifices participants of the altar?

19 ف َماذا أعنِي بِهَذا؟ هَلْ أعنِي أنَّ لِلطَّعامِ المَذبُوحِ لِلأوثانِ قِيمَةً، أوْ أنَّ لِلوَثَنِ قِيمَةً؟

What do I say then? that the idol is anything or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is anything?

20 ل ا، بَلْ ما أعنِيهِ هُوَ أنَّ ما يُضَحِّي بِهِ هَؤُلاءِ النّاسُ فَإنَّما يُضَحُّونَ بِهِ لِلأرواحِ الشِّرِّيرَةِ، لا للهِ! وَأنا لا أُرِيدُكُمْ أنْ تَكُونُوا شُرَكاءَ الأرواحِ الشِّرِّيرَةِ.

But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God; and I would not that ye should be participants of demons.

21 ف َلا يُمكِنُكُمْ أنْ تَشرَبُوا كَأْسَ الرَّبِّ وَكَأْسَ الأرواحِ الشِّرِّيرَةِ أيضاً. وَلا يُمكِنُكُمْ أنْ تَشتَرِكُوا فِي مِائِدَةِ الرَّبِّ وَمائِدَةِ الأرواحِ الشِّرِّيرَةِ أيضاً.

Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; ye cannot be participants of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.

22 أ مْ لَعَلَّنا نُحاوِلُ أنْ نُثِيرَ غَيرَةَ الرَّبِّ؟ ألَعَلَّنا أقوَى مِنهُ؟ فَاسْتَخدِمُوا حُرِّيَتَكُمْ لِمَجدِ اللهِ.

Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

23 ل ِي الحَقُّ فِي أنْ أفعَلَ أيَّ شَيءٍ، لَكِنْ لَيسَ كُلُّ شَيءٍ نافِعاً. لِي الحَقُّ فِي أنْ أفعَلَ أيَّ شَيءٍ، لَكِنْ لَيسَ كُلُّ شَيءٍ يَبنِي.

¶ All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient; all things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify.

24 ف َعَلَى كُلِّ واحِدٍ أنْ لا يَنظُرَ إلَى مَصالِحِهِ الشَّخصِيَّةِ، بَلْ إلَى مَصالِحِ الآخَرِينَ.

Let no one seek his own good, but that of the other.

25 ك ُلُوا كُلَّ ما يُباعُ فِي المَلحَمَةِ دُونَ استِفسارٍ عَنْ أصلِهِ.

Whatever is sold in the market, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake;

26 ف َكَما يَقُولُ الكِتابُ: «الأرْضُ وَكُلُّ ما فِيها مُلكٌ لِلرَّبِّ.»

for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.

27 و َإذا دَعاكَ شَخصٌ غَيرُ مُؤمِنٍ إلَى طَعامٍ، وَقَبِلْتَ الدَّعوَةَ، فَكُلْ أيَّ شَيءٍ يُوضَعُ أمامَكَ. وَلا تَطرَحْ أسئِلَةً عَنِ اللَّحمِ تَتَعَلَّقُ بِالضَّميرِ.

If any of those that do not believe bid you to a feast, and ye are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you asking no questions for conscience sake.

28 ل َكِنْ إذا قالَ لَكَ أحَدُهُمْ: «هَذا لَحمٌ قُدِّمَ ذَبِيحَةً لِلأوثانِ،» فَلا تَأكُلْ مِنهُ، مِنْ أجلِ الشَّخصِ الَّذِي أخبَرَكَ، وَمِنْ أجلِ الضَّمِيرِ.

But if anyone says unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, do not eat it for the sake of him that disclosed it and for conscience sake; for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof:

29 ل ا ضَمِيرِكَ أنتَ، بَلْ ضَمِيرِ الشَّخصِ الآخَرِ. وَهَذا هُوَ السَّبَبُ الوَحِيدُ، إذْ لا يَنبَغي أنْ يُقَيِّدَ حُرِّيَّتِي ضَمِيرُ شَخصٍ آخَرَ.

conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other, for why should my liberty be judged by another man’s conscience?

30 و َبِما أنِّي آكُلُ شاكِراً، فَلِماذا يُوَجَّهُ إلَيَّ الانتِقادُ بِسَبَبِ شَيءٍ أشكُرُ اللهَ عَلَيهِ؟

For if I by grace am a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

31 ف َإنْ كُنتُمْ تَأكُلُونَ أوْ تَشرَبُونَ، أوْ مَهما فَعَلْتُمْ، فَافعَلُوهُ مِنْ أجلِ مَجدِ اللهِ.

Whether therefore ye eat or drink or whatever ye do, do everything for the glory of God.

32 و َلا تَضَعُوا عَقَباتٍ أمامَ اليَهُودِ وَلا أمامَ غَيرِ اليَهُودِ أوْ أمامَ الَّذِينَ يَنتَمُونَ إلَى كَنِيسَةِ اللهِ.

Be without offense, neither to the Jews nor to the Gentiles nor to the congregation of God;

33 و َأنا أفعَلُ هَذا لإرضاءِ الجَمِيعِ بِكُلِّ طَرِيقَةٍ مُمكِنَةٍ، غَيرَ ساعٍ إلَى ما فِيهِ مَصلَحَتِي بَلْ مَصلَحَةِ الجَمِيعِ، راجِياً أنْ يَخلُصُوا.

even as I please everyone in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
