1 T he Lord said to Moses,
And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,
2 “ Send men to spy out the land of Canaan which I am going to give to the people of Israel. Send a man from each of their fathers’ families, every one a leader among them.”
Send thou men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a prince among them.
3 S o Moses sent them from the desert of Paran, as the Lord had told him. All of the men were heads of the people of Israel.
And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of Jehovah: all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.
4 T hese were their names. There was Shammua the son of Zaccur from the family of Reuben,
And these were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.
5 S haphat the son of Hori from the family of Simeon,
Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.
6 C aleb the son of Jephunneh from the family of Judah,
Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
7 a nd Igal the son of Joseph from the family of Issachar.
Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.
8 T here was Hoshea the son of Nun from the family of Ephraim,
Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun.
9 P alti the son of Raphu from the family of Benjamin,
Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.
10 G addiel the son of Sodi from the family of Zebulun,
Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.
11 a nd Gaddi the son of Susi from the family of Joseph, from the family of Manasseh.
Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.
12 T here was Ammiel the son of Gemalli from the family of Dan,
Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.
13 S ethur the son of Michael from the family of Asher,
Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.
14 N ahbi the son of Vophsi from the family of Naphtali,
Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.
15 a nd Geuel the son of Machi from the family of Gad.
Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
16 T hese are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. But Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua.
These are the names of the men that Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.
17 M oses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan. He said to them, “Go up there into the Negev. Then go up into the hill country.
And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way by the South, and go up into the hill-country:
18 S ee what the land is like. See if the people who live in it are strong or weak, and if they are few or many.
and see the land, what it is; and the people that dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;
19 F ind out if the land they live in is good or bad. See if the cities they live in are open or if they have walls.
and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;
20 F ind out if the land is rich or poor, and if there are trees in it or not. Then try to get some of the fruit of the land.” Now this was the gathering time of the first grown grapes.
and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.
21 S o they went up and spied out the land from the Desert of Zin as far as Rehob, at Lebo-hamath.
So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath.
22 W hen they had gone up into the Negev, they came to Hebron. Anak’s sons Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai were there. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
And they went up by the South, and came unto Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23 T hen they came to the valley of Eshcol. They cut down a branch from there with some grapes on it. And they carried it on a long piece of wood between two men, with some pomegranates and figs.
And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it upon a staff between two; they brought also of the pomegranates, and of the figs.
24 T hat place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of much fruit the men of Israel cut down from there.
That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
25 T hey returned from looking over the land after forty days.
And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.
26 A nd they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the people of Israel in the desert of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought news to them and to all the people, and showed them the fruit of the land.
And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.
27 T hey told Moses, “We went to the land where you sent us. It does flow with milk and honey. This is its fruit.
And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us; and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
28 B ut the people who live in the land are strong. The cities have walls and are very large. And we saw the children of Anak there.
Howbeit the people that dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
29 A malek is living in the land of the Negev. The Hittites and Jebusites and Amorites are living in the hill country. And the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan.”
Amalek dwelleth in the land of the South: and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the hill-country; and the Canaanite dwelleth by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.
30 T hen Caleb told the people in front of Moses to be quiet. And he said, “Let us go up at once and take the land. For we are well able to take it in battle.”
And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.
31 B ut the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go against the people. They are too strong for us.”
But the men that went up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
32 S o they brought the people of Israel bad news about the land they had spied out, saying, “The land we have gone to spy out is a land that destroys those who go there to live. All the people we saw in it are very large.
And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature.
33 W e saw the Nephilim there. (The sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim.) We looked like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”
And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
