1 A braham traveled from there to the land of the Negev, and made his home between Kadesh and Shur. Then he lived for a time in Gerar.
And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the land of the South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur. And he sojourned in Gerar.
2 A braham said about his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.” So Abimelech king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her for his wife.
And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. And Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.
3 B ut God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and said, “See, you are a dead man because of the woman you have taken. For she is already married.”
But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, because of the woman whom thou hast taken. For she is a man's wife.
4 B ut Abimelech had not come near her. He said, “Lord, will You destroy a nation who is without blame?
Now Abimelech had not come near her. And he said, Lord, wilt thou slay even a righteous nation?
5 D id the man not tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And she, even she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ I have done this with a heart of honor and with hands that are not guilty.”
Said he not himself unto me, She is my sister? And she, even she herself said, He is my brother. In the integrity of my heart and the innocency of my hands have I done this.
6 T hen God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you have done this with a heart of honor. And I kept you from sinning against Me. I did not let you touch her.
And God said unto him in the dream, Yea, I know that in the integrity of thy heart thou has done this, and I also withheld thee from sinning against me. Therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
7 S o now return the man’s wife. For he is one who speaks for Me. Then he will pray for you, and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you and all who are yours will die for sure.”
Now therefore restore the man's wife. For he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live. And if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.
8 S o Abimelech got up early in the morning. He called all his servants and told them all these things. And the men were very much afraid.
And Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ear. And the men were sore afraid.
9 T hen Abimelech called Abraham and said, “What have you done to us? What wrong have I done to you, that made you bring a great sin upon me and my nation? You have done to me what should not have been done.”
Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? And wherein have I sinned against thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? Thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.
10 A bimelech said to Abraham, “What made you do such a thing?”
And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?
11 A braham said, “I did it because I thought there was no fear of God in this place. I thought they would kill me because of my wife.
And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place. And they will slay me for my wife's sake.
12 A nd it is true she is my sister. She is the daughter of my father, but not of my mother. And she became my wife.
And moreover she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife:
13 W hen God made me go from my father’s house, I said to Sarah, ‘This is the kindness you must show me. Everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”
and it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt show unto me. At every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.
14 T hen Abimelech gave to Abraham sheep and cattle, and men and women servants. And he returned his wife Sarah to him.
And Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and men-servants and women-servants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.
15 A bimelech said, “See, my land is in front of you. Make your home any place you want.”
And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee. Dwell where it pleaseth thee.
16 H e said to Sarah, “See, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is to pay you for all that has happened. Your honor is made right in the eyes of all men.”
And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver. Behold, it is for thee a covering of the eyes to all that are with thee. And in respect of all thou art righted.
17 S o Abraham prayed to God. And God healed Abimelech, his wife and the women who served him, so that they gave birth to children.
And Abraham prayed unto God. And God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid-servants. And they bare children.
18 F or the Lord had stopped all births in the house of Abimelech because of Abraham’s wife Sarah.
For Jehovah had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
