1 I srael came out of Egypt. The house of Jacob came from a people who spoke a strange language.
When Israel went forth out of Egypt, The house of Jacob from a people of strange language;
2 T hen Judah became His holy place, and Israel became the place of His rule.
Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion.
3 T he sea looked and ran away. The Jordan turned back.
The sea saw it, and fled; The Jordan was driven back.
4 T he mountains jumped like sheep, the hills like lambs.
The mountains skipped like rams, The little hills like lambs.
5 W hy did you try to get away, O sea? Why did you turn back, O Jordan?
What aileth thee, O thou sea, that thou fleest? Thou Jordan, that thou turnest back?
6 O mountains, why did you jump like sheep? O hills, why did you jump like lambs?
Ye mountains, that ye skip like rams; Ye little hills, like lambs?
7 S hake in fear before the Lord, O earth, before the God of Jacob.
Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, At the presence of the God of Jacob,
8 H e changed the rock into a pool of water. He made water flow out of hard rock.
Who turned the rock into a pool of water, The flint into a fountain of waters.
