1 T hen the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,

Then from Jerusalem came scribes and Pharisees and said,

2 Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”

Why do Your disciples transgress and violate the rules handed down by the elders of the past? For they do not practice washing their hands before they eat.

3 H e answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?

He replied to them, And why also do you transgress and violate the commandment of God for the sake of the rules handed down to you by your forefathers (the elders)?

4 F or God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’

For God commanded, Honor your father and your mother, and, He who curses or reviles or speaks evil of or abuses or treats improperly his father or mother, let him surely come to his end by death.

5 B ut you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God ”—

But you say, If anyone tells his father or mother, What you would have gained from me is already dedicated as a gift to God, then he is exempt and no longer under obligation to honor and help his father or his mother.

6 t hen he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.

So for the sake of your tradition (the rules handed down by your forefathers), you have set aside the Word of God.

7 H ypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:

You pretenders (hypocrites)! Admirably and truly did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said:

8 These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.

These people draw near Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts hold off and are far away from Me.

9 A nd in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”

Uselessly do they worship Me, for they teach as doctrines the commands of men.

10 W hen He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand:

And Jesus called the people to Him and said to them, Listen and grasp and comprehend this:

11 N ot what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”

It is not what goes into the mouth of a man that makes him unclean and defiled, but what comes out of the mouth; this makes a man unclean and defiles.

12 T hen His disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”

Then the disciples came and said to Him, Do You know that the Pharisees were displeased and offended and indignant when they heard this saying?

13 B ut He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.

He answered, Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be torn up by the roots.

14 L et them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”

Let them alone and disregard them; they are blind guides and teachers. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a ditch.

15 T hen Peter answered and said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”

But Peter said to Him, Explain this proverb (this maxim) to us.

16 S o Jesus said, “Are you also still without understanding?

And He said, Are you also even yet dull and ignorant '> unable to put things together]?

17 D o you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated?

Do you not see and understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the abdomen and so passes on into the place where discharges are deposited?

18 B ut those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.

But whatever comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this is what makes a man unclean and defiles.

19 F or out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.

For out of the heart come evil thoughts (reasonings and disputings and designs) such as murder, adultery, sexual vice, theft, false witnessing, slander, and irreverent speech.

20 T hese are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.” A Gentile Shows Her Faith

These are what make a man unclean and defile; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him unclean or defile.

21 T hen Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

And going away from there, Jesus withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.

22 A nd behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.”

And behold, a woman who was a Canaanite from that district came out and, with a cry, begged, Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is miserably and distressingly and cruelly possessed by a demon!

23 B ut He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.”

But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, Send her away, for she is crying out after us.

24 B ut He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

25 T hen she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”

But she came and, kneeling, worshiped Him and kept praying, Lord, help me!

26 B ut He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”

And He answered, It is not right (proper, becoming, or fair) to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.

27 A nd she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”

She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the little pups ( little whelps) eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.

28 T hen Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour. Jesus Heals Great Multitudes

Then Jesus answered her, O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you wish. And her daughter was cured from that moment.

29 J esus departed from there, skirted the Sea of Galilee, and went up on the mountain and sat down there.

And Jesus went on from there and passed along the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Then He went up into the hills and kept sitting there.

30 T hen great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them.

And a great multitude came to Him, bringing with them the lame, the maimed, the blind, the dumb, and many others, and they put them down at His feet; and He cured them,

31 S o the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel. Feeding the Four Thousand

So that the crowd was amazed when they saw the dumb speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they recognized and praised and thanked and glorified the God of Israel.

32 N ow Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”

Then Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, I have pity and sympathy and am deeply moved for the crowd, because they have been with Me now three days and they have nothing to eat; and I am not willing to send them away hungry, lest they faint or become exhausted on the way.

33 T hen His disciples said to Him, “Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?”

And the disciples said to Him, Where are we to get bread sufficient to feed so great a crowd in this isolated and desert place?

34 J esus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few little fish.”

And Jesus asked them, How many loaves of bread do you have? They replied, Seven, and a few small fish.

35 S o He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.

And ordering the crowd to recline on the ground,

36 A nd He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude.

He took the seven loaves and the fish, and when He had given thanks, He broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.

37 S o they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left.

And they all ate and were satisfied. And they gathered up seven '> large provision] baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over.

38 N ow those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.

Those who ate were 4, 000 men, not including the women and the children.

39 A nd He sent away the multitude, got into the boat, and came to the region of Magdala.

Then He dismissed the crowds, got into the boat, and went to the district of Magadan.
