1 A nd it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel had come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the Lord.

And 480 years after the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the second month, Ziv, he began to build the Lord’s house.

2 N ow the house which King Solomon built for the Lord, its length was sixty cubits, its width twenty, and its height thirty cubits.

The length of the house Solomon built for the Lord was sixty cubits, its breadth twenty, and its height thirty cubits.

3 T he vestibule in front of the sanctuary of the house was twenty cubits long across the width of the house, and the width of the vestibule extended ten cubits from the front of the house.

The length of the vestibule in front of the temple was twenty cubits, equal to the width of the house, and its depth in front of the house was ten cubits.

4 A nd he made for the house windows with beveled frames.

For the house he made narrow windows.

5 A gainst the wall of the temple he built chambers all around, against the walls of the temple, all around the sanctuary and the inner sanctuary. Thus he made side chambers all around it.

Against the wall of the house he built chambers running round the walls of the house both of the Holy Place and of the Holy of Holies; and he made side chambers all around.

6 T he lowest chamber was five cubits wide, the middle was six cubits wide, and the third was seven cubits wide; for he made narrow ledges around the outside of the temple, so that the support beams would not be fastened into the walls of the temple.

The first story’s side chambers were five cubits wide, those of the middle story six cubits wide, and of the third story seven cubits wide; for around the outside of the wall of the house he made offsets in order that the supporting beams should not be thrust into the walls of the house.

7 A nd the temple, when it was being built, was built with stone finished at the quarry, so that no hammer or chisel or any iron tool was heard in the temple while it was being built.

When the house was being built, its stone was made ready at the quarry, and no hammer, ax, or tool of iron was heard in the house while it was in building.

8 T he doorway for the middle story was on the right side of the temple. They went up by stairs to the middle story, and from the middle to the third.

The entrance to the lowest side chamber was on the right side of the house; and one went up winding stairs into the middle chamber and from the middle into the third.

9 S o he built the temple and finished it, and he paneled the temple with beams and boards of cedar.

So Solomon built the temple building and finished it, and roofed the house with beams and boards of cedar.

10 A nd he built side chambers against the entire temple, each five cubits high; they were attached to the temple with cedar beams.

Then he built the stories of chambers against all the house, each five cubits high; and it was joined to the house with timbers of cedar.

11 T hen the word of the Lord came to Solomon, saying:

Now the word of the Lord came to Solomon, saying,

12 Concerning this temple which you are building, if you walk in My statutes, execute My judgments, keep all My commandments, and walk in them, then I will perform My word with you, which I spoke to your father David.

Concerning this house which you are building, if you will walk in My statutes, execute My precepts, and keep all My commandments to walk in them, then I will fulfill to you My promises which I made to David your father.

13 A nd I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake My people Israel.”

And I will dwell among the Israelites and will not forsake My people Israel.

14 S o Solomon built the temple and finished it.

So Solomon built the house and finished it.

15 A nd he built the inside walls of the temple with cedar boards; from the floor of the temple to the ceiling he paneled the inside with wood; and he covered the floor of the temple with planks of cypress.

He built the walls of the house (the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies) within with boards of cedar, from the floor of the house to the rafters of the ceiling. He covered the inside with wood, and the floor of the house with boards of cypress.

16 T hen he built the twenty-cubit room at the rear of the temple, from floor to ceiling, with cedar boards; he built it inside as the inner sanctuary, as the Most Holy Place.

He built twenty cubits of the rear of the house with boards of cedar from the floor to the rafters; he built it within for the sanctuary, the Holy of Holies.

17 A nd in front of it the temple sanctuary was forty cubits long.

The house, that is, the temple in front of the Holy of Holies, was forty cubits long.

18 T he inside of the temple was cedar, carved with ornamental buds and open flowers. All was cedar; there was no stone to be seen.

The cedar on the house within was carved with gourds and open flowers. All was cedar; no stone was visible.

19 A nd he prepared the inner sanctuary inside the temple, to set the ark of the covenant of the Lord there.

And he prepared the Holy of Holies in the inner room in which to set the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

20 T he inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and twenty cubits high. He overlaid it with pure gold, and overlaid the altar of cedar.

The Holy of Holies was twenty cubits in length, in breadth, and in height. He overlaid it with pure gold. He also overlaid the cedar altar.

21 S o Solomon overlaid the inside of the temple with pure gold. He stretched gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary, and overlaid it with gold.

Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold, and he drew chains of gold across in front of the Holy of Holies and overlaid it with gold.

22 T he whole temple he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the temple; also he overlaid with gold the entire altar that was by the inner sanctuary.

And the whole house he overlaid with gold, until all the house was finished. Also the whole altar that belonged to the Holy of Holies he overlaid with gold.

23 I nside the inner sanctuary he made two cherubim of olive wood, each ten cubits high.

Within the Holy of Holies he made two cherubim of olive wood, each ten cubits high.

24 O ne wing of the cherub was five cubits, and the other wing of the cherub five cubits: ten cubits from the tip of one wing to the tip of the other.

Five cubits was the length of one wing of the cherub and five cubits its other wing; from the tip of one wing to the tip of the other was ten cubits.

25 A nd the other cherub was ten cubits; both cherubim were of the same size and shape.

The wings of the other cherub were also ten cubits. Both cherubim were the same,

26 T he height of one cherub was ten cubits, and so was the other cherub.

The height of one cherub ten cubits, as was the other.

27 T hen he set the cherubim inside the inner room; and they stretched out the wings of the cherubim so that the wing of the one touched one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall. And their wings touched each other in the middle of the room.

He put the cherubim within the inner sanctuary. Their wings were stretched out, so that the wing of one touched one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall, and their inner wings touched in the midst of the room.

28 A lso he overlaid the cherubim with gold.

Solomon overlaid the cherubim with gold.

29 T hen he carved all the walls of the temple all around, both the inner and outer sanctuaries, with carved figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers.

He carved all the walls of the house (these two holy rooms) round about with figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, within and without.

30 A nd the floor of the temple he overlaid with gold, both the inner and outer sanctuaries.

The floor of the house he overlaid with gold, inside and out.

31 F or the entrance of the inner sanctuary he made doors of olive wood; the lintel and doorposts were one-fifth of the wall.

For the Holy of Holies he made doors of olive wood; their entire width was one-fifth that of the wall.

32 T he two doors were of olive wood; and he carved on them figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold; and he spread gold on the cherubim and on the palm trees.

On the two doors of olive wood he carved cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers; he overlaid them with gold, and spread gold on the cherubim and palm trees.

33 S o for the door of the sanctuary he also made doorposts of olive wood, one-fourth of the wall.

Also he made for the door of the Holy Place four-sided posts of olive wood.

34 A nd the two doors were of cypress wood; two panels comprised one folding door, and two panels comprised the other folding door.

The two doors were of cypress wood; the two leaves of each door were folding.

35 T hen he carved cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers on them, and overlaid them with gold applied evenly on the carved work.

He carved on them cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, covered with gold evenly applied on the carved work.

36 A nd he built the inner court with three rows of hewn stone and a row of cedar beams.
