1 N ow Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there.

And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain and chief executioner of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there.

2 T he Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

But the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful and prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

3 A nd his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand.

And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all that he did to flourish and succeed in his hand.

4 S o Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority.

So Joseph pleased and found favor in his sight, and he served him. And made him supervisor over his house and he put all that he had in his charge.

5 S o it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had in the house and in the field.

From the time that he made him supervisor in his house and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the Lord’s blessing was on all that he had in the house and in the field.

6 T hus he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.

And left all that he had in Joseph’s charge and paid no attention to anything he had except the food he ate. Now Joseph was an attractive person and fine-looking.

7 A nd it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.”

Then after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and she said, Lie with me.

8 B ut he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand.

But he refused and said to his master’s wife, See here, with me in the house my master has concern about nothing; he has put all that he has in my care.

9 T here is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

He is not greater in this house than I am; nor has he kept anything from me except you, for you are his wife. How then can I do this great evil and sin against God?

10 S o it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.

She spoke to Joseph day after day, but he did not listen to her, to lie with her or to be with her.

11 B ut it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside,

Then it happened about this time that Joseph went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the men of the house were indoors.

12 t hat she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.

And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me! But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out.

13 A nd so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,

And when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled away,

14 t hat she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.

She called to the men of her household and said to them, Behold, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to mock and insult us; he came in where I was to lie with me, and I screamed at the top of my voice.

15 A nd it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.”

And when he heard me screaming and crying, he left his garment with me and fled and got out of the house.

16 S o she kept his garment with her until his master came home.

And she laid up his garment by her until his master came home.

17 T hen she spoke to him with words like these, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me;

Then she told him the same story, saying, The Hebrew servant whom you brought among us came to me to mock and insult me.

18 s o it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.”

And when I screamed and cried, he left his garment with me and fled out.

19 S o it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, “Your servant did to me after this manner,” that his anger was aroused.

And when master heard the words of his wife, saying to him, This is the way your servant treated me, his wrath was kindled.

20 T hen Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison.

And Joseph’s master took him and put him in the prison, a place where the state prisoners were confined; so he was there in the prison.

21 B ut the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

But the Lord was with Joseph, and showed him mercy and loving-kindness and gave him favor in the sight of the warden of the prison.

22 A nd the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing.

And the warden of the prison committed to Joseph’s care all the prisoners who were in the prison; and whatsoever was done there, he was in charge of it.

23 T he keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph’s authority, because the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.

The prison warden paid no attention to anything that was in charge, for the Lord was with him and made whatever he did to prosper.
