1 N ow it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

Después de estas cosas aconteció que murió Nahas rey de los hijos de Amón, y reinó en su lugar su hijo.

2 A nd David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

Y dijo David: Haré misericordia con Hanán hijo de Nahas, porque también su padre hizo conmigo misericordia. Así David envió embajadores que lo consolaran de la muerte de su padre. Mas venidos los siervos de David en la tierra de los amonitas a Hanán, para consolarle,

3 B ut the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

los príncipes de los hijos de Amón dijeron a Hanán: ¿A tu parecer honra David a tu padre, que te ha enviado consoladores? ¿No vienen antes sus siervos a ti para escudriñar, e inquirir, y reconocer la tierra?

4 W herefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

Entonces Hanán tomó los siervos de David, y los rapó, y les cortó los vestidos por la mitad, hasta las partes vergonzosas, y los despachó.

5 T hen there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

Se fueron, pues, y fue dada la nueva a David de aquellos varones, y él envió a recibirles, porque estaban muy afrentados. Y les dijo el rey: Estaos en Jericó hasta que os crezca la barba, y entonces volveréis.

6 A nd when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria-maachah, and out of Zobah.

Y viendo los hijos de Amón que se habían hecho odiosos a David, Hanán y los hijos de Amón enviaron mil talentos de plata, para tomar a sueldo carros y gente de a caballo de la Siria de los ríos, de la Siria de Maaca, y de Soba.

7 S o they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

Y tomaron a sueldo treinta y dos mil carros, y al rey de Maaca y a su pueblo, los cuales vinieron y asentaron su campamento delante de Medeba. Y se juntaron también los hijos de Amón de sus ciudades, y vinieron a la guerra.

8 A nd when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

Oyéndolo David, envió a Joab y a todo el ejército de los hombres valientes.

9 A nd the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

Y los hijos de Amón salieron, y ordenaron su escuadrón a la entrada de la ciudad; y los reyes que habían venido, estaban por sí en el campo.

10 N ow when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

Y viendo Joab que la faz de la batalla estaba contra él delante y a las espaldas, escogió de todos los más escogidos que había en Israel, y ordenó su escuadrón contra los sirios.

11 A nd the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

Puso luego el resto de la gente en mano de Abisai su hermano, ordenándolos en escuadrón contra los amonitas.

12 A nd he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

Y dijo: Si los sirios fueren más fuertes que yo, tú me salvarás; y si los amonitas fueren más fuertes que tú, yo te salvaré.

13 B e of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the Lord do that which is good in his sight.

Esfuérzate, y esforcémonos por nuestro pueblo, y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios; y haga el SEÑOR lo que bien le pareciere.

14 S o Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

Se acercó luego Joab y el pueblo que tenía consigo, para pelear contra los sirios; mas ellos huyeron delante de él.

15 A nd when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

Entonces los hijos de Amón, viendo que los Sirios habían huido, huyeron también ellos delante de Abisai su hermano, y entraron en la ciudad. Y Joab se volvió a Jerusalén.

16 A nd when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

Y viendo los sirios que habían caído delante de Israel, enviaron embajadores, y trajeron a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del río, cuyo capitán era Sofac, general del ejército de Hadad-ezer.

17 A nd it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

Y cuando el aviso fue dado a David, juntó a todo Israel, y pasando el Jordán vino a ellos, y ordenó contra ellos su ejército. Y cuando David hubo ordenado su tropa contra ellos, pelearon contra él los sirios.

18 B ut the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

Mas el sirio huyó delante de Israel; y mató David de los sirios los de siete mil carros, y cuarenta mil hombres de a pie; asimismo mató a Sofac, general del ejército.

19 A nd when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

Y viendo los sirios de Hadad-ezer que habían caído delante de Israel, concertaron paz con David, y fueron sus siervos; y nunca más quiso el sirio ayudar a los hijos de Amón.
