1 D avid and the captains of the army set apart for the work some of the sons of Asaph, of Heman and of Jeduthun. They were to speak God’s Word while harps and timbrels were playing. These are the names of those who served in this way.

Also David and the chiefs of the host separated to the service some of the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, who should prophesy with lyres, harps, and cymbals. The list of the musicians according to their service was:

2 T he sons of Asaph were: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asharelah. They were led by Asaph, who spoke for God under the leading of the king.

Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah, the sons of Asaph under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied (witnessed and testified under divine inspiration) in keeping with the king’s order.

3 T he six sons of Jeduthun were: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah and Mattithiah. They were led by their father Jeduthun, who spoke God’s Word using the harp, giving thanks and praising the Lord.

Of the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six in all, under the direction of their father Jeduthun, who witnessed and prophesied under divine inspiration with the lyre in thanksgiving and praise to the Lord.

4 T he sons of Heman were: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamtiezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir and Mahazioth.

Of Heman: the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth.

5 A ll these were the sons of Heman the king’s man of God, to honor him by the Words of God. God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.

All these were the sons of Heman the king’s seer in the words and things of God to exalt Him; for God gave to Heman fourteen sons and three daughters,

6 A ll of them were led by their father to sing in the Lord’s house. They sang and played timbrels and harps, serving in the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were led by the king.

All of whom were under the direction of their father for song in the house of the Lord, with cymbals, harps, and lyres, for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the order of the king.

7 T he number of those and their brothers who were taught to sing to the Lord, all who were very good singers, was 288.

So the number of them, with their kinsmen who were specially trained in songs for the Lord, all who were talented singers, was 288.

8 T hey drew names for their work, the young and old alike, also the teacher and the one who was taught.

cast lots for their duties, small and great, teacher and scholar alike.

9 T hese are how the names were drawn. First was Joseph the son of Asaph. The second was Gedaliah. Together with his brothers and sons, there were twelve.

The first lot fell for Asaph to Joseph; the second to Gedaliah, to him, his brethren and his sons, twelve;

10 T he third was Zaccur. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The third to Zaccur, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

11 T he fourth was Izri. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The fourth to Izri, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

12 T he fifth was Nethaniah. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The fifth to Nethaniah, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

13 T he sixth was Bukkiah. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The sixth to Bukkiah, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

14 T he seventh was Jesharelah. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The seventh to Jesharelah, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

15 T he eighth was Jeshaiah. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

16 T he ninth was Mattaniah. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The ninth to Mattaniah, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

17 T he tenth was Shimei. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The tenth to Shimei, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

18 T he eleventh was Azarel. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The eleventh to Azarel, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

19 T he twelfth was Hashabiah. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

20 T he thirteenth was Shubael. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The thirteenth to Shubael, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

21 T he fourteenth was Mattithiah. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The fourteenth to Mattithiah, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

22 T he fifteenth was Jeremoth. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The fifteenth to Jeremoth, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

23 T he sixteenth was Hananiah. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The sixteenth to Hananiah, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

24 T he seventeenth was Joshbekashah. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The seventeenth of Joshbekashah, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

25 T he eighteenth was Hanani. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The eighteenth to Hanani, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

26 T he nineteenth was Mallothi. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The nineteenth to Mallothi, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

27 T he twentieth was Eliathah. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The twentieth to Eliathah, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

28 T he twenty-first was Hothir. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The twenty-first to Hothir, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

29 T he twenty-second was Giddalti. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

The twenty-second to Giddalti, his sons and his brethren, twelve;

30 T he twenty-third was Mahazioth. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.

31 A nd the twenty-fourth was Romamti-ezer. With his sons and brothers there were twelve.
