1 These are the Laws which the Lord your God has told me to teach you. You are to do them in the land you are going to take for your own.

Now this is the instruction, the laws, and the precepts which the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you might do them in the land to which you go to possess it,

2 T hen you and your son and your grandson will fear the Lord your God. You will obey all His Laws that I tell you, all the days of your life. And then you will have a longer life.

That you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, and keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.

3 O Israel, you should listen and be careful to do them. Then it will go well with you. And you will become many in a land flowing with milk and honey. This is what the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you.

Hear therefore, O Israel, and be watchful to do them, that it may be well with you and that you may increase exceedingly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

4 Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord!

Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord.

5 A nd you must love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with your entire being and with all your might.

6 K eep these words in your heart that I am telling you today.

And these words which I am commanding you this day shall be in your minds and hearts;

7 D o your best to teach them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you get up.

You shall whet and sharpen them so as to make them penetrate, and teach and impress them diligently upon the hearts of your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up.

8 T ie them as something special to see on your hand and on your forehead.

And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets (forehead bands) between your eyes.

9 W rite them beside the door of your house and on your gates.

And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

10 The Lord your God will bring you into the land He promised to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give to you. There will be big and beautiful cities which you did not build.

And when the Lord your God brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you, with great and goodly cities which you did not build,

11 H ouses will be full of good things which you did not fill. There will be pools for keeping water which you did not dig, and grape vines and olive trees which you did not plant. You will eat and be filled.

And houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and cisterns hewn out which you did not hew, and vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and when you eat and are full,

12 B ut then be careful not to forget the Lord Who brought you from the land of Egypt, out of the land where you were held as servants.

Then beware lest you forget the Lord, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

13 Y ou must fear the Lord your God. You must worship Him, and swear by His name.

You shall fear the Lord your God and serve Him and swear by His name.

14 D o not follow other gods, any of the gods of the people around you.

You shall not go after other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who are round about you;

15 O r the anger of the Lord your God will burn against you. He will destroy you from the earth. For the Lord your God Who is among you is a jealous God.

For the Lord your God in the midst of you is a jealous God; lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and He destroy you from the face of the earth.

16 Do not test the Lord your God, as you put Him to the test at Massah.

You shall not tempt and try the Lord your God as you tempted and tried Him in Massah.

17 B e careful to keep all the Laws which the Lord your God has told you.

You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God and His exhortations and His statutes which He commanded you.

18 D o what is right and good in the eyes of the Lord. Then it will be well with you. And you may go in and take the good land for your own which the Lord promised to give to your fathers.

And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may go well with you and that you may go in and possess the good land which the Lord swore to give to your fathers,

19 Y ou will drive out of your way all who hate you, as the Lord has promised.

To cast out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has promised.

20 In time to come your son will ask you, ‘What do all the Laws mean which the Lord told you?’

When your son asks you in time to come, What is the meaning of the testimonies and statutes and precepts which the Lord our God has commanded you?

21 T hen say to your son, ‘We were servants of Pharaoh in Egypt. But the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand.

Then you shall say to your son, We were Pharaoh’s bondmen in Egypt, and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

22 T he Lord showed us great and powerful works against Egypt, Pharaoh, and all those of his house.

And the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and evil, against Egypt, against Pharaoh, and all his household, before our eyes;

23 T he Lord brought us out from there to bring us into the land He had promised to our fathers.’

And He brought us out from there, that He might bring us in to give us the land which He swore to give our fathers.

24 S o the Lord told us to do all these Laws and to fear the Lord our God for our good always, as it is today.

And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is this day.

25 W e will be right with the Lord our God if we are careful to obey all of the Law before Him, just as He told us.

And it will be accounted as righteousness (conformity to God’s will in word, thought, and action) for us if we are watchful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as He has commanded us.
